“Kitty has no discretion in her coughs,” said her father; “she times them ill.” What device does Austen use in this sentence? What is its effect on the overall passage? Use specific evidence from the text to support your answer. This is from an excerpt of Pride and Prejudice.
In these lines, we hear that Kitty is constantly coughing, which drives her mother crazy. She wants her to stop, and argues that she is getting on her nerves:
"Stop coughing, Kitty. Please! You're getting on my nerves."
To this statement, Kitty's father replies that "Kitty has no discretion in her coughs."
This is an example of sarcasm, used by Kitty's father to make fun of Kitty's mother. He knows that no one can "time" their coughs to someone else's convenience. However, the statement is not understood by Kitty's mother. Sarcasm refers to the use of a witty and sharp remark that uses irony to show contempt. In this example, it is clear that the father feels some contempt for the mother, which is emphasized by the fact that she does not understand the ironic effect of his words.

Long and short works of fiction have different
characteristics beyond simply the length of
the work. Think of a short story that you like
and a longer work (novel or novella) that you
like. You can use the story and novella from
this unit if no other works come to mind
quickly.
BU I E
Discuss the elements of each work that made
it enjoyable to read. What relationship did the
form of the work (short story, novella, or
novel) have in making it an enjoyable read?
What elements of fiction were strongest in the
work, and how did they impact your
enjoyment of the story? Compare the two
works you chose. How are they
representative of short fiction versus longer
I would choose a fairytale or fable for the short story and discuss the way it was enjoyable because of its simplicity, whimsy, and moral that should clear through the story without excessive twists or turns. Essentially, discuss the benefits of a simple and straightforward plot. As for the long work, choose a novel or novella that discusses a large topic within a complex storyline. For this I would recommend a book such as 1984, Fahrenheit 451, The Barcode Rebellion, or The Outsiders. All of these are great books that discuss various subjects of importance while creating a complex and enjoyable plot for the reader to follow. Shorter fiction tends to be a bit more lighthearted or whimsical than longer fictions like the books I recommended. (This is based in my opinion of longer versus shorter fiction, and there are outliers to my generalization, of course)

Dear Julius,
I am happy to write to you today. How are you and the family?
This year's Independence celebration is the best I have experienced all my life. My school is the best and they gave me the best independence day experience. Every student in my school already anticipated that day because the items of the programme and the rehearsals are already proofs that the day was going to be awesome. The day came and brought no disappointment. There were several activities such as matchpast, tributes to National heroes, choreographies, dramas, to mention but a few. I took a very honorable role of reading the country's post independence history to the congregation. I was very elated to stand in front of such an august gathering.
Several notable personalities graced the occasion with their presence, people like the commissioner for youths and sport, commissioner for information and culture etc.
The speeches of the day were delivered by the proprietor of the school, who is a wonderful orator, and the commissioner for information and culture from whom I heard great words about this country that I never heard in time past. I wish you were a student in my school, you would have been a part of this wonderful event. Nevertheless, I wish to hear back from you on how the independence celebration was done in your school too.
Have a great week ahead my good friend.
Your friend,
Chris.
Answer:
Hi Heesal,
As you already knew that my school just celebrated our Independence day 2020 yesterday. I can’t stand telling you about that. We’ve had a great morning doing many activities with all of our teachers and friends. First of all, we saluted the flag and sang our national anthem. We then raised and lowered the flag, performed one-minute silence, you know, to show the respect for our ancestors who sacrificed for our peace today. After that, our principal made an excellent speech reminding us about the history and encouraging us to study hard to be able to become well-mannered people and contribute to our society. Fortunately, yesterday was a sunny day, so we celebrated all activities in our school yard with a lot of green spaces. Our ceremony ended up with a musical performance. Can you guess who was the singer there? It’s me. I am so proud of me that I could sing in such an important event, it was a lovely song about our innocent adolescence. The school offered us elevenses with home-made cakes, so we could enjoy some sweets while talking to each other and listening to music. I was so satisfied being a part of the ceremony.
That’s all about our Independence day. How about yours?
I am looking forward to hearing from you soon.

Ead the sentence, and use synonym context clues to determine the definition of opprobrium. Although people tend to react to new regulations with disapproval, I have never seen a proposed law face such opprobrium as the proposal to raise the driving age to twenty-one. Based on the sentence, what does the word opprobrium most likely mean? Which word is a synonym for opprobrium?
Answer:
The word opprobrium most likely means "criticism". A word that is a synonym for opprobrium is "disapproval".
Explanation:
Opprobrium means harsh criticism or, depending on the context, shame, discredit, dishonor.. Even if we did not know the word's meaning, we could conclude what it is by taking the whole sentence into consideration.
The sentence talks of people reacting badly -disapproving- new regulations. Then, it claims that no other law has had such a bad reaction as the one for raising the driving age. We can assume opprobrium still refers to disapproving, to a reaction of criticism. As a matter of fact, the word opprobrium is being used as a fancy way to avoid the repetition of "disapproval" in the sentence. We can, therefore, safely say that opprobrium means "criticism" and that "disapproval" is its synonym.
Answer:
1.✔ criticism
2.✔ disapproval

What is an example of situational irony in the excerpt? “‘Her great tragedy happened just three years ago,’ said the child; ‘that would be since your sister’s time.’” “‘Her tragedy?’ asked Framton; somehow in this restful country spot tragedies seemed out of place.” “She rattled on cheerfully about the shooting and the scarcity of birds, and the prospects for duck in the winter. To Framton it was all purely horrible.” “‘I hope you don’t mind the open window,’ said Mrs. Sappleton briskly; ‘my husband and brothers will be home directly from shooting, and they always come in this way.’”
Answer:
"She rattled on cheerfully about the shooting and the scarcity of birds, and the prospects for duck in the winter. To Framton it was all purely horrible."
Explanation:
From the book "The Open Window" by Saki, there is a narrative of Framton waiting for Mrs Sappleton and during his wait, he gets talking with her niece who informs him that there was a tragedy that happened.
She tells him that Mrs Sappleton's husband and two brothers went out for hunting but never came back but since the incident, Mrs Sappleton is still not over the shock and acts as if they would walk in anytime that's why she always leaves the window open till dusk, waiting for them.
This is an example of a situational irony because a situational irony is a type of irony in which the action has an opposite effect on what is intended.
Framton's discovery of the tragedy by the niece is an opposite of what he expected when he came looking for Mrs Sappleton.
The example of situational irony is "She rattled on cheerfully about the shooting and the scarcity of birds, and the prospects for duck in the winter. To Framton it was all purely horrible".
What is situational irony?Situational irony simply means the situation where the expectations and the outcomes are different.
In this case, the situational irony in the passage is "situational irony is "She rattled on cheerfully about the shooting and the scarcity of birds, and the prospects for duck in the winter. To Framton it was all purely horrible". This was different from the expected outcome.

What does the "dust" mentioned in lines 4-5 likely represent? Cite evidence to support your answer. If I should die, think only this of me: That there's some corner of a foreign field That is forever England. There shall be In that rich earth a richer dust concealed; A dust whom England bore, shaped, made aware, Gave, once, her flowers to love, her ways to roam; A body of England's, breathing English air, Washed by the rivers, blessed by suns of home. And think, this heart, all evil shed away, A pulse in the eternal mind, no less Gives somewhere back the thoughts by England given; Her sights and sounds; dreams happy as her day; And laughter, learnt of friends; and gentleness, In hearts at peace, under an English heaven.
Answer:
In the poem, "dust" most likely refers to the body of the dead soldier.
Explanation:
The poem we are analyzing here is called "The Soldier", and it was written by English author Rupert Chawner Brooke. The soldier himself is the speaker in the poem.
Right from the start, he says, "If I should die." From here on, we must imagine this soldier dead, his body lying somewhere in a foreign field. "There shall be / In that rich earth a richer dust concealed" means that his decayed body will mix itself with the earth on which it lies. His body is the "richer dust". It is an old idea, biblical even, that our bodies are made of dust, and to dust they return once we die. However, the dust that is the soldier's body is richer than the dust of the ground. His dust was once alive. It loved and was loved. It cared for and defended his country: "A dust whom / England bore, shaped, made aware, / Gave, once, her flowers to love, her ways to roam; / A body of England's, breathing English air, / Washed by the rivers, blessed by suns of home."

If the house or cabin is "too" insulated, you might want to open a window. You can also use tinder that has sap in it, such as pieces of bark or pine cones. Tinder catches fire first and burns very quickly. The key is to get enough tinder under the kindling so that the kindling begins to burn.

Which of the following can convey setting in a story? Name of character The age of the character The culture of the character The thoughts of a character
Answer:
-The culture of the character
-The thoughts of a character
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Think about what setting means.
The setting is the time, place, and circumstances in which something occurs or develops.
So what out of the four choices helps do that?
The name of the character can't tell you about settings. Its a name not a descriptor. Ex: John.: That doesn't tell you as the reader anything about the time, place, or circumstances.
The age could possibly give you some context. But its can also just be a sentance. Ex: Daisy is 14.: you can get a little bit. But not enought in some circumstances. So for that i marked it as no.

What do you think? Should we study Shakespeare in the 21st century?
ANSWER THIS AND YOU CAN HAVE 50 POINTS Read the following excerpt from “The Gift of the Magi” and answer the question. For there lay The Combs--the set of combs, side and back, that Della had worshipped long in a Broadway window. Beautiful combs, pure tortoise shell, with jewelled rims--just the shade to wear in the beautiful vanished hair. They were expensive combs, she knew, and her heart had simply craved and yearned over them without the least hope of possession. And now, they were hers, but the tresses that should have adorned the coveted adornments were gone. But she hugged them to her bosom, and at length she was able to look up with dim eyes and a smile and say: "My hair grows so fast, Jim! And them Della leaped up like a little singed cat and cried, "Oh, oh!" Jim had not yet seen his beautiful present. She held it out to him eagerly upon her open palm. The dull precious metal seemed to flash with a reflection of her bright and ardent spirit."Isn't it a dandy, Jim? I hunted all over town to find it. You'll have to look at the time a hundred times a day now. Give me your watch. I want to see how it looks on it." Instead of obeying, Jim tumbled down on the couch and put his hands under the back of his head and smiled."Della," said he, "let's put our Christmas presents away and keep 'em a while. They're too nice to use just at present. I sold the watch to get the money to buy your combs. And now suppose you put the chops on." The magi, as you know, were wise men--wonderfully wise men--who brought gifts to the Babe in the manger. They invented the art of giving Christmas presents. Being wise, their gifts were no doubt wise ones, possibly bearing the privilege of exchange in case of duplication. And here I have lamely related to you the uneventful chronicle of two foolish children in a flat who most unwisely sacrificed for each other the greatest treasures of their house. But in a last word to the wise of these days let it be said that of all who give gifts these two were the wisest. O all who give and receive gifts, such as they are wisest. Everywhere they are wisest. They are the magi. The excerpt above is an example of which story element? initiating event plot complications climax setting
Answer:
The answer is:
The author is emphasizing the sense of loss that Della must feel when she realizes she can’t use them.
In the selection from "The Gift of the Magi," the creator O. Henry focuses on the excellence of the Della's looks over that Jim purchases for her. They are uncommon, stunning and costly, and she has consistently needed them. Truth be told, she never believed that she could ever have them. Accordingly, the creator plans to feature the incongruity of the story, which is that she won't have the option to utilize the brushes she has longed for.

Which statement was not a criticism of television media in the 1960s? Television promoted stereotypes. Television encouraged consumerism. Television portrayed an unrealistic view of life. Television promoted patriotism.
Answer:
the last one.
Explanation:
In my mind, the answer is the last one.
Stereotypical characters was a nightmare. It encouraged the wrong type of behavior. It presented the Fonz as a standard of behavior for both girls and boys which was unrealistic.
Commercialism is a criticism. It means that we are in competition with our neighbors to see who has the largest yacht. That's not a very good competition.
Nobody lived like the Fonz.
Though it might not be a virtue now, it certainly is not a bad thing to portray. The answer should be the last one.
