Read this excerpt from The Great Fire.

When William Lee reached Goll's drugstore, he was gasping for air and frantic. In a breathless voice, Lee demanded the key to the alarm box that was mounted on the outside of the store. Bruno Goll refused to hand it over, insisting that a fire truck had already passed.

Lee had no time to argue with Goll. He was too concerned about the safety of his family, so he hurried back to them almost immediately. He got there just in time to see the fire taking hold of his neighbor's shed and fence, while the breeze blew a rain fire on his property. Two things were very clear to Lee: first, despite what Goll had said, no fire engines had arrived, and, second, his house was about to catch fire.

Why was William Lee frantic and breathless when he first arrived at Goll’s drugstore?

He was angry at the owner for refusing to sound the alarm and for lying about the fire engines.
He was confused about who had informed the firefighters of the fire and why there were trucks driving by.
He knew there was a fire burning near his home, and he wanted to sound the alarm as quickly as possible.
He knew that the fire would be massive and firefighters would not be able to control the flames.

Answers

Answer:

He knew there was a fire burning near his home, and he wanted to sound the alarm as quickly as possible.

Explanation:

The question wants us to identify why Lee was breathless when he first arrived at Goll's drugstore. Therefore, Lee could not have been angry at the owner for refusing to sound the alarm since this happened after Lee arrived at the drugstore.

Lee could not have been confused about who had informed the firefighters since Goll said a fire truck already passed.

Lastly, Lee could not have been worried about firefighters not being able to control the flames considering how a fire truck had already passed and there were no fire engines at his house.

Which version of the sentence is most concise?

The lamprey has the ability to latch on and ultimately weaken its prey.
The reason the lamprey is successful is because of its ability to latch on to prey.
The lamprey is successful because it can latch on to and weaken its prey.
The lamprey actually latches on to its victims, specifically sucking the life out of them.

Answers

Answer:

The lamprey has the ability to latch on and ultimately weaken its prey.

Explanation:

A concise statement is one that is not too wordy but is rather straightforward and retains the original meaning intended by the author. When sentences are too wordy, the real meaning being conveyed could be lost.

Concise statements are expressed in as few words are possible so as to retain the interest of the reader. This will also prevent the reader from skipping around in order to get the main point. With these in mind, the first option is the most concise statement.

Discuss the limits and opportunities you may have for being able to set and meet life goals. How much do you believe in choice and self-determination? Do you feel outside social factors or something about your own nature keeps you from charting your life course? Do you feel you have more or less self-determination than other people such as friends, classmates, family members, or even celebrities?

Answers

Answer:

See explanation for answer.

Explanation:

As far as limits go, I have ADHD. So I struggle with meeting goals on time, especially long-term goals. I do believe in myself very much but I have my limits such as everyone else does. I lose patience and focus easily. So if my goal doesn't seem in reach I generally quickly determinate it or procrastinate with it. Seeing other people achieve their goals does make me feel like I can never do enough sometimes. Most of the time however it is my own nature that keeps me from meeting and accomplishing my goals. My self-determination is not the problem, I am plenty determined or just as determined as others to meet my goals, I just struggle more internally to do so than others do.
