From the memoir of author Abigail Prynne
1
I sit at my desk listening to thunder growl outside my window. Flashes of light burst through the darkness, and wind races past my window. The thrilling combination of sight and sound conjures up visions of dragons roaring proudly, breathing fire, and soaring across the midnight sky. Dragons first fascinated me when I was a little girl. They have followed me ever since. The magnificent creatures appeared in storybooks I read in the library, paintings I saw in museums, movies I watched in the theater, and the dreams I had in my sleep. By the time I was thirteen, one question consumed me. I wanted to know if dragons ever existed, so I set out on a quest for facts.
2
As I started my research, I discovered many skeptics. Scientists presented evidence to show why dragons could not—and did not—exist. They explained that it would be impossible for dragons to fly because they would be too big. They laughed at the idea of dragons breathing fire. They pointed out that no other animal has ever done this. They said that if dragons had lived, someone would have found remains somewhere in the world. No bones about it, there were plenty of logical explanations. It would have been easy for me to accept that the only place dragons ever existed was in the imaginations of those who believed.
3
I could have given up, but I thought about my grandmother. She always told me that "people who believe that science is the answer to everything are missing out on everything else." With her words in mind, I searched some more. There were many facts that hinted that dragons may not be fictional. I noticed that cultures across the world all described dragons in similar ways. This was odd because they had no way to communicate with each other. I found dragons mentioned in more than just stories. They appeared in old legal papers, in the travel logs of Marco Polo, and in the Bible. I saw that the Chinese calendar uses a different animal each year. Dragons are included along with eleven real animals. I began to believe it was a real possibility that all of these people were talking about a creature that actually existed.
4
With renewed hope that there was some truth to the legends, I looked for new research. I found that some experts disagreed with popular arguments against dragons. They suggested that a dragon could have four stomachs like a cow. If it created stomach gases like birds, it might create enough to lift itself off the ground. This would give it the ability to fly. If it forced out air when diving toward the earth, it might release gases which could ignite into flame. When the animal died, the stomachs would release strong acids that would dissolve its dead body over time. Biologists backed up these ideas with sketches and models based on known animals. Not everyone agreed with these ideas, but many of the things we accept about dinosaurs and other extinct species started the same way.
5
I doubt we will ever truly know whether dragons existed. There may always be two sides to the fiery debate. Some will say the stories come from active imaginations. Some will believe with all their hearts that the legendary creatures roamed our ancient world. I don't know for certain which side to believe, but the sound and fury of a night like this makes me smile. It rekindles my childhood dreams and keeps the exciting possibility alive.
In paragraph 5, the author discusses two sides to the dragon debate. Which statement best summarizes the ideas in the paragraph?

The author explicitly states that she believes that dragons once existed.
The author implicitly states that she believes that dragons did not exist.

Which excerpt from “The Latin Deli: An Ars Poetica” is an example of an allusion? the heady mix of smells from the open bins of dried codfish how she smiles understanding Suspiros, Merengues, the stale candy of everyone’s childhood reading the labels of packages aloud, as if they were the names of lost lovers
Answer:
Suspiros, Merengues, the stale candy of everyone’s childhood.
Explanation:
An allusion is the referencing of something without actually explicitly mentioning it. It acts as a means to bring something into the mind without directly mentioning it in detail. It could be used as a means to refer to something that the writer/author wants to bring into mind but not direct referencing.
Judith Cofer Ortiz's "The Latin Deli: An Ars Poetica" is an observation that uses vivid imagery and detailed description. It focuses on the issue of an immigrant displacement and the identity crisis, being uprooted from the 'old lie' into the new world of America. An example of an allusion is found in the mention of "Suspiros, Merengues, the stale candy of everyone's childhood" which is a reference to the childhood of the author or anyone displaced, for that matter. It brings back memories of their childhood.
Thus, the correct answer is the third option.

Questions 1–2: In the following two examples, combine or separate sentences or passages as appropriate. Delete any nonessential passages. Start a new paragraph only when a new topic is introduced. 1. Arson destroys neighborhoods as surely as mass bombings. Only a few people commit the crime, but all residents must suffer the consequences. How could it be otherwise, given the nature of the problem, with its tangle of social and economic issues? Decaying buildings are torched by their owners to collect insurance money. This is a despicable crime and ought to be vigorously investigated and punished. Most arsonists escape punishment. Burnt-out structures are, in turn, a haven for gangs and drug traffickers, who cause even more arson. Once several blocks have been gutted, a kind of collective hopelessness grips those who can’t afford to move. The young may continue to set fires from hatred or from despair of ever escaping their crumbling prison. The old and sick become the prey of robbery or random violence, their final years drawn into a whirlpool of fear. The end comes when the municipal government gives up, curtails most services, and abandons the neighborhood.
2. Proponents and opponents of nuclear plants disagree on a number of issues. In particular, the question of safe disposal of nuclear wastes has created strong feelings and considerable conflict. Nuclear power has helped many communities. It provides the additional electricity desperately needed during stress periods such as extremely cold winters and hot summers. Nuclear power has proved to be an important supplement to fossil fuel sources, especially in areas where fossil fuel is scarce.

3. The increase in capital spending for the second half of the year may turn out to be a mainstay of the economy. There seem to be good grounds for making the assumption. Business plans for capital spending this year are so strong that they may spill over into the coming year. This could come as a welcome event, since many business analysts are now predicting a recession in the latter part of this year or the beginning of next year. Investors have shown their interest in the capital-spending sector by increased investment in business equipment, instruments and electronics, and movie and recreational stocks.

I have a presentation at school and the topic is: What are acceptable risks across cultures? However, I'm not really understand how to deal with this topic. Can someone help me?
Answer:
Of the issues currently bedeviling financial services firms, risk culture is one of the foremost. The buildup in risk exposures preceding the financial crisis forced boards and regulators to question weaknesses in risk governance. Since the crisis, the numerous cases of “bad behavior” in the banking industry, such as the Libor and forex manipulation scandals, have intensified focus on the broader concept of risk culture. The Financial Stability Board, which sets international standards for the financial services industry and provides advice for national regulators, released a paper, “Guidance on Supervisory Interaction with Financial Institutions on Risk Culture,” in 2014 that defined risk culture as “the norms, attitudes and behaviors related to risk awareness, risk taking and risk management.” The FSB considers risk culture effective when it promotes sound risk-taking, addresses emerging risks (beyond risk appetite), and ensures employees conduct business in a “legal and ethical manner.” The FSB paper highlights the importance of subcultures across the organization adhering to consistent high standards and values.Lack of focus on known but unlikely risks – Failure to give sufficient weight to potential extreme events or poor outcomes was one of the characteristics in the run-up to the financial crisis. Stress tests were not sufficiently rigorous, and considerable anecdotal evidence suggests there was pushback when more severe tests were suggested. The pendulum has now swung in the direction of conservative risk assessment.
Trade-offs leading to too much risk – All organizations have to make trade-offs. Goals have to be set, whether it is to increase profits, reduce costs, or increase efficiency. The effect on risk must be fully recognized in order to avoid risk creep. A number of individually sensible decisions may be made, but the overall effect could be an excessive buildup in risk. This is true of all industries. A study of risk and safety culture failures across a range of industries found different physical causes but similar root causes: “mindless cost cutting, incentive schemes that divert attention away from safe operations and failure to see the safety implications of organizational changes.” (Hopkins, A. (2009). Preface, Learning from High Reliability Organizations) A clearly defined risk appetite, against which decisions can be measured and aggregate risk tested, is essential to counter these causes.
