Learning Real World Problems in School

In school we are only taught reading, math, history, science, and music. But we do not learn about things that are needed to be a successful citizen, such as learning to do taxes and being able to rent a home to live in. Instead, we are stuck learning about things that won’t be very useful in the long run. I’m not sure how creating a song for music class is gonna help me buy a house. It just doesn’t seem very logical, honestly. I mean, school is made for the teaching of future adults. If we don’t teach them the basic human needs of society, then how will people ever mature? They don’t teach us things such as finances and student loans, which are common issues in today's society. However, people may say that if you are focused on a certain job, such as a historian or a mathematician, then I can see how these subjects that school is teaching right now could be helpful to you. But what if you want to have just any job that will pay good money? School doesn’t teach you how to get a job, so you will just be stuck trying to figure it out on your own. When you are left to figure things out on your own, you may get things wrong and be confused. Some may say that our parents are meant to teach us these topics, but some people do not have an able parent to assist them. A common argument is that we would learn these things later in life, yet when you are young and learn things at a young age they would stay in our mind for a long time. Our school motto is “Work Hard. Go to College. Change the World. ” To be able to change the world we need to be good citizens first.

For question 13- Onomatopoeia

Explanation:

simile- contains like or as

onomatopoeia- contains words that explain sounds?

Answer:

12) Simile      13) onomatopoeia

Explanation:

12) A simile is an exagerration or phrase that uses the words like/as example: You are cute as a button. This is to compare it to something. A metaphor is similar, however, it does not use like/as and just states something example: I am dying after doing that.

DO NOT GET THE 2 CONFUSED

13) onomatopoeia is the formation of a word from a sound associated with what is named. Because street lights dont just make a click when they turn off, it would be idiom. I highly doubt it, but if you get this wrong and it lets you retry, it would be personification. Again, I highly doubt onomatopoeia is incorrect.

But I, with mournful tread,
Walk the deck my Captain lies,
Fallen cold and dead.

B. pathos: the use of emotional appeals to affect the audience’s feelings
C. brevity: writing or speaking that is short, brief, and to the point
D. ethos: the use of authority to persuade the audience to act the right way

Answers

Logos refers to the use of logic, reason, or evidence to persuade the audience. Ethos refers to the credibility or authority of the speaker or writer.

Mythology, in the time of ancient Greece, was used not only to explain various phenomena that we now understand via scientific truths, but to account for the origins of humankind. It answered questions like, “What happens after death?” and, “Why does humanity exist at all?” Myths were also often entertaining, and sometimes humorous and intriguing; remember that there weren’t TV episodes or movies in ancient Greece, so people had to entertain themselves in other ways. But more than that, myths told people how to live, and how to tell right from wrong. These stories included morals intended to teach valuable life lessons and instill ethics in their readers.

Read this excerpt from "Why Are They Called Black Holes?"

Astronomers can observe these effects. For example, when a black hole passes through a cloud of dust, it pulls the dust inside it like a big gravity-powered vacuum cleaner. When a star passes too close to a black hole, the black hole pulls it in and breaks up the star, spewing giant flashes of high energy called gamma-ray bursts. And when scientists see light bending even though there is no visible matter nearby, they have evidence that there is an invisible black hole.

In this excerpt, the author's use of description

proves why black holes are so complicated.
details the high energy that stars have inside them.
explains how scientists know when a black hole is nearby.
describes what a black hole looks like without the use of special equipment.

What are the keys to an effective interview? (List at least three examples)

Answers

Answer:

1. Make sure you know what you're going to ask the person you're going to interview. Write down a list of questions you would like ask them and narrow the list down to maybe ten questions or more depending on how long you plan to interview them.

2. Practice what you're going to say. Get some flash cards and write your questions down on them and look through them and imprint them into your memory. That way when you do the interview you won't be stumbling on your words looking for what to say.

3. Don't be too pushy with your questions. There may be a point during the interview where you will ask about the interviewee about an aspect of their personal life. They may answer that question but there is also a chance they may not because it may be something that they aren't very comfortable sharing with you. If they aren't willing to answer the question, respect their refusal and move on to a less personal one.

Ask questions about your position. Also ask what the person interviewing you likes about the job. Ask what challenges you may face.
