The painful truth is our world is changing and it may very well be our fault. The temperature is rising polar summers are getting longer and longer and landfills continue to grow. These are all effects of our gluttonous ways taking more of what we already have driving around aimlessly and littering. I believe that these need to stop. People say change is not easy it takes time, but mankind has been changing for thousands of years adapting to the world around us. However, some people have changed or at least made a turn for the better although not everybody is on the boat.

There are simple things we can do to make a stand against the wasteful world. Instead of buying plastic water bottles just get a reusable one and refill it at home or if you cannot for some reason at least recycle the bottles. I mean really it’s not impossible to get a reusable water bottle and refill it honestly I think they should either stop selling plastic water bottles or at least make a law that you have to recycle them haven’t you ever been irked buy crushed water bottles laying all over the ground or have you ever heard of the pacific trash vortex it’s a giant heap of litter in the middle of the pacific ocean and its estimated to be about twice the size of Texas. Think about it if that stuff had been recycled first of all it would not be there and second, thousands of marine creatures’ lives would be saved.

Sure, buying a new eco-friendly car is not on your to-do list but just stop driving around aimlessly. Have you ever been sitting around outside and you see a car and you know it’s just another car but then a few minutes later you see it again and you’re like hey there’s the same car I just saw and you know it’s still just a car but then you see it several more times and then it starts to get under your skin you think on a wonderful day like today why would someone be just driving around? If you need something to do just run outside or in a gym. Also if you don’t mind in the summer you can turn off that a

But if you can’t do any of that you can at least do this one thing don’t litter. I cannot tell you how many times I have gone outside or to a park and seen trash thrown about. How hard is it to walk over to a trash can and drop it in? Besides the trash sitting on the ground soaking up water and baking in the sunlight is revolting cannot you tell the look, the smell everything about it? If you say I don’t even go outside so I don’t litter well I can tell you something sitting inside I’m guessing you’re using electricity somehow and to make electricity they burn coal and yes it doesn’t release many fumes but after a while it adds up so if it’s a great day nice and sunny outside go on out. Yes, in the middle of winter those days don’t come by often but don’t sit around with all the lights on watching TV while cooking something in the oven or microwave. You can do something inside without using electricity read a book or play a board game no you don’t always have to do that you can still watch TV and other things just every once and a while turn it off go outside or read a book or something of that matter.
Now you don’t have to do everything I just said you don’t have to join every single support group you possibly can and you don’t have to make giant changes it just takes a small change from each and every one of us that adds up and makes one great big difference.

This age-old adage has been passed down through the generations. Typically, it’s an offhand response from a parent to a child when someone has said something that hurt the child’s feelings. After all, as long as there’s no physical damage, then everything must be fine, right? Hurtful words are often treated as inconsequential. People assume they can be easily brushed aside and smoothed over with a flimsy apology on the part of the perpetrator.

But the truth is, words can hurt — in more ways than one — and the effects often far outweigh any scrape or bruise.

In today’s world, our stories are no longer limited to simple word-of-mouth tales or even hard-bound books. Words are digital and far-reaching, passed around on websites, on social media, and in text messages. More often than not, the words we publish online are not really for the benefit of others, but for ourselves. Writer Gracy Olmstead says, “in the world of internet and social media, another narrative has begun to reign supreme: namely, the self-narration.”

So, what happens when the words we use become more about self-gratification than genuinely helping or communicating with others? The result can be anything from shameless selfies to cyberbullying, and the effects are tangible.

The Texas Education Code defines bullying as an act that “exploits an imbalance of power and involves written or verbal expression.” This has recently expanded to include digital forms of communication. These include “sending vicious text messages, emails or instant messages,” and “spreading rumors or gossip by posting it to social networking sites.” The sneaky thing about cyberbullying is that because it’s not physical, we underestimate its negative effects. With the anonymity and distance the internet provides, cyberbullies don’t have to face the consequences of their actions, and often feel free to say whatever they want about others.

History has proven that words can be just as potent weapons as — if not more so than — sticks and stones. During World War II, “the Nazi regime employed propaganda to impress upon German civilians and soldiers that the Jews were not only subhuman but also dangerous enemies.” The words of the German government became the defining narrative of an entire group of people. While this false propaganda seems a far cry from the problems facing teenagers today, they all demonstrate the impact of words.

Novelist Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie put it simply when she said that the stories we tell are often about power. “Power is the ability not just to tell the story of another person, but to make it the definitive story of that person,” Adichie said. Perhaps the answer is not to fight to be heard, but rather to learn to listen. When we are empowered to tell our own stories or share our own points of view, our words can have positive, transformative effects. They can help people understand other experiences and see the world differently.
