C
“‘You’ve not half a degree of fever. You’re scared and that’s all.’” (paragraph 7)
D

E
“Down near the end of the line he had seen one of his own men misconducting himself, snivelling and crying like a baby,—a fine husky boy of eighteen who had never given any trouble.” (paragraph 4)

Answers

Answer:

“‘Well, now, what would they think of you, back there?’” (paragraph 11)

C

“Claude made a dash for him and clapped him on the shoulder.” (paragraph 4)

E

Explanation:

With C, Claude is asking the soldier what the others would think of them, which could indicate that Claude is trying to appeal to the soldier's pride by getting him to think of what his peers would think of him, so then he would want to present himself in a not so sickly manner as to not worry anyone too much.

With E, Claude rushes to the soldier and claps him on the shoulder, which indicates that he is trying to show he is proud of what they have done. Instead of appealing to the soldier's pride verbally in the beginning, he gives a physical sign that is used to indicate that someone is proud of a person and happy to see them.

How does the author compare the Puritans to other groups of their time? a.) They refused to apologize for mistakes. b.) They were more tolerant and reflective than other Europeans. c.) They were more violent than other European groups.

Answers

Answer:

a.) They refused to apologize for mistakes.

Explanation:

The author compare the Puritans with other groups of their time because they refused to apologize for their mistakes of practicing religion other than Christianity. The Puritans came to the Americas to expand upon Puritan religion which was not allowed in their own country. They did not apologize for their choosing another religion and prefer migration to the New land where they are free to practice their religion.

white dolphin chapter 10 summary

Answers

During the long days of summer, Karana sits on the cliff, scanning the horizon for ships. When the first storm of winter comes, she knows that no ship will come until spring. The winter storms blow onto the rock where Karana sleeps, and she is forced to move her bed to the foot of the rock. The dogs come the first night she sleeps there. She makes a fire to keep them back and kills three of them with her bow.

During the storm, Karana decides to travel across the sea to look for her people. When the storm ends, she goes to the place by the cliff where her people left their canoes (the ones they would have used to escape the Aleuts if they came back). The food in the canoes is still good, and Karana brings some water from the spring. Taking the smallest of the canoes, she leaves the island of the blue dolphins.

By dusk, her home has disappeared from sight. The sea is rough and Karana is afraid, but she uses the stars to find her way. During the night, she realizes her canoe is leaking, and plug the crack with fiber form her skirt. When dawn breaks, Karana sees she has drifted south of her planned course. She adjusts her heading, now using the sun to direct her. Soon she finds another leak, which she plugs in the same way as the last. Seeing that the planks of the canoe are weak, Karana knows that she must turn back. She is reluctant to do so, however, because the island to which she must return is so lonely and desolate. As water again starts to leak into the canoe, she turns and heads back. On her way, a swarm of dolphins begins to follow her boat. "Dolphins are a good omen," and though Karana is tired and despairing, the sight of the dolphins gives her the strength to continue. Another night passes, and Karana's canoe begins to leak, but as dawn breaks, she sees her island on the horizon. She reaches the island around noon and, forgetting the danger of the wild dogs, crawls onto the beach and falls asleep.

Karana awakes and leaves the beach the next morning, and returns to her home. Looking out over the island, she is filled with happiness. Surprised at this feeling, since only a few days earlier she had decided she could not bear to live on Ghalas-at any more, Karana knows that she will stay on the island until a ship takes her away. Because she must wait until that day, Karana decides that she must build a house and a place to store food. She scouts two possible sites for her settlement. One is near the wild dogs' cave; the other is on the headland. A third site looks good as well, but it is near the old village, and Karana does not want to be reminded of the people who once lived there.

Karana finally decides on the headland, where the sea elephants are very noisy. She begins to plan her new home, deciding that the first thing she needs is a fence to protect her food supply. It rains for the next two days, and on the third morning Karana heads toward the beach to gather materials for her new home.

AYUDAAAAA DIRECTIONS: Use parentheses to set off all prepositional phrases. Do not look for predicate adjectives within prepositional phrases. Circle the linking verb. Underline the predicate adjective. Some may have compound subjects, verbs, or predicate adjectives. Some may not have a predicate adjective. 1. Great men are not always wise. 2. A good name is priceless. 3. The day is cold and dark. 4. We should be reasonable. 5. No one is good at this. 6. The sword is quick and powerful. 7. The rich man is wealthy beyond imagination. 8. The sky grew dark as the storm approached. 9. The hamburger tasted greasy. 10. She remained haughty throughout the entire discussion.

Answers

Answer:

Linking verbs are italicized, prepositional phrases are in bracket, while predicate adjectives are underlined.

1. Great men are not (always wise).

2. A good name is priceless.

3. The day is cold and dark.

4. We should be reasonable.

5. No one is good (at this).

6. The sword is quick and powerful.

7. The rich man is wealthy (beyond imagination).

8. The sky grew dark (as the storm approached).

9. The hamburger tasted greasy.

10. She remained haughty (throughout the entire discussion).

Explanation:

A prepositional phrase is used to modify a verb or a noun and usually begins with a preposition, an object and sometimes a word that modifies the object. A predicate adjective modifies the noun in a sentence and the adjective is usually connected to the subject through a linking verb.

In question 2, the subject, "Good men", is qualified with the adjective, priceless. The linking verb, "is", connects the subject to the adjective. The prepositional phrases usually begins with the preposition.
