In 1935, cane toads were first introduced to Australia from Hawaii as a biocontrol agent. The toads were meant to replace the use of toxic pesticides to reduce the native cane beetle population that was decimating sugar cane, a valuable Australian crop. Since their release, however, cane toads have rapidly multiplied: over 70 years, the population increased from 100 individuals to over 200 million! The toads have devastated local ecosystems, including spreading diseases to native wildlife, preying on native fauna, and out-competing native insectivores for food. Additionally, no evidence has been found that they have had any effect on the cane beetles that they were meant to control. What type of growth model does the cane toad population follow?

Answers

Answer 1

Answer:

Exponential growth model

Explanation:

Populations that experience exponential growth models show an increase in proportion to their size. The increase in the population size depends on the individual´s reproduction rate: a population that grows at constant exponential rate gains individuals faster as the population increases in size.

This model states that populations live in an environment with unlimited resource availability, so the density factor does not influence population growth. There is no density-dependence effect nor competition for resources. Natality and mortality rate do not depend on density. There is a constant growth rate per capita, and it is proportional to the population size.

Exponential growth is hardly seen in nature due to its characteristics.

Almost every environment shows a carrying capacity point. Carrying capacity is the capability of the environment to support a population.

Commonly environments have limited resources and space, and as the population grows, competition increases too. The per capita growth rate is dense-dependent. Eventually, the population reaches the maximum point of carrying capacity, delimited by available resources, such as food or space.

The cane toad is an invasive omnivore species, feeding on anything, going from other animal species to invertebrates and vegetables. In urban areas, they might even feed on dogs food or human food wastes. The species characterizes by its high adaptative capability to different environments, the significant reproductive rate -leaving abundant offspring-, and the toxins produced in the parotids. For these traits, it has become a severe invasive species. Their poison is dangerous and painful, causing irritation of the skin and mucose, and many times, causing blindness. Predators get in contact with this toxin and get poisoned to death. Many native predators have suffered a reduction in their population size due to the effects of the Bufo toad. Also, as they prey on many other species, they eventually affect the ecosystemic equilibrium, driving many native species to extinction.

According to the description of the species and the information provided, we can assume that the population is going through exponential growth. Resources seem to be abundant enough, their reproductive rate is very high, and they are good competitors to native species. In 70 years, its population increased from 100 individuals to 200 million and still growing. It does not seem to be any limiting factor (or not yet at least), nor space nor food or shelter affecting the development. Unless there is something that might limit it, the species will keep showing exponential growth.

Answers

Answer: food web

Explanation:

A food web shows how energy moves from organisms. Producers have 100% of the energy. From there, 10% is transferred to each of the next trophic level.

This is not a food chain because in a food chain, energy simply travels from one organism to the next. A food web is where you have many overlapping food chains. A prey predator interaction is simply the relationship two organisms have. It doesn’t focus on the path of energy through a community. It’s simply like saying “lions hunt gazelles”. This is not mutualism. Mutualism is an example of a symbiotic relationship where both organisms benefit. An example of this is an oxpecker and a rhinos. Rhinos are rid of pests and oxpeckers get food. Both organisms benefit. Other symbiotic relationships include commensalism (one organism benefits, other unaffected) and parasitism (one organism benefit, other is harmed).

A mother's body undergoes many changes to accommodate the developing fetus during pregnancy. Most doctors blame this discomfort on an increase of hormones in the body. Which two organ systems contribute to increased itching and stretch marks during pregnancy?

Answers

Answer:

1. Integumentary System

2. Digestive System and Endocrine System

Explanation:

An organ system combines multiple organs to perform one or more biological functions.

The integumentary system which human skin, is an organ system that protects the outer body. So the stretch marks women experience during pregnancy are evident on the skin, and since it was mentioned in the question that "A mother's body undergoes many changes to accommodate the developing fetus during pregnancy" it can be concluded that the skin stretched due to fetus development.

The digestive system here, the liver, can get disordered by a liver disease known as Cholestasis, which alters the flow of bile produced by the liver for digestion and can lead to bilirubin buildup poisoning blood and causing itchiness that can be experienced during pregnancy.

The Endocrine system is the Hormone center of the body, it affects the mood, and can cause itchiness too.

Which statement is factual

Answers

A I believe should be correct

The factual statement is Asexual reproduction produces offspring that are identical to the parent. Asexual reproduction is a type of reproduction in which offspring are produced from a single parent without the fusion of gametes. Hence option A is correct.

This means that the offspring inherit all of their genes from the parent, and are therefore genetically identical to the parent.

Sexual reproduction, on the other hand, is a type of reproduction in which offspring are produced from the fusion of two gametes, one from each parent.

This means that the offspring inherit genes from both parents and are therefore not genetically identical to either parent.

Therefore, option A) Asexual reproduction produces offspring that are identical to the parent is correct.

1. Translation

2. Cytoplasm

3. Ribosome

Explanation:

Translation is a process whereby the cell uses a mRNA template to produce an amino acid sequence (protein). It is the second stage of gene expression in living organisms.

Translation occurs in the CYTOPLASM of a cell with the help of an organelle called RIBOSOME. The ribosome attaches to the mRNA molecule in the cytoplasm to initiate the process of translation.

What is the global climate?

The long-term distribution of heat and precipitation on Earth's surface is called global climate.

Ocean currents act much like a conveyer belt, transporting warm water and precipitation from the equator toward the poles and cold water from the poles back to the tropics.

Thus, currents regulate global climate, helping to counteract the uneven distribution of solar radiation reaching Earth's surface.

Hence, option A is correct.
