The Wild Swans at Coole
by William Butler Yeats

The trees are in their autumn beauty,

The woodland paths are dry,

Under the October twilight the water

Mirrors a still sky;

Upon the brimming water among the stones

Are nine and fifty swans.

The nineteenth Autumn has come upon me

Since I first made my count; I saw, before I had well finished,

All suddenly mount

And scatter wheeling in great broken rings

Upon their clamorous wings

I have looked upon those brilliant creatures,

And now my heart is sore

All's changed since I, hearing at twilight,

The first time on this shore,

The bell-beat of their wings above my head,

Trod with a lighter tread. Unwearied still, lover by lover,

They paddle in the cold,

Companionable streams or climb the air;

Their hearts have not grown old;

Passion or conquest, wander where they will,

Attend upon them still.

But now they drift on the still water

Mysterious, beautiful;

Among what rushes will they build,

By what lake's edge or pool

Delight men's eyes, when I awake some day

To find they have flown away?

Read these lines from Stanza 2 in the poem.

All suddenly mount

And scatter wheeling in great broken rings

How do the words "scatter wheeling" affect the poem?

A. They suggest a chaotic mood.

B. They convey a disappointed tone.

C. They create a sense of graceful movement.

D. They reveal a sense of difficulty.

Answers

Answer 1

Answer 2

The words "scatter wheeling"  reveal a sense of difficulty in the poem..  Therefore, the correct option is option D.

Poems are a type of literary expression that provoke feelings, communicate ideas, and produce aesthetic beauty through language and imagery. Poems are frequently written in poetry and use a variety of devices, including rhyme, rhythm, and metre, to establish a certain structure and make an impact.

The terms "scatter" and "wheeling" in the line "All suddenly mount / And scatter wheeling in great broken rings," imply a sense of difficulty in the swans' motions. The words "scatter" and "wheeling" suggest that the swans are moving in a circular or spinning motion, respectively.

Answers

Answer:

"Keeping faith," means to be true, consistent and honest with one's words or promises.

Machiavelli's advice is to his followers is that princes should break their promises if it's no longer in their favour to keep it or if events change. He also advised that they lied about the reason why the faith was broken.

He stated that a ruler should always tell people what they want to hear regardless of how true or false it is.

Liverotto is an example of a prince who sized political power via unscrupulous means. After serving in the Army, he returns home and sized power by slaughtering the powerful men under his uncle in the guise that he had come to impress them with the army.

Answer:

                               HISTORY OF GREEK DRAMA

Early Greek theatre started around the 6th Century in the capital Athens with tragic plays being done at religious gatherings. From tragic plays, there was a shift to comedy. The earliest known playwrights such as Sophocles and Aristophanes were the 'founding fathers' of Greek drama.

Tragic plays were popular and one of the first genres of plays done in Greece then partly because of the rituals which were carried out in the worship of Dionysos which included sacrifice of goats and a ceremony that involved the wearing of masks, drinking rites that most times had worshippers losing control of themselves and behaving strangely, as if they were another person just like the way dramatists/actors were known to do.

Infact, Dionysos was referred to as the god of Greek theatre as it was in the worship of the god that Greek drama began. The ritual of the dance and singing was achievable because of an "aulos player" which made use of rhythms.

A theatre back then was in an open space that had beautiful acoustics and could hold a large number of male spectators. Early plays were free to attend and the plots of a tragic drama was most times based on Greek myths and legends. There was always a sense of good and bad, right and wrong, light and darkness and because of this constant conflict, there was no violence on the stage because it was not allowed and even the death of characters were spoken offstage and not witnessed by the audience.

Performers on the stage could act the characters of gods and much later, he would speak to the leader of the chorus who were all male and they would only sing and dance but not speak. The word "thespian" was gotten from Thespis and he was the one credited with the above innovation.

A play could only have a maximum of three actors on stage and because of this, one performer could take on multiple roles at the same time.

Roman mosaic depicting actors and an aulos player (House of the Tragic Poet, Pompeii).

The architectural form of theatre in Rome has been linked to later, more well-known examples from the 1st century BC to the 3rd Century AD.[1] The theatre of ancient Rome referred to as a period of time in which theatrical practice and performance took place in Rome has been linked back even further to the 4th century BC, following the state’s transition from monarchy to republic.[1] Theatre during this era is generally separated into genres of tragedy and comedy, which are represented by a particular style of architecture and stage play, and conveyed to an audience purely as a form of entertainment and control.[2] When it came to the audience, Romans favored entertainment and performance over tragedy and drama, displaying a more modern form of theatre that is still used in contemporary times.[2]

'Spectacle' became an essential part of an everyday Romans expectations when it came to theatre.[1] Some works by Plautus, Terence, and Seneca the Younger that survive to this day, highlight the different aspects of Roman society and culture at the time, including advancements in Roman literature and theatre.[1] Theatre during this period of time would come to represent an important aspect of Roman society during the republican and imperial periods of Rome.[1]

Origins of Roman theatre

Rome was founded as a monarchy under Etruscan rule, and remained as such throughout the first two and a half centuries of its existence. Following the expulsion of Rome's last king, Lucius Tarquinius Superbus, or "Tarquin the Proud," circa 509 BC, Rome became a republic and was henceforth led by a group of magistrates elected by the Roman people. It is believed that Roman theatre was born during the first two centuries of the Roman Republic, following the spread of Roman rule into a large area of the Italian Peninsula, circa 364 BC.

Following the devastation of widespread plague in 364 BC, Roman citizens began including theatrical games as a supplement to the Lectisternium ceremonies already being performed, in a stronger effort to pacify the gods. In the years following the establishment of these practices, actors began adapting these dances and games into performances by acting out texts set to music and simultaneous movement.

As the era of the Roman Republic progressed, citizens began including professionally performed drama in the eclectic offerings of the ludi (celebrations of public holidays) held throughout each year—the largest of these festivals being the Ludi Romani, held each September in honor of the Roman god Jupiter.[3] It was as a part of the Ludi Romani in 240 BC that author and playwright Livius Adronicus became the first to produce translations of Greek plays to be performed on the Roman stage.[4][5][6]

Prior to 240 BC, Roman contact with northern and southern Italian cultures began to influence Roman concepts of entertainment.[7] The early Roman stage was dominated by: Phylakes (a form of tragic parody that arose in Italy during the Roman Republic from 500 to 250 BC), Atellan farces (or a type of comedy that depicted the supposed backwards thinking of the southeastern Oscan town of Atella; a form of ethnic humor that arose around 300 BC), and Fescennine verses (originating in southern Etruria).[7] Furthermore, Phylakes scholars have discovered vases depicting productions of Old Comedy (e.g. by Aristophanes, a Greek playwright), leading many to ascertain that such Comedic plays were presented at one point to an Italian, if not "Latin-Speaking" audience as early as the 4th century.[7] This is supported by the fact that Latin was an essential component to Roman Theatre.[7] From 240 BC to 100 BC, Roman theatre had been introduced to a period of literary drama, within which classical and post-classical Greek plays had been adapted to Roman theatre.[7] From 100 BC till 476 AD, Roman entertainment began to be captured by circus-like performances, spectacles, and miming while remaining allured by theatrical performances.[

Consider the complex character Tajima Shume in “Tajima.” How do Tajima’s actions and interactions advance the plot and develop a theme in the story? In your response, describe a theme of the story and explain how the author uses characterization to develop the theme and advance the plot. Use evidence from the text to support your response. Your response should be at least three complete paragraphs.

Answers

Answer:

Tajima was a ronin who was well-read and also loved traveling. On one of his travels, he met with a wandering priest and found out they were going the same place and they struck up a conversation to make their journey smoother and before long they were talking about more intimate affairs.

The priest tells the ronin Tajima about his desire to erect a monument for Buddha and how much he has gotten so far which was two hundred ounces of silver. Tajima immediately has it in his heart that he must have possession of that money.

During a boat ride, Tajima tripped the priest and he fell over and drowned.

Taking the priest's money, he took on a new name Tokubei and began trading with the money and soon amassed great wealth

Three years after, he began to be haunted by the ghost of the priest until he was thought to be mad.

A nearby priest was called to attend to Tokubei and it was discovered that the priest didn't drown all along but survived and forgave Tokubei and asked him to repent. Tokubei gave him the money he stole plus interest and lived happily after.

The theme of the story is "Poverty drives a man to crimes which he repents of in his wealth."

The author used indirect characterization

*a ronin is a samurai without a master, without honor.

“He is a genius and an athlete, is under-handicapped, and should be regarded as extremely dangerous.”

“My God—” said George, “that must be Harrison!”

“Gee—I could tell that one was a doozy,” said Hazel.

Irony can be defined as the state of affairs that is contradictory opposite to what one would normally expect.

How does Leaphorn feel about change?

Answers

Answer: He is resistant to some Navajo taboos, but feels open to change If that is necessary to get into Navajo's behavior and solving the case.

Explanation: Joe Leaphorn is a veteran detective whose mission is to solve a criminal case. To do that, he realizes that he must leave his world view, and analyze the rules, conversations, and behavior of the Navajo community. Throughout the story, he gets more involved in getting to understand their behavior rather than solving the case itself.

Answer and Explanation:

Joe Leaphorn was a fictional character which has created by Tony Hillerman, who was a mystery writer. He was as traditional as his grandfather. He valued him a lot. He was a police officer and to handle the crimes he used his Navajo believes. He uncovered the culprits using his old traditional belief-system. In Navajo, they believed that nature and man depend upon each other. Moreover, we can’t separate them.

Despite his traditional views, he was restricted to some taboo of Navajo beliefs. He was of the view that many people believe in those systems, which resulted in violence.

Furthermore, he was the person who can change himself according to the character the people around him want to be. He was trying to change himself the way white men live. Because he was unable to understand, Ted Issac left his love of life when she needed him.
