A Whole New World

Tanisha lay on her bed and stared at the black, bulky camera on her dresser. What on earth had made her father think that she would want something that was practically an antique? He had presented it to her two months ago and still the camera sat, unused, taking up valuable space among her jewelry box and porcelain cat collection.

Tanisha loved taking pictures with her mobile phone and posted regularly on her social media sites. The camera was pretty good even though it was already a few years old. Hundreds of photos of her and her friends had filled the daily stream over the past year, the first year she was allowed to have an account. She occasionally took photos of other things like her cat, Hubble, and hamster, Mr. Lincoln. But most of her pictures were of Tanisha and whomever she was hanging out with that day.

When she had opened this unusual gift, her father had mentioned that it might change the way she saw things. Tanisha didn’t have a clue what he meant. Her vision was fine, wasn’t it?

He had shown her how to focus the lens and what the different buttons were for. He also tried to show Tanisha how to read the “F stop”—whatever that was—but cut the explanation short when he saw Tanisha’s bored look. He suggested that she just “play around” with it. Tanisha had watched as he loaded the film in the back of the camera, carefully using the small lever to wind it around a small black cylinder. Snapping the cover shut, he handed it to her and told her to have fun.

Frankly, “playing” with an ancient camera seemed more like work than fun. Tanisha was accustomed to getting great photos on her camera in an instant. She loved using some of the software tools that allowed her to alter her photos by putting cute borders around them or adding funny features to her friends’ faces.

This camera did, well…nothing.

Yet, Tanisha was intrigued by her father’s insistence on the camera’s value. Why didn’t he sell it, she wondered? When she had asked about this, her father had said that it wasn’t a “money thing.” Apparently, her grandfather had been a photographer, as well as her father—until he no longer had the time for it. With a sigh, she swung her legs off the edge of her bed, stood up, and picked up the camera and its accompanying bag, both seeming to weigh half as much as she did! It was time to see if she could figure out what her father was talking about.

Hmm…what would be her first subject? She carefully brought the camera up to her face so she could see through the viewfinder, which looked like a little window. The gray sky, treetops, telephone wires, and a garbage can came into her sight. These were not suitable subjects. She brought the camera down farther to look at the landscape surrounding her. Living in New Mexico, one saw miles of scenery bathed in brown and green: pinion trees, juniper trees, and dirt. In her mind, that’s all there was. Not much to look at, let alone capture in a photo.

Tanisha walked slowly into the backyard where a few iris bulbs were beginning to emerge with the onset of spring. Still, there were no actual flowers to take advantage of for a photo. Her gaze slowed and perception narrowed until her eyes rested upon a rock.

Really? A rock? She second-guessed herself as she moved closer, thinking that she must be really desperate to settle on this for her picture. There was nothing remarkable about the color, size, or shape of it. But as she got down on her knees and examined the rock, a number of things caught her attention.

First, she found an imprint of a tiny plant embedded on the side of the rock. It was like the world’s smallest fern extending itself up and over the top. Next, she recognized some lichen—small patches of green fungi—covering various spots. She remembered her science teacher talking about the presence of lichen as a sign that the air is clean.

As she placed the rock back where it had previously been, she lay on her stomach and held up the camera. Realizing she wanted to capture the little fern imprint, she instinctively moved that side of the rock toward the light. She lay down again and held up the camera to her eye. Focus, focus—there! She heard the “click” as her finger pressed the button to capture the photo.

What Is It That You Really Need?

Sometimes it seems as if we never get what we want. But sometimes when we do get what we want, we realize that it’s not what we really want. That’s because our wants don’t always match our needs. The solution to this problem is to try to understand and satisfy our real needs.

Psychology is the scientific study of the human mind and human and animal behavior. A lot of psychological research has been done about human needs and how they should be satisfied. Studies have shown that humans have basic needs that must be consistently met. Studies have also shown that there is an order of importance in which these needs must be satisfied. An individual’s basic functional needs must be satisfied before he or she can go on and meet other more creative and self-fulfilling needs.

Abraham Harold Maslow (1908–1970) was an important psychologist who became famous for his studies regarding human needs and wants. He wrote two major works, Motivation and Personality and Toward a Psychology of Being. Maslow stressed that basic needs must first be satisfied before a person is able to be creative or function independently. He created his famous hierarchy of needs theory, which separates human needs into five layers. Each layer in the hierarchy must be satisfied before a person can proceed to the next layer. The five layers of human needs, according to Maslow, are as follows:

1. the physiological needs
2. the safety and security needs
3. the love and belonging needs
4. the esteem needs
5. self-actualization
The Physiological Needs
The physiological needs include the basic requirements for physical survival, such as oxygen, water, protein, salt, sugar, minerals, and vitamins. Other physiological needs include a proper body temperature and pH balance, physical activity, a lack of pain, and adequate sleep.

The Safety and Security Needs
These needs become relevant only after the physiological needs are largely satisfied. The person will then become increasingly interested in such things as being safe and protected and having a stable life. He or she might also begin to need structure and order.

The Love and Belonging Needs
Once a person feels reasonably secure in life and has his or her basic bodily needs satisfied, he or she wants to be a part of a community or group, to have friends, and to be in loving and caring relationships.

The Esteem Needs
This level of needs has two components. The first covers a person’s needs to be respected by others and achieve fame, attention, and dignity. The second component of this level of needs covers a person’s needs for self-respect, confidence, independence, and freedom.

Self-Actualization
The highest level is different from the other levels in a crucial way. All the previous levels discuss needs that need to be satisfied; once they are satisfied, we no longer think about them. If we feel well fed, safe, appreciated, and confident, we don’t think about those needs anymore. But on the complex level of self-actualization, a person continues to feel this need even after he or she has achieved it. This need drives us to be the most complete people we can—to be the best that we can be.

The next time you are feeling as if something is missing from your life, think about Maslow and his theory of needs. Have you really satisfied the basic needs before trying to satisfy the higher levels of needs? Maybe you need to redefine what you are really searching for.

One person who did not allow her disability to limit her was Helen Keller. Keller, who became blind and deaf at the age of one and a half due to illness, learned at a very young age that her life was going to be different. Instead, she had a very dedicated and creative teacher who stuck with Keller throughout her life. This teacher's name was Anne Sullivan. As a result of Sullivan's dedication and Keller's own determination, she learned when many thought she could not.

Learning How to Communicate

Sullivan helped her learn to communicate by using the resources and abilities Keller did have. Keller could touch, taste, and smell. Sullivan taught her to associate hand movements with words. Learning to speak was tackled in a similar way. By feeling lips as they moved, Keller learned how to use her lips to form words. Using such innovative techniques and the resources available to her opened whole new worlds for Keller's learning. Sullivan encouraged and mentored Keller, never letting her give up and always believing the best for her.

An Inspiration to Others

Another way Keller learned to communicate was through writing. As an adult, she attended Radcliffe College, which allowed her to advance her education, even though many people doubted her ability to be successful. While she was there, she wrote her autobiography, which told the world about her struggles and accomplishments. She was able to share her story through Braille, a form of writing using raised dots felt with the fingers. Throughout her entire college career, Anne Sullivan was beside her, encouraging Keller and interpreting the words she could not see and the sounds she could not hear.
