Read the excerpt from Levitt and Dubner’s Freakonomics.

There is a tale, “The Ring of Gyges,” that Feldman sometimes tells his economist friends. It comes from Plato’s Republic. A student named Glaucon offered the story in response to a lesson by Socrates—who, like Adam Smith, argued that people are generally good even without enforcement. Glaucon, like Feldman’s economist friends, disagreed. He told of a shepherd named Gyges who stumbled upon a secret cavern with a corpse inside that wore a ring. When Gyges put on the ring, he found that it made him invisible. With no one able to monitor his behavior, Gyges proceeded to do woeful things—seduce the queen, murder the king, and so on. Glaucon’s story posed a moral question: could any man resist the temptation of evil if he knew his acts could not be witnessed? Glaucon seemed to think the answer was no. But Paul Feldman sides with Socrates and Adam Smith—for he knows the answer, at least 87 percent of the time, is yes.

The example in the excerpt helps the authors arrive at which of the following conclusions?
A.) The majority of people are corrupt.
B.) The majority of people are honest.
C.) Glaucon and Paul Feldman were wrong.
D.) Socrates and Adam Smith were wrong.

Answers

Answer 1

Answer: C. The majority of people are honest.

Explanation: took the test on edge 2021

also: the sentence here is what provides the answer.  Glaucon seemed to think the answer was no. But Paul Feldman sides with Socrates and Adam Smith—for he knows the answer, at least 87 percent of the time, is yes.

Answer 2

After reading the excerpt from "Freakonomics," we can say the example in it helps the authors arrive at the conclusion that:

B. The majority of people are honest.

The final lines of the excerpt reveal what we need to know to answer the question. The authors ask if people are able to resist temptation when they know no one is watching them. And they also provide the answer: 87% of people are indeed able to resist temptation. In other words, the majority of people are honest. They do not need to be constantly watched in order to do what is right.

A Summary and Analysis of the Prometheus Myth

The story of Prometheus stealing fire from the gods is, like the story of Pandora’s Box, an important ‘origin-story’ from Greek myth.

But there’s much more to Prometheus than the ‘stealing fire’ story. Let’s delve into the world of Greek mythology, from over two thousand years ago, to see why Prometheus is such a central, and fascinating, figure in ancient myth.

Prometheus was the son of Iapetus and Clymene. Iapetus was a Titan, the Titans being the group of gods who preceded the Olympian gods, so-named because they resided on Mount Olympus.

Prometheus, then, was one of the first gods, a cousin of Zeus and a brother of Atlas, as well as two other Titans, Moneotius and Epimetheus. But Prometheus is also credited with creating the very first humans from clay, so he has a central place in the Greek pantheon. And he would continue to be a friend to mankind.

Curiously, Prometheus’ name is said to mean ‘forethought’, with his brother Epimetheus’ name literally meaning ‘afterthought’. However, an alternative theory states that the name Prometheus is cognate with the Vedic pra math, which literally means ‘to steal’, which would obviously make sense given the story of Prometheus stealing fire and giving it to humans (of which more below). So, although Prometheus may mean ‘forethought’, we cannot be sure – even though it’s often repeated as though it’s incontrovertible fact.

And the Vedic connection points up Prometheus’ links with other trickster gods in other civilisations. Most pantheons have one: Norse legends have Loki, while the Sumerians had Enki, and the Vedic texts had Mātariśvan, who even brought fire to humankind.

As with the tale of Pandora’s Box, the story of Prometheus stealing fire from the gods first turns up in the work of Hesiod, in his Theogony. (We’ve written about Hesiod’s other great poem, the Works and Days, here.) And as with the story of Pandora’s Box, which wasn’t actually a box at all, there is plenty that we get wrong, misremember, or simply do not know about the actual myth, as it was first outlined in Hesiod.

Explanation:

Answer:

In Greek mythology, the Titan Prometheus had a reputation as being something of a clever trickster and he famously gave the human race the gift of fire and the skill of metalwork, an action for which he was punished by Zeus, who ensured everyday that an eagle ate the liver of the Titan as he was helplessly chained

Injured Dog Checks Herself into Local Animal Hospital

OYSTER BAY, Del. — Mia, a six-year-old German Shepherd, limped into the Oyster
Bay Animal Hospital early yesterday morning without her owners. Dr. Danielle Kim,
the veterinarian on duty at the time, examined Mia and noticed an infected cut on Mia’s right front paw.
Dr. Kim treated Mia’s wound and contacted the owners, Sharon and Norton McKirdy of nearby Driftwood, whose contact information was found on Mia’s tags. Mia had been missing for two days, and although her owners were relieved to have found her, they were surprised to hear that their pet had taken herself to get treatment for her injury.
“I have no idea how Mia found her way to that particular animal hospital,” said Mrs. McKirdy. “We’ve never taken her there before. Besides, she hates going to the vet.”
Dr. Kim was equally surprised. “I’ve been a veterinarian for almost 12 years, but I’ve never seen a dog seek her own care,” she said.
