An earlier edition of this Primer, covering different foodborne illnesses, was published in MMWR in 2001 (MMWR 2001;50[No. RR-2]) and also as a separate publication by the American Medical Association, CDC, the Food and Drug Administration, and the U.S. Department of Agriculture. This report updates and supplements the previous edition. It is being reprinted here as a courtesy to the collaborating agencies and the MMWR readers.

Preface

Foodborne illness is a serious public health problem. CDC estimates that each year 76 million people get sick, more than 300,000 are hospitalized, and 5,000 die as a result of foodborne illnesses. Primarily the very young, the elderly, and the immunocompromised are affected. Recent changes in human demographics and food preferences, changes in food production and distribution systems, microbial adaptation, and lack of support for public health resources and infrastructure have led to the emergence of novel as well as traditional foodborne diseases. With increasing travel and trade opportunities, it is not surprising that now there is a greater risk of contracting and spreading a foodborne illness locally, regionally, and even globally. It was developed collaboratively by the American Medical Association, the American Nurses Association-American Nurse Foundation, CDC, the Food and Drug Administration's Center for Food Safety and Nutrition, and the United States Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service.

Many patients' cases are thought to be the result of a foodborne illness outbreak, and many experts from different fields, such as the microbiologist, epidemiologist, and neurologist, work together by testing the sample, the origin of the bacteria, the site of organ infection, etc.

What is the reason behind the concern over foodborne disease?

Food-borne disease is a type of disease that can spread to different populations if the food is not handled properly with proper sanitation and care and there can be the growth of bacteria, mold, and yeast, which then produce some of the lethal toxins that can be harmful to humans and sometimes damage organs. The microbiologist should test the sample, rate of growth, and favorable conditions for growth, while the neurobiologist observes bacterial infection in nervous system, the doctor educate regarding the issue, and the epidemiologist reports on the rate of widespread of bacteria in a large population.

Hence, many patients' cases are thought to be the result of a foodborne illness outbreak, and many experts from different fields, such as the microbiologist, epidemiologist, and neurologist, work together by testing the sample, the origin of the bacteria, the site of organ infection, etc.

Independence Movements in AfricaBetween 1957 and 1993 nearly 50 African states achieved independence from colonial rule. The first sparks of resistance to foreign control took shape much earlier, though, in some cases hundreds of years earlier. Independence movements developed throughout Africa in the mid-1900s. Although they followed different paths, they shared a common beginning: resistance to domination by foreign powers. Unfortunately, once in control, many of these independence movements imposed their own form of domination. As a result, modern Africa continues to wrestle with many of the same political problems that motivated the independence movements of the past.Describe the common trigger for the indepedence movements in Africa. After three days he received his sacred dreamin which he found, after long searching, the white mans iron. He did not understand his vision of finding something belonging to the white people, for in that time they were the enemy. When he came down from the butte to cleanse himself at the stream below, he found the remains of a campfire and the broken shell of an iron kettle. This was a sign that reinforced his dream. He took a piece of the iron for his medicine bag, which he had made of elk skin years before, to prepare for his quest. He returned to his village, where he told his dream to the wise old men of the tribe. They gave him the name Iron Shell, but neither did they understand the meaning of the dream. The first Iron Shell kept the piece of iron with him at all times and believed it gave him protection from the evils of those unhappy days. Then a terrible thing happened to Iron Shell. He and several other young men were taken from their homes by the soldiers and sent far away to a white mans boarding school. He was angry and lonesome for his parents and the young girl he had wed before he was taken away. At first Iron Shell resisted the teachers attempts to change him, and he did not try to learn. One day it was his turn to work in the schools blacksmith shop. As he walked into the place, he knew that his medicine had brought him there to learn and work with the white mans iron.
