Why did Kanzi become a candidate for learning language?

Answers

Answer 1

Answer:

c. He was present when his mother, Matata, was being taught how to  communicate.

Explanation:

The attempts to 'teach' language and help animals communicate with humans has been ongoing research and practical work of many linguistics and psychologists. Sue Savage-Rumbaugh is one of those psychologists who worked on teaching language and communication between animals and humans, specifically focusing on the bonobos.

Kanzi was an infant bonobo when Sue first began teaching lexigrams to Matata, Kanzi's adopted mother. But despite their attempts, Matata seemed to be incapable of learning or understanding anything. Taken back to another facility to be a breeder, Kanzi was left behind. After a couple of days, Sue noticed that Kanzi had absorbed whatever had been taught to his mother. This led Sue to focus on teaching Kanzi instead.

Thus, the correct answer is that Kanzi was present when his mother, Matata was being taught to communicate.

Oatmeal cookies are also a good source of iron. A one-ounce, homemade oatmeal

Should the driving age be raised from 16 to 18?

Answers

Answer:

Ok

Explanation:

There are some strong, data-based arguments to be made in favor of raising the minimum driving age. The rate of fatal crashes per mile driven is around half as high for teens aged 18 or 19 as for 16- and 17-year-olds. It is thought that raising the driving age to 18 could help lower the overall rate of fatal crashes.

The assignment for this lesson is to compose a one-paragraph persuasive message board post about Grendel. Your post will respond to another argument that you disagree with. You'll use evidence from Grendel to craft a fair and well-supported rebuttal. Then you'll complete two other short responses to your classmates' posts.

You should have created a draft of this assignment in the writing activity called "Prepare a Message Board Post." If you didn't complete that activity, you should go back and do so now. If you have already completed the draft, continue to the next page to start revising.

This writing assignment focuses on the following skills:
Establishing a debatable and straightforward claim
Gathering relevant evidence to support a claim
Fairly and effectively refuting a counterclaim
Using technology to participate in online debate

Answers

Scenario 1:

Writing from Grendel's perspective makes him seem more monstrous. Even though we get to see the story from his perspective, he has a very narrow range of emotions. He is unable to relate to the actual humans in the book, showing that he is fundamentally different from them. Beowulf and the other warriors are typical humans, and Grendel is a one-dimensional monster. The lack of common ground between these two kinds of characters makes the division between them very obvious. Therefore, it's difficult to find sympathy for Grendel as you would for another human.

Scenario 2:

In writing from Grendel's perspective, Gardner tries to make Grendel seem more monstrous by showing us his dark, inhuman nature. You see that Grendel is thoughtful — he knows what he is doing will cause pain, but he does it anyway. This is the true definition of a monster, knowing you'll hurt someone and doing it anyway. Gardner shows us that Grendel takes great pleasure in the misery and destruction he causes.

Scenario 3:

Writing from Grendel's perspective makes him seem more sympathetic, because it allows us to get a sense of his self-image. Grendel sees himself as a monster because he's subjected to insults by humans. This makes you feel bad for him, because he seems like a human who has trouble fitting in, maybe even someone with self-image or self-worth problems. We feel sympathy for him because much of his monstrous behavior is actually caused by humans' treatment of him, such as calling him a fungus. Seeing this scene from Grendel's perspective instead of from the men's perspective makes us sympathize with Grendel. He's believed to be disgusting and dangerous just because of how he looks.

Scenario 4:

Writing from Grendel's perspective makes him seem more sympathetic, because you're able to see that he has feelings and thoughts. Therefore, the suffering he endures at the hands of Beowulf makes you feel bad that he's so alone. For example, he bellows for his mother when he is scared, he physically suffers in his fight with Beowulf, and he dies with no one to comfort him. If we were seeing this from the men's perspective, we'd also be afraid of Grendel and see him as monstrous, but seeing the scenes from his perspective makes us realize that he's not angry or monstrous at these points; he's just scared.

Summarize "To build a fire" by by jack london and how it's related to survival ?

Answers

Answer:

here is your answer! :)

Explanation:

A man travels in the Yukon (near the border of current day Alaska) on an extremely cold morning with a husky wolf-dog. The cold does not faze the man, a newcomer to the Yukon, who plans to meet his friends by six o'clock at an old claim. As it grows colder, he realizes his unprotected cheekbones will freeze, but he does not pay it much attention. He walks along a creek trail, mindful of the dangerous, concealed springs; even getting wet feet on such a cold day is extremely dangerous. He stops for lunch and builds a fire.

The man continues on and, in a seemingly safe spot, falls through the snow and wets himself up to his shins. He curses his luck; starting a fire and drying his foot-gear will delay him at least an hour. His feet and fingers are numb, but he starts the fire. He remembers the old-timer from Sulphur Creek who had warned him that no man should travel in the Klondike alone when the temperature was fifty degrees below zero.

The man unties his icy moccasins, but before he can cut the frozen strings on them, clumps of snow from the spruce tree above fall down and snuff out the fire. Though building a fire in the open would have been wiser, it had been easier for the man to take twigs from the spruce tree and drop them directly below on to the fire. Each time he pulled a twig, he had slightly agitated the tree until, at this point, a bough high up had capsized its load of snow. It capsized lower boughs in turn until a small avalanche had blotted out the fire.

The man is scared, and sets himself to building a new fire, aware that he is already going to lose a few toes from frostbite. He gathers twigs and grasses. His fingers numb and nearly lifeless, he unsuccessfully attempts to light a match. He grabs all his matches--seventy--and lights them simultaneously, then sets fire to a piece of bark. He starts the fire, but in trying to protect it from pieces of moss, it soon goes out.

The man decides to kill the dog and puts his hands inside its warm body to restore his circulation. He calls out to the dog, but something fearful and strange in his voice frightens the dog. The dog finally comes forward and the man grabs it in his arms. But he cannot kill the dog, since he is unable to pull out his knife or even throttle the animal. He lets it go.

The man realizes that frostbite is now a less worrisome prospect than death. He panics and runs along the creek trail, trying to restore circulation, the dog at his heels. But his endurance gives out, and finally he falls and cannot rise. He fights against the thought of his body freezing, but it is too powerful a vision, and he runs again. He falls again, and makes one last panicked run and falls once more. He decides he should meet death in a more dignified manner. He imagines his friends finding his body tomorrow.

The man falls off into a comfortable sleep. The dog does not understand why the man is sitting in the snow like that without making a fire. As the night comes, it comes closer and detects death in the man's scent. It runs away in the direction of the camp, "where were the other food-providers and fire-To Build a Fire revolves around the theme of man against nature.

The Chairman,

Osisioma Ngwa Local Government Area,

Aba.

       Sir,

PETITION AGAINST THE PLANNED CLOSURE OF OSISIOMA ORPHANAGE HOME

It has come to my knowledge that Osisioma Ngwa Local Government Area intends to close down the Osisioman  Orphanage Home due to scarcity of funds to continue the smooth running of the orphanage home.

Sir, I wish to remind you that the well-being of the people is the primary responsibility of government. Osisioma Ngwa Local Government Area has the highest number of homeless children and orphans in Abia State. Closure of this orphanage implies that these children will be sent out to the street without anyone to carter for them.

The danger of having such massive number of children out on the streets is that they may be turned into criminals by unscrupulous elements in society who seek to exploit the vulnerability of this group of people to achieve their selfish ends.

We are already overwhelmed by the current security challenges in this part of the state, we definitely do not want to create more problems for ourselves by churning out potential hoodlums from this orphanage home.

I beg you sir to rescind your earlier decision and allow the orphanage home to continue in the interest of common good.

Thanks in anticipation of your positive response.

Dear Mrs. Sullivan:

I recently heard that the library plans to remove To Kill a Mockingbird and The Great Gatsby from its shelves. This made me very sad because those are two of my favorite novels.

In a free society, people need to have access to information without someone in charge of deciding what is okay to read. Otherwise, isn’t the freedom of the press in the First Amendment worthless?

Every year, the American Library Association celebrates Banned Books Week. This event calls attention to books that were banned or challenged at some point during history. The ALA wants to show that it is important for people to have access to unpopular viewpoints. This organization feels it is harmful to all of society to censor information.

Many of the books that were challenged were never banned because teachers, librarians, and booksellers across the country defended them. Won’t you join in the fight to make sure these American classics are available for people to read for years to come? Make the writers of the Constitution proud.

Sincerely,

Lizz

What transpires throughout Banned Book Week?

These are some things you can do to prevent censorship, keep books available in libraries, and support the right to read freely.

How does banning books circumvent the First Amendment?

According to David L. Hudson Jr., a professor at Belmont University College of Law and an authority on First Amendment law, "book prohibitions violate the First Amendment because they deny children or students the ability to receive information and ideas."

The fact that women often feel pressured to conform to society’s expectations is a common feminist theme found within literature. As this theme appears within part two of Trifles, which pair of symbols most strengthens this theme?

A) towel, table
B) bottle of fruit, birdcage
C) breadbox, cats
D) quilt, bird

Answers

The pair of symbols in "Trifles" that most strengthens the theme of pressure to conform is quilt and bird, as stated in option D and further explained below.

What is a symbol?

In literature, we can define a symbol as an image that is used to represent an idea. In the play "Trifles," several symbols are used to represent the pressure women feel to conform to society's expectations.

In part two of the play, the pair of symbols that most strengthens that theme is quilt and bird. The bird is killed by the woman's husband, which represents how her own voice was silenced by him. The quilt, on the other hand, shows how that life of conformity was affecting the woman, as her way of tying it was becoming messier.

With the information above in mind, we can choose option D as the correct answer for this question.

Read the excerpt from Animal Farm.

As Clover looked down the hillside her eyes filled with tears. If she could have spoken her thoughts, it would have been to say that this was not what they had aimed at when they had set themselves years ago to work for the overthrow of the human race. These scenes of terror and slaughter were not what they had looked forward to on that night when old Major first stirred them to rebellion. If she herself had had any picture of the future, it had been of a society of animals set free from hunger and the whip, all equal, each working according to his capacity, the strong protecting the weak, as she had protected the lost brood of ducklings with her foreleg on the night of Major's speech. Instead—she did not know why—they had come to a time when no one dared speak his mind, when fierce, growling dogs roamed everywhere, and when you had to watch your comrades torn to pieces after confessing to shocking crimes. There was no thought of rebellion or disobedience in her mind.

What is the main conflict described in this excerpt?

A.Clover feels unhappy and is unsure about whether or not to rebel against Animal Farm.
B.Clover experiences distress because her beliefs go against what Old Major taught her.
C.Clover feels frustrated at what has happened at the farm and at her inability to stop it.
D.Clover experiences remorse and regrets not living her dreams before she dies.

Answers

Answer:

B. Clover experiences distress because her beliefs go against what Old Major taught her.

Explanation:

Clover experiences distress because Old Major had told all the animals of animal farm that when the rebellion was a success the animals would be free. They would no longer have small rations of food, nor would they have to get the whip. All the animals were happy about this, when they did carry out the rebellion and Napolean kicked out snowball and became corrupt with power, he took matters into his own hooves. To remain in power he uses the dogs as protection and the animals as his slaves basically, to keep them in his power he convinces them with the help of the convincing squeler. Clover can't do anything but sit aside and cry because if she were to have any thought of disobedience, she would be ripped to shreds.
