Family Life

European colonists in North America had varying family patterns, especially during the 1600s. In the New England colonies, the early settlers immigrated in whole family units (now called nuclear families) composed of a father, mother, and children. They formed communities based on these nuclear families, which provided valuable stability for British colonial society. The climate of New England proved to be remarkably healthful, and the land supported numerous crops that made a relatively nutritious diet possible. As a result, family members in these colonies were on average healthier than people back home in England and in other colonies. The number of infant deaths was relatively low, and people lived longer lives.

The situation was quite different in other colonies. For instance, family life in New Netherland was unstable until Peter Stuyvesant (1610–1672) became leader of the colony in 1647 (see Chapter 4). He established policies to promote the immigration of nuclear families, which brought new stability to the colony. In early Virginia and Maryland, deadly diseases and different social conditions produced less stable communities. In the early seventeenth century, far more men than women came to the region, most of them unmarried indentured servants (people bound by signed documents to work as laborers for a specified time) who worked in tobacco fields. The few young women who did arrive during this period often found prospective husbands who paid off their terms of service so they could marry sooner. Plantation owners sometimes brought wives with them, but the overall ratio of men to women remained unbalanced, and there were not enough families to sustain the population until the 1680s (see Chapter 7).

The unhealthy climate also took a heavy toll on families in these colonies. Many people died of diseases such as malaria (a disease transmitted by mosquitoes), typhus (a disease transmitted by lice), and dysentery (a disease characterized by severe diarrhea). Few seventeenth-century families in the Chesapeake region survived intact until the children reached adulthood. For this reason, households and kinship extended beyond the nuclear family to include children from multiple marriages, children from households of relatives, and other relations

How did the Aztec Civilization in the Americas develop ? *

Answers

Answer:

The Aztecs appeared in Mesoamerica–as the south-central region of pre-Columbian Mexico is known–in the early 13th century. ... When the Aztecs saw an eagle perched on a cactus on the marshy land near the southwest border of Lake Texcoco, they took it as a sign to build their settlement there.

Explanation:

Answer:

The Aztecs were the first society that required education for all its children, without regard to gender or social status. Which showed the modern world we are all equal. Other ways they influenced today's world is by their diet, recreation, their arts and trade. How did states in the Americas develop in the post-classical era? In the Americas, as in Afro-Eurasia, state systems expanded in scope and reach: networks of city-states flourished in the Maya region, and, at the end of this period, imperial systems were created by the Mexica ("Aztecs") and Inca.

Explanation:

The Aztecs didn't start out as a powerful people. The Nahuatl speaking peoples began as poor hunter-gatherers in northern Mexico, in a place known to them as Aztlan. The city established by the Aztecs, Tenochtitlan, grew to become the capital of their empire.

English document written in 1215 which helped limit the king’s authority

Answers

Answer:

Explanation:

Magna Carta was given in June 1215 and was the initial record to place into composing the rule that the ruler and his administration was not exempt from the laws that apply to everyone else. It looked to keep the ruler from abusing his force, and put cutoff points of imperial authority by building up law as a force in itself.

Answer:

The Magna Carta

Explanation:

This was written as a way to give some of the power to the people after King John failed to rule well. It is said that when the king was forced to sign the document, he only had 7 knights that were still loyal to him.

Monarchs after him tended to ignore the Magna Carta when they wanted to and to differing degrees. Some followed it, others did what they wanted, and some regularly followed it but would break the rules too.

Another fun fact, during the world wars, the magna carta was actually stored in the US because Britain feared that it would be damaged or if they lost the war it would be destroyed.

What role did propaganda play in World War I? How might the absence of propaganda have changedthe circumstances or the outcome of the war?

Answers

The correct answer to this open question is the following.

The role that propaganda played in World War I was very important because, through propaganda, the warring nations communicated the proper messages to their citizens in order to let them know what was happening in the war front, according to each government version.

For instance, in the case of the United States, the federal government created a specific office where they used propaganda to convey its ideas and version of reality to the American citizens. It was called the Committee on Public Information (CPI), commonly known as the Creel Committee. It was created in 1914 and disappeared in 1917.

The absence of propaganda could have changed the circumstances or the outcome of the war only in the way information was handled. As mentioned above, the federal government tried to control or census the kind of information that was considered to be conveyed to its citizens. In one way, the information was manipulated to inform just what was considered appropriate for the American people.

Excerpt from FederalistRead the passage.excerpt from Federalist No. 78 by Alexander HamiltonIn 1787 and 1788, Alexander Hamilton, John Jay, and James Madison wrote the Federalist Papers to persuade voters to ratify the proposed Constitution of the United States of America. These papers included essays about all three branches of government: executive, legislative, and judicial. In Federalist No. 78, Hamilton focused specifically on the judicial branch.Whoever attentively considers the different departments of power must perceive, that, in a government in which they are separated from each other, the judiciary, from the nature of its functions, will always be the least dangerous to the political rights of the Constitution; because it will be least in a capacity to annoy or injure them. The Executive not only dispenses the honors, but holds the sword of the community. The legislature not only commands the purse, but prescribes the rules by which the duties and rights of every citizen are to be regulated. The judiciary, on the contrary, has no influence over either the sword or the purse; no direction either of the strength or of the wealth of the society; and can take no active resolution whatever. It may truly be said to have neither FORCE nor WILL, but merely judgment; and must ultimately depend upon the aid of the executive arm even for the efficacy of its judgments. This simple view of the matter suggests several important consequences. It proves incontestably, that the judiciary is beyond comparison the weakest of the three departments of power; that it can never attack with success either of the other two; and that all possible care is requisite to enable it to defend itself against their attacks. It equally proves, that though individual oppression may now and then proceed from the courts of justice, the general liberty of the people can never be endangered from that quarter; I mean so long as the judiciary remains truly distinct from both the legislature and the Executive. For I agree, that "there is no liberty, if the power of judging be not separated from the legislative and executive powers.'' And it proves, in the last place, that as liberty can have nothing to fear from the judiciary alone, but would have every thing to fear from its union with either of the other departments; that as all the effects of such a union must ensue from a dependence of the former on the latter, notwithstanding a nominal and apparent separation; that as, from the natural feebleness of the judiciary, it is in continual jeopardy of being overpowered, awed, or influenced by its co-ordinate branches; and that as nothing can contribute so much to its firmness and independence as permanency in office, this quality may therefore be justly regarded as an indispensable ingredient in its constitution, and, in a great measure, as the citadel of the public justice and the public security. The complete independence of the courts of justice is peculiarly essential in a limited Constitution. By a limited Constitution, I understand one which contains certain specified exceptions to the legislative authority; such, for instance, as that it shall pass no bills of attainder, no ex-post-facto laws, and the like. Limitations of this kind can be preserved in practice no other way than through the medium of courts of justice, whose duty it must be to declare all acts contrary to the manifest tenor of the Constitution void. Without this, all the reservations of particular rights or privileges would amount to nothing.Question 4 (3.75 points) How does Hamilton's use of the phrase "beyond comparison" and the word never in this excerpt from Paragraph 2 affect the passage? It proves incontestably, that the judiciary is beyond comparison the weakest of the three departments of power; that it can never attack with success either of the other two; . . . that . . . the general liberty of the people can never be endangered from that quarter; I mean so long as the judiciary remains truly distinct from both the legislative and the Executive.Question 4 options:They help convey the intensity of Hamilton's belief in his position. They help convey the honesty with which Hamilton approaches the subject. They help provide specifics about Hamilton's position. They help provide a diverse sample of opinions on the subject.
