Pros and cons of Ireland joining with Great Britain

Answers

When I was young, it was the conventional wisdom that Ireland would achieve inevitable greatness if only the Republic and Northern Ireland were reunited. The mechanism by which this greatness would be attained was never explained. The proposition was so self-evidently true that to voice any doubt was to expose oneself as a knave or a fool.

Well, we've come a long way since then. Nowadays, there are very few people in the Republic of Ireland who seriously advocate for a united Ireland. The disadvantages of uniting are obvious, the advantages elusive.

The two parts of Ireland could be united only if a majority in both parts wished it. There appears to be no possibility of that happening for the foreseeable future. A solid majority in Northern Ireland -- many Catholics as well as almost all Protestants -- favor remaining in the UK. And I believe that if the citizens of the Republic were faced with a referendum tomorrow requiring an up/down vote on actual, immediate unification, a majority would vote "no."

But let's assume for the sake of discussion that a majority of voters in both parts of Ireland were to vote for unification; what then? One must assume that there would still be a very large "no" vote by Unionists in Northern Ireland. Perhaps most of these voters would reconcile themselves, however reluctantly, to living in a united Ireland. But a substantial percentage of Unionists/loyalists would never accept being ruled from Dublin. And some portion of those would resort to violent resistance to the new order.

Thus, the first and most serious disadvantage to unification would be the eruption of a new round of Troubles, with loyalist paramilitaries making war on Catholic/nationalists and the Dublin government. These new Troubles could drag on for decades, even generations. They would not be confined to the territory of the former NI but would involve bombings and other terrorism directed at targets of opportunity throughout Ireland. Just as the UK government could never defeat the IRA, the Irish government would not be able to defeat the the new UVF or UDA. Moreover, with the separation of NI from the UK and its incorporation into a united Ireland being a fait accomplit, it is hard to see how any political resolution would be possible.

The second disadvantage of unification is that it would devastate the economies of both parts of Ireland. Thirty years of the Troubles left the Northern Ireland economy in a shambles. The province is totally dependent on massive amounts of aid from the UK. In a united Ireland, the Dublin government would have to pick up the tab, which would bankrupt the country in no time at all. Moreover, with NI currently at peace and a political settlement in place, there is at least some hope that NI will be economically self sufficient some day. That hope would vanish in a united Ireland plagued by perpetual loyalist violence.

So, the major disadvantages are obvious: (1) intractable political violence, and (2) economic collapse.

These are the pros and cons of Ireland joining Great Britain.

Pros.

Ireland became part of a stronger monarchy.Great Britain was supposed to support Ireland in the economy and politics. Ireland could get the benefits to be part of the kingdoms of the British monarchy.

Cons.

Irish people lost part of their culture and risk many traditions. The Irish language was replaced by the English language.Irish law suffered modifications and adopted British rule. The Irish Parliament was abolished.Landlords lost their properties and had to work for English landlords. When the Potato Famine appeared, the British government did not do much to alleviate the hunger in Ireland.

We conclude that there were many more cons than pros when Ireland joined Great Britain. Ireland joined Britain by signing the Acts of Union of 1800.

• Size of the storm: How tall was the wall of dust that traveled
across the plains?

Answers

Answer:

The Dust Bowl was the name given to the drought-stricken Southern Plains region of the United States, which suffered severe dust storms during a dry period in the 1930s. As high winds and choking dust swept the region from Texas to Nebraska, people and livestock were killed and crops failed across the entire region. The Dust Bowl intensified the crushing economic impacts of the Great Depression and drove many farming families on a desperate migration in search of work and better living conditions.

While “black blizzards” constantly menaced Plains states in the 1930s, a massive dust storm 2 miles high traveled 2,000 miles before hitting the East Coast on May 11, 1934.

Candidate Debate and reflexion about politics. Write a paragraph how you can teach others about politics with out going into a heated argument. Minimum 10 sentences.

Answers

Answer:

To avoid heated arguments about politics it is very important to show respect to the other person. If you are talking about politics and the other person senses that you don't care about them or you are mocking them, the conversation can very quickly turn sour. Also when discussing politics with another, never attack them personally. Even though you might begin to feel a rush of annoyance or anger, never insult him/her. This not only shows weakness on your part, but also insulting the other person makes the less likely to listen to your logical arguments. So if you attack a person emotionally in a discussion ,they will most likely attack you emotionally and personally, thus spiraling into a heated argument. This also shows immaturity and a lack of cool headedness  on your part if you cannot discuss a matter with out brining personal issues into the debate. Another way to teach people about politics and lead them towards truth is to try and agree with them as much as possible. Making him/her feel welcome and listened to will "warm them up" to your side of the debate and make them more willing to listen and even maybe change their view on the current issue. But most importantly, show them you care and you are discussing the issue because you care about the other person. It is not wise to go into a political debate with a complete stranger on the internet because the in most cases the only thing that will happen is either persons getting frustrated, angry, and even more at odds with your view than before.
