Estos poemas eran recitados por los juglares, profesionales del canto y la recitación que recorrían los pueblos para brindar a su público tanto entretenimiento como información de sucesos recientes. Se cree que, con el paso del tiempo, el público fue memorizando los fragmentos preferidos del cantar, eliminando elementos narrativos que no eran esenciales. Pedirían al juglar que se detuviera y repitiera, especialmente, tal o cual parte. Con el tiempo los poetas empezaron a componer especialmente textos breves, siguiendo el gusto del público, por imitación de los cantares de gesta. Así surgen los “romances”.
DEFINICIÓN POÉTICA: Un romance es un breve poema de carácter épico-lírico, destinado al canto con acompañamiento de algún instrumento musical. El carácter épico está dado por lo narrativo: se cuentan sucesos. A la vez son líricos, porque aparecen los sentimientos y emociones del autor frente a esos hechos.
DEFINICIÓN FORMAL: Los romances son series indefinidas de versos octosílabos con rima asonante en los versos pares. No están divididos en estrofas, aunque las pausas se dan generalmente en los versos que riman. Quizá esto derive de los versos de los cantares de gesta, que eran de dieciséis sílabas. Hay quien afirma que al principio los versos se copiaban en papeles angostos, y por ello se los dividió en ocho sílabas por renglón. Como consecuencia, hay muchos encabalgamientos en los romances.
CLASIFICACIÓN DE ROMANCES
Podemos hablar de dos criterios principales de clasificación. Por un lado, según la época en que se compusieron, hablamos de ROMANCES VIEJOS (anónimos, de transmisión oral, compuestos en los siglos XIV, XV y principios del XVI) y ROMANCES NUEVOS O ARTÍSTICOS (imitación de los viejos, de transmisión escrita, con autor conocido, escritos a partir de la segunda mitad del siglo XVI).
En cuanto a sus temas, diferenciamos cuatro grupos:
a) Romances heroico-caballerescos: tienen tema español, derivado de los cantares de gesta y las leyendas caballerescas (como el Cid, los Infantes de Lara, etc).
b) Romances noticieros o históricos contemporáneos: informan sobre hechos de la época, generalmente relacionados con la guerra entre moros y cristianos, ya sea desde el punto de vista de los españoles (romances fronterizos) o de los árabes (romances moriscos). Estos últimos eran compuestos por autores españoles que adoptaban el punto de vista de sus rivales.
c) Romances novelescos: se basan en hechos ficticios, derivan de novelas y cuentos.
