En las membranas los receptores hidrofilicos se encuentran hacia el exterior de la celula y los hidrofobicos hacia el interior.

Es por eso que si una señal quimica hidrofobica busca influir sobre un receptor hidrofobico debera atravesar la membrana o mismo encontrar la estructura hidrofobica en el espesor de la membrana.Las moleculas hidrofobicas tienen la capacidad de ingresar al citosol, es decir al medio interno celular o al LIC(liquido intracelular) y algunas hasta la estructura nuclear, mientras que las hidrofilicas no, ya que son repulsadas por los fosfolipidos de membrana celular que son de caracter hidrofobico y se rechazan con las moleculas hidrofilicas afines al agua, es asi que estas moleculas se uniran en la parte externa de la celula donde es que se encuentran sus receptores.

Que una molecula sea hidrofobica quiere decir que es de origen lipidico y que no se atrae con el agua, o se ve repelida ante la presencia de ella, esto es a causa de la polaridad de las moleculas que lo conforman al compuesto, un ejemplo de la hidrofobia son las micelas que se conforman en nuestro intestino al consumir grasas o mismo la membrana celular que esta altamente formada por fosfolipidos es por eso que no permite la entrada de compuestos quimicos hidrofilicos y su caracter es hidrofobico.

Los compuestos quimicos hidrofilicos se atraen con el agua, y hasta son capaces de arrastrar masas de agua generando asi posibles  gradientes, si un compuesto quimico hidrofilico quiere tener relacion con un receptor hidrofilico, esta union se dara en el compartimiento extracelular o en la cara externa de la membrana y no en el interior ya que se vera incapaz la molecula hidrofilica de atravesar la membrana hidrofoba.
