Read the excerpt from "President Obama's Third Annual Back to School Speech.”

"Those are all questions that date back to this class that I took back in 8th grade. And here’s the thing: I still don’t always know the answers to all these questions. But if I’d have just tuned out because the class sounded boring, I might have missed out on something that not only did I turn out enjoying, but has ended up serving me in good stead for the rest of my life."

What argument does President Obama make in this excerpt?

Classes taken when young have a lasting impact on one's life.

Students should be open to new learning experiences.

Boring classes are just as important as interesting ones.

It is acceptable to do poorly in a class if you remember the material.

Answers

Answer: B) Students should be open to new learning experiences.

Who was President Obama?

Barack Obama is an American politician who served as the 44th President of the United States from 2009 to 2017. Born in Hawaii in 1961, Obama attended Columbia University and Harvard Law School before working as a civil rights attorney and community organizer in Chicago. During his presidency, Obama implemented various policies on healthcare, education, foreign affairs, and the economy, among other issues.

He suggests that even if a class sounds boring, students should still be open to learning from it, as it may end up serving them well later in life. He highlights the importance of being engaged in the learning process, even if it is not always easy or immediately rewarding.

Ultimately, Obama's argument emphasizes the importance of being open-minded and curious about the world, and recognizing that even seemingly mundane experiences can offer valuable lessons.

Writing Prompt 2 (Informative): Art Spiegelman,
in Maus, and Shirley Hughes, in Hero on a Bicycle,
wrote fictionalized narratives based on the real-
life horrors of World War II. Describe how the
characters in each book found creative ways to
survive. Use evidence from both texts to support
your ideas.

Answers

Answer:

Art Spiegelman, in Maus, and Shirley Hughes, in  Hero on a Bicycle, both wrote about the lives of fictional characters who, during the Second World War, struggled to stay alive and keep away from Nazi forces. Both characters in both stories discovered new and creative ways to sneak around forbidden areas either for entertainment or for money and materials. Each character had his own way of surviving and clinging on to life. Vladek in  Maus, for example, found out that he could trade and purchase materials without using coupons (coupons were necessary to purchase goods for Poland Jews) to make some extra cash! He visited friends, family members, or shops that had owed him money from before the war to provide himself and his family with food and materials that were crucial for survival during wartime. Even when he was caught, he thought about clever ideas that managed to release him from the grasp of Nazi forces. On page 85, for example, Vladek Spiegelman made his ILLEGAL sugar business look as it was LEGAL! Vladek explained how "one time I [Vladek] had 10 or 15 kilos of sugar to deliver" when the Nazi forces asked him "'What are you carrying?'" He then fooled the forces by saying "'I'm taking it over to my grocery store.' I [Vladek] made so they would think it was legal. I went to the back door where I had to deliver... and they let me go without even checking my papers!" This description of Vladek's clever and quick thinking is just ONE of the examples of his creative ways of survival.

Paulo Crivelli on Hero on a Bicycle  also found creative ways to stay away from midnight crawlers in Florence. He avoided specific routes, dodged drunkards, and steered clear from thugs to keep himself and his beloved bicycle safe. This section of the text by author  Shirley Hughes on  Hero on a Bicycle  proves the smart actions of fictional thirteen-year-old Paulo Crivelli. The text states how Paulo "had learned how to dodge drunks and gangs of boys much tougher than he was, to dismount and whisk around corners to avoid the civil or military police, and to keep well within the shadow of the wall in deserted squares."  This section from the text proves how Paulo, similar to Vladek, was smart, creative, and skillful in avoiding threats during the Second World War.

Write a short paragraph between 60-80 words. about a risk you have taken. Describe what happened. Make sure you clearly explain your reasons for taking this risk. Say what you learnt from this risky experience.

Answers

Answer:

A risk I have taken is becoming emotional numb. Which didn't seem smart at first, which is why it was a risk. The reason I took this risk is for the gain, if I did detach from emotions pain wouldn't hurt as much. But, at the same time I wouldn't feel things when something good would happen. How I did this was telling my self the truth, people are going to die, leave, and betray someday. To think about situations that can make me emotionally hurt and accept them. Remind myself that emotions are hormones and chemically reactions. They are only made for reproduction, to avoid people, think before I speak. Keep a reminder of how people, and in the past they destroyed eachother for the most funniest reasons. All at the same time keeping myself busy. What I've learned from this is that this is the body natural response to much feelings. We as humans aren't meant for this so it was bound to happen sooner or later. If I ever do feel anything it's mostly anger, anger overpowers all. Now that this happened I don't have remorse for it, it's great.

According to the article, military spending allowed some countries to rebound from the Great Depression.Which paragraph BEST supports the idea outlined above?A. While the causes may be difficult to pin down, we can more accurately examine how countries responded to this challenge. There were both economic and political responses to the Great Depression. The one overwhelming economic response of many countries was to try to become economically self-sufficient and independent. To do this, the governments put very high tariffs on all imported goods, in order to protect their domestic industries. Some governments devalued their currency. By devaluing their currency, those countries made the goods they exported cheaper relative to other countries' manufactured goods. As a result, many countries saw their gross domestic product (GDP) drop during the Great Depression. The GDP is the total value of all goods produced by a country.B. The political responses were much more complicated, but many of those responses can be described as a form of "populism." Populism is neither specifically liberal nor specifically conservative, and in fact, both leftwing and rightwing parties have successfully harnessed it. Populists usually strongly condemn the traditional ruling parties on behalf of the ordinary citizens. Their actions and attitudes are meant to suggest they are part of the ordinary majority rather than an elite group. They also tend to favor government intervention in the economy and even in society.C. The fascist governments in Europe took a third populist path. This is best exemplified by the Nazi regime in Germany. Hitler called for national unity, an end to reparation payments, and a return to the mythic glory days of the German Volk (or people). Hitler also blamed the actions of outsiders, specifically Jews, for the problems of the German people. The German people responded to Hitler's message, and in 1933, Hitler was appointed chancellor, after which he put an end to voting. In large part, the reparations imposed on Germany by the Treaty of Versailles and the financial crisis of the Great Depression created the conditions for the Second World War.D. One way that nations helped end the Great Depression, and at the same time prepared for the next conflict, was to spend billions of dollars on military weapons and equipment. In doing so, these nations created a lot of jobs in the arms industry. Germany, Japan and the USSR put a lot more government funds into building armaments than other countries did.
