In 2006, beekeepers throughout the United States began to notice something new—and troubling. Adult honeybees, known as worker bees, were disappearing from their hives, seemingly abandoning them. Few or no dead bees were found in the hives, while the queen and larvae were alive and well but without the swarm of worker bees that typically attended them to keep them alive. What had happened?

The phenomenon became so widespread that it soon received a name, Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD) . There was no denying that CCD was a problem; after all, American agriculture depends on the work of honeybees and other pollinators. At least three-quarters of the crops grown in the United States depend on honeybee pollination for their survival. These include such staples as strawberries, blueberries, apples, broccoli, asparagus, and almonds. Without them, both farmers and anyone who enjoys fresh fruits and vegetables will suffer.

But what is causing this problem? Scientists have rigorously studied a variety of possible causes, ranging from genetically modified crops to climate change to cell phone towers. Sadly, nothing has shown to be the cause of the problem. The most likely culprits are pathogens, or disease-causing organisms. These have been found in larger numbers in colonies affected by CCD than in those unaffected. But these pathogens have included various viruses and bacteria, some found in greater concentrations in different parts of the country. If CCD is caused by a single disease, identifying that disease will be difficult.

The CCD epidemic is most likely the result of multiple causes—pathogens, poor nutrition, pesticides, lack of genetic diversity, and habitat loss. Efforts to prevent colony loss have been mildly successful. The number lost has declined each year since 2008. But until a solution to this problem is found, CCD will remain a concern that will threaten not only the future of bees, but also of the people who rely on the food that they help produce.

They are from the town of Aniak, located about three hundred fifty miles west of Anchorage. Forget driving there, you can only reach the town by plane! There are around six hundred residents and one medical clinic, but the doctor only visits once a month. This means that if you are visited by a medical or fire "dragon," getting treatment or being rescued might be difficult. In fact, until the Slayers were formed, there was no emergency service in the town after 4 p.m. To address the problem, the fire chief decided to train qualified teenagers as first responders. He believed that because most of them did not have jobs, they had the time required to take on the responsibility.

Today, the Dragon Slayers respond to about 450 calls per year. They are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The team is made up of 14- to 18-year-old girls and boys. No matter what the emergency, it is important that Dragon Slayers remain calm and have the medical skills to help those who need them. They have over two hundred hours of medical and fire-safety training. All are certified emergency trauma technicians. They must also get passing grades in school and be drug and alcohol free. They are expected to treat everything from minor injuries requiring only first aid, to more serious issues such as heart attacks. They may be called to scenes ranging from small plane crashes to automobile accidents.

Their efforts have saved both lives and property. Just ask a former principal at their high school. At first, he didn't like the idea of Slayers being called out of class to respond to emergencies. However, he changed his mind after suffering a diabetic emergency at school and being cared for by the quick-thinking Slayers. Additionally, if it weren't for the actions of Amanda Hoeldt and several of her Dragon Slayer friends, the community hall might have burned to the ground when it caught fire in 2009. Although not allowed to enter the building, she and the other Slayers set up hoses that eventually put out the blaze, saving the structure. After observing the girls respond to an emergency call, state trooper Sgt. Mike Duxbury commented, "They helped each other out. Gave each other encouragement. They worked as a team."

Amanda says that the Dragon Slayers also benefit from their participation in the program. She feels that she is prepared to handle nearly any situation that comes her way. Through teaching others in her community life-saving skills, she has become more confident in her leadership abilities. Agnes Nicoli, another Slayer, says of her participation in the program, "Being able to save lives and save property is a wonderful feeling." Most Slayers go to college, and many of them choose careers in the medical field. And, just in case you're wondering what happens when a Slayer graduates, he or she is replaced by a "Lizard Killer."
