WRITE what the following people actually said:
1 Jamie said he was working in a factory.

2 Lindy told me she had been working very hard that day.

3 Lucy said she was not going to watch that programme.

4 A newspaper reporter said that he had met some very
interesting contacts through the Internet and arranged an
interview with an author for the following day.

5 Harry said he hadn't seen Tom recently.

6 The writer concluded that whether people liked it or not the
Internet and the opportunities it gave, were there to stay.

7 Harry was taking a long time to get ready, so I told him to
hurry up.

8 The manager told me that those problems were his fault.

Answers

Why might an author include dialect In a story? Check all that apply.
I to allude to a character's regional background
to describe what a particular setting looks like
I to add to the cultural context of a story's setting
I to allude to a character's social background
ID to create a more genuine dialogue between characters

Answers

Answer:

The reasons why an author might include dialect in a story are:

A. to allude to a character's regional background

C. to add to the cultural context of a story's setting

D. to allude to a character's social background

E. to create a more genuine dialogue between characters

Explanation:

A dialect is a variety of language used in a specific area or by a specific group. It is quite common for authors to use dialect in their stories, and there are many reasons for that.

For instance, in Zora Neale Hurston's works, dialect is used to represent the way the characters sound, which is directly connected to their cultural and social backgrounds. Her characters are African Americans who live in rural areas in the south. Many of them may not have had access to higher levels of formal education. Dialect also helps their dialogues sound more genuine, as if a real conversation had been recorded and transcribed. Had Hurston chosen to use formal language in her books, her characters would have been much less realistic and believable.

Read the excerpt from The Time Traveler’s Guide to Elizabethan England.

Food is valuable in Elizabethan England, far more so than in the modern world. A flock of 180 sheep is worth more than the average detached house. The difficulties of transportation mean that the food supply depends heavily on what grows locally and how much surplus is available. It also depends on the season.

Which statement is a logical inference based on details in the passage?

During the Elizabethan period, food was often scarce.
During the Elizabethan period, houses were very cheap.
During the Elizabethan period, sheep were in short supply.
During the Elizabethan period, food was mainly shipped in.

Answers

The correct answer is A. During the Elizabethan period, food was often scarce.

Explanation

According to the passage, it can be inferred that the food was scarce because the excerpt shows arguments such as its value exceeded the price of an average single-family house. In addition, transportation was another factor that increased the value of food, so it largely depended on local cultivation. So the correct answer is A. During the Elizabethan period, food was often scarce.

A Bee Mystery

Recent surveys around the world have found some very sad and troubling news. Bees are not doing well. According to Time: Science & Space, "an estimated ten million beehives ... have been lost since 2006." What's worse, scientists are not sure why. Most beekeepers will tell you that bees tend to die in large numbers every spring. This is normal and necessary to keep a hive of bees healthy. But when the deaths add up to more than half the bees in an entire country, that is something altogether different and dire. Scientists have called this "colony-collapse disorder" or CCD. This name describes the effect, though, and not the cause of the die-out. Scientists simply do not know what is killing the bees.
Many things make it hard for bees. Varroa mites move into a colony and weaken it. Further, these mites carry viruses that attack those that survive. In addition, a new bacterium was recently discovered that attacks bees intestinally and kills them. Beekeepers go to great lengths to protect bees from these invaders, and for many years have been able to control them. All these attackers and the methods used to combat them do stress the bees, however.
Many feel the problem is not some new threat, but a decline in the habitat available to bees. Development of grasslands once home to wild flowers and food for bees has been universal. Pavement makes it easy to drive, but it replaces wild grasses and other food sources for bees. Perhaps, long before the mites and parasites moved in, humans took away enough of the bees' habitat to weaken their health. We plowed under a varied habitat and planted—in many cases—a single plant like beets. Then we sprayed all kinds of chemicals on the beets to keep other bugs away and in doing so also harmed bees. Now, to treat all the mites and other invaders, bee keepers use additional chemicals to kill the invaders. These chemicals also shorten the life of the bees. Have the use of chemicals, loss of habitat, and invading parasites made life impossible for bees? Experts continue to argue various theories, but few have any answers.
Colony collapse disorder is perhaps one of the most mysterious problems modern science has tried to solve. Whether the problem is environmental or an unknown disease, we will all feel the effects if bees continue to decline. Bees affect almost every aspect of the human food chain. From the fruits, vegetables, and grains we eat, to the grasses and grains we feed our livestock, we depend on bees to keep us healthy. According to the Natural Resources Defense Council, bees account for 15 billion dollars in crops. Honey is a treasure for sure, but the real gold is in the strawberries, apples, peaches, and green beans we eat and need to stay healthy ourselves. All told, the outlook for bees is not good. The outlook for humans may not "bee" so good either.

Based on the text, which of the following best describes the effect of Varroa mites on bees?

They destroy the important crops that bees depend on to thrive.
They infest the bees' intestines and cause digestive and other health problems.
They make extra work for beekeepers who are fighting to keep hives healthy.
They threaten the bees directly and introduce viruses and bacteria to the hive.

Read the excerpt from act 5, scene 1, of Julius Caesar.
CASSIUS. Then if we lose this battle,
You are contented to be led in triumph
Through the streets of Rome?
BRUTUS. No, Cassius, no
Think not, thou noble Roman,
That ever Brutus will go bound to Rome.
He bears too great a mind. But this same day
Must end that work the ides of March begun

O It reveals that Brutus and Cassius regret killing

What are Romeo and Juliet?

In Act 4, Scene 3 of "Romeo and Juliet," Juliet is discussing her plan with Friar Laurence to fake her own death using a sleeping potion. During this conversation, Juliet expresses several concerns and fears regarding the plan that she and the friar have devised. Her first fear is that the potion that the friar has given her might not work, and she will wake up before Romeo arrives to take her away. This would mean that she would be trapped in the Capulet family tomb, alone and scared. Her second fear is that the potion might actually kill her, as the friar warned her that the potion could have that effect if she were to take it without following the correct procedures.

Hence, in lines 124 through 132 of Act 4, Scene 3 of Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet," Juliet expresses several concerns and fears about the plan she has just made with Friar Laurence to fake her own death.
