Read the following prompt, and then write a claim in response. Explain the parts of this prompt that influenced the way you wrote the claim.
Passage
Every year, the eighth graders at your middle school take a trip to Washington, D.C., to meet your government representatives and see the important historical sites. This year, though, your principal is thinking about canceling the trip and using the money to make some much-needed improvements to the school building. Write an essay in which you argue for or against canceling the trip, and give at least two reasons to support your answer.

Answers

Answer 1

The school should follow through with the eighth grade field trip.

it is important for students to learn interactively, and field trips can be an amazing way to learn in a way students enjoy. This could be a fun experience for these students, while still being educational.

Answer 2

Answer:

I believe that we should use the money to repair the school building and cancel the trip because repairing the school building is more important to improving the students' daily lives and preventing dangerous accidents from occurring.

The part of this prompt that influenced the way I wrote the claim was the part that said much-needed improvements to the school building.

What is  iambic pentameter?

Iambic pentameter is a metrical pattern found in poetry, most notably in English poetry. It is made up of five pairs of metrical feet, or iambs, that alternate between an unstressed (or more) syllable and a stressed syllable.

Each foot begins with one unstressed syllable and ends with one stressed syllable. Iambic pentameter lends a particular rhythm and flows to English poetry, and it has been utilized by many notable authors, including William Shakespeare, John Milton, and Edgar Allan Poe.

Throughout the English Renaissance, when various poets began using it in their works, it has been an essential component of the English language.

Writing prompt: Write an argumentative essay for or against maintaining traditional coming-of-age ceremonies, such as a bar mitzvah or a quinceañera. Help?

Answers

Answer:

Do you have any traditional coming-of-age ceremonies, such as a bar mitzvah or a quinceañera? Well good for you! I believe we should maintain these beautiful traditions for many reasons. They can be fun, and especially awarding; how accomplishing it would feel to know that you have completed a large step in life! But let’s talk about some of the traditions and what they are.

First, what’s a bar mitzvah? It is the religious initiation ritual of a Jewish boy who has passed the age of 13 and is considered able to follow religious precepts and qualified to take part in public worship. And widely celebrated by Latinos, the quinceañera represents a significant landmark in the life of a girl. Part birthday celebration, part rite of passage, it symbolizes a girl's entry into womanhood as she turns 15.

Now we can discuss why we should always maintain them. First of all, they are quite significant. They have great significance behind them. Growing up is a very important part of life, which is what these traditions honor. And these events can be enjoyable, and they can be especially accomplishing. But there's another justification for this as well.

Secondly, these cultural traditions are very beautiful. For example, the quinceañera is a very pretty thing to see, because they find very beautiful dresses and outfits to wear, and the bar/bat mitzvah with the fancy Torah scroll! However, although the quinceañera is a pretty sight to see, I do believe the meaning of it is quite peculiar. Apparently, the point is to celebrate going into womanhood, and the readiness of marriage. But I do believe that 15 is too young to be considered a grown woman and be ready for marriage. But as long as they don’t rush the girl that is being celebrated into all of that, I do believe the tradition should be continued.

In conclusion, I agree that these cultural traditions can endure as long as the boys and girls who are celebrated do not hurry into activities that are more suitable for older individuals, such as the quinceañera and the readiness to marry. So what do you make of that? Do you agree these traditions are worth maintaining?

Describe one major INTERNAL conflict in the book "refugee" and how it was resolved.

Answers

Answer:

The main conflict in the book Refugee by Alan Gratz is that between the three children and the regimes from which they're trying to escape. Adults would find such a conflict difficult to resolve, but as children, Josef, Isabel, and Mahmoud find it especially hard.

The distinction between the two is important… So, refugees and IDPs have each fled home to survive. Refugees have crossed an international border to find safety. Internally displaced persons (IDPs) have found safety somewhere within their own country

In this excerpt from the “Mother Holle” by the Brothers Grimm, which sentence contains direct characterization?

1. [Once upon a time there was a widow who had two daughters; one of them was beautiful and industrious, the other ugly and lazy.] The mother, however, loved the ugly and lazy one best, because she was her own daughter, and so the other, who was only her stepdaughter, was made to do all the work of the house, and was quite the Cinderella of the family. 2. [Her stepmother sent her out every day to sit by the well in the high road, there to spin until she made her fingers bleed.] 3. [Now it chanced one day that some blood fell on to the spindle, and as the girl stopped over the well to wash it off, the spindle suddenly sprang out of her hand and fell into the well.] She ran home crying to tell of her misfortune, but her stepmother spoke harshly to her, and after giving her a violent scolding, said unkindly, "As you have let the spindle fall into the well you may go yourself and fetch it out."

Read the excerpt from the story Animals in the Zoo.

It was time for Ryan's mom to examine the tamarins, so they headed to the Primate Discovery Center. They walked into the veterinarian's room so that his mother could examine the tamarins. The public wasn't allowed to see them until Ryan's mother had looked them over and made sure they were healthy. The room was white, very sterile, and looked like an operating room that you would see on TV. Ryan's eyes widened and a look of uneasiness crossed his face. He was scared, and his mother noticed right away.

"Don't worry, we won't be operating on the tamarins today. We are just checking their health and looking at their eyes, ears, and hands during this visit. We want to make sure they are healthy enough to be put into their enclosure," she said. Just then, a zoo employee brought in the two tamarins, and Ryan immediately understood why they were called cotton-top tamarins. They had white tufts of hair on top of their heads. The zoo employee told Ryan and his mom that these two tamarins were the first of many to come to the zoo. If these two stayed healthy and appeared to be happy in their enclosure, the zoo would be able to get even more tamarins to fill the exhibit which is why they wanted to make sure they had an expert come in to examine them.

Read the excerpt from the story Winter Driving.

As he came around a bend in the road, he could feel his tires slip and slide on the ice. But the ice wasn't his only problem. His eyes grew wide when he saw a small hill straight ahead. He scrunched his eyebrows as he concentrated on staying on the road. He worried for a minute since he was driving slowly and the ice on the road might prevent him from making it up the hill. He drove slowly until he got to the base of the hill. He started making his way up, but it wasn't long before his tires started to spin on the ice. He continued, slow and steady, squeezing the steering wheel so tightly that his knuckles were turning white.

Eventually, Jesper made it to the top of the hill. Phew, he thought. He pulled over so that he could release the steering wheel from his tight grasp. He squeezed his hands into fists a few times to get the blood flowing through his fingers once again. He took a few breaths and continued driving. The snow was still falling, and he knew he definitely didn't want to get stuck sleeping in his car. He had come this far, and he was determined to make it all the way home.

Read the excerpts from "opening statements from John F. Kennedy and Richard M. Nixon First Televised Debate."

Kennedy: I'm not satisfied until every American enjoys his full constitutional rights. If a Negro baby is born--and this is true also of Puerto Ricans and Mexicans in some of our cities--he has about one-half as much chance to get through high school as a white baby.

Nixon: We are for programs that will expand educational opportunities, that will give to all Americans their equal chance for education, for all of the things which are necessary and dear to the hearts of our people.

Which statement best compares Nixon's and Kennedy's positions on educational opportunity?

Kennedy wishes to expand the educational needs of minorities, while Nixon is much more focused on helping these individuals achieve financial stability.

Both claim they wish to expand educational opportunity, but Kennedy offers more explanation about which populations he would like to specifically target with expansion programs.

Both claim that they would like to expand educational opportunities, but Nixon is much more specific about the populations he would like to address with expansion programs.

Kennedy wishes to expand educational opportunities for minorities, while Nixon argues that doing so will require unnecessary government interference.

Answers

Answer: Both claim they wish to expand educational opportunity, but Kennedy offers more explanation about which populations he would like to specifically target with expansion programs.

Explanation:

The statement that establishes a comparison between the stand taken by Nixon and Kennedy regarding educational opportunity:

B). Both...but Kennedy...programs.

Educational Opportunity

The perspective adopted by both Nixon, as well as, Kenndy is to enhance the size of opportunities present in the domain of education.

However, the distinction between the two comes into play when Kennedy lays additional emphasis on demonstrating and depicting the populations that would be addressed and programs as per that section of the population.

Thus, option B is the correct answer.
