What does the skeleton in Dr. Heidegger's closet symbolize in Nathaniel Hawthorne's story, "Dr. Heidegger's Experiment"? A. The secrets Dr Heidegger is hiding B. The use of skeletons in Dr. Heidegger's experiment C The passage of time

Answers

The secrets Dr Heidegger is hiding does the skeleton in Dr. Heidegger's closet symbolize in Nathaniel Hawthorne's story, "Dr. Heidegger's Experiment". Hence, option A is correct.

What are the symbols in Dr. Heidegger's experiment?

The doctor's optimism for a positive transformation in human nature and his desire to experience youth again are represented by the vase. Those dreams are lost as the vase cracks and falls. The vase and the rose are both images that contribute significantly to Hawthorne's achievement in a piece like "Dr. Heidegger's Experiment."

Heidegger has a book of magic, a talking bust, a skeleton in his closet, a movable portrait, and a mirror that contains the images of all of his deceased patients.

A painting of the young woman who the doctor was going to marry many years ago hung on another wall. She drank one of the doctor's medications, but she passed on the evening before their wedding.

Thus, option A is correct.

Book 12 in the odyssey I need the summary , please don't copy off the internet my teacher knows when it is off the internet so in your own words please.

Answers

The odyssey is one of my favorite books. So I definitely got you on this one. I’ll put it into my own words. But if you want to be even more sure I’d rewrite it in a way your teacher will think it’s you.

In book 12 of the Odyssey, they start off with Circe tells Odysseus about the sirens, how they lure boatmen into the sea and based off of their songs they sing. She goes on to tell him to use beeswax in their ears so they don’t die. A great gesture from a lady who turned his crew into pig and I right. But then she tells him about the two monsters they’ll encounter on their sail. Circe explained to him about how he should choose the side of the Scylla instead of Charybdis. Where you can always lose a handful of men instead of losing the whole ship. The day comes and they go on their sail, Odysseus decided he didn’t want to tell his crew about the monsters or the sirens so they didn’t worry. But Odysseus does what Circe says, and just loses 6 men. They finally arrived at the island, and all men were hungry and tired. Odysseus told them and they agreed to not eat the cattle. But, they became trapped on the island for a month, and they crewmen betrayed Odysseus and ate the cattle. Helios (the sun god) was extremely angry over the fact they killed some of the cattle. The men decided to continue to eat the cattle which enraged Helios. So he decided to ask the gods to do something about it. But the whole time they were on the island. Nothing happened. The crewmen finally left the island, and then a huge storm came apon them. Which then pushed their boat along to the monster who created whirlpools. Odysseus had just barely saved himself.

So it’s long but I that’s my summary, if you want any more summaries on the book for the class definitely ask me and I’ll gladly help. This is one of my favorite books :)

Just when we thought we had verbs figured out, we’re brought face-to-face with a new animal: non-finite verbs. These words look similar to verbs we’ve already been talking about, but they act quite different from those other verbs.

By definition, a non-finite verb cannot serve as the main verb in an independent clause. In practical terms, this means that they don’t serve as the action of a sentence. They also don’t have a tense. While the sentence around them may be past, present, or future tense, the non-finite verbs themselves are neutral. There are three types of non-finite verbs: gerunds, participles, and infinitives.

Gerunds

Gerunds all end in -ing: skiing, reading, dancing, singing, etc. Gerunds act like nouns and can serve as subjects or objects of sentences. They can be created using active or helping verbs:

I like swimming.

Being loved can make someone feel safe.

Do you fancy going out?

Having read the book once before makes me more prepared.

Often the “doer” of the gerund is clearly signaled:

We enjoyed singing yesterday (we ourselves sang)

Tomás likes eating apricots (Tomás himself eats apricots)

However, sometimes the “doer” must be overtly specified, typically in a position immediately before the non-finite verb:

We enjoyed their singing.

We were delighted at Bianca being awarded the prize.

PRACTICE

Identify the gerunds and their roles in the following sentences:

Sam was really bad at gardening.

Studying is one of Jazz’s favorite things to do.

Show Answer

Participles

A participle is a form of a verb that is used in a sentence to modify a noun, noun phrase, verb, or verb phrase, and then plays a role similar to an adjective or adverb. It is one of the types of nonfinite verb forms.

The two types of participle in English are traditionally called the present participle (forms such as writing, singing and raising) and the past participle (forms such as written, sung and raised).

The Present Participle

Even though they look exactly the same, gerunds and present participles do different things. As we just learned, the gerund acts as a noun: e.g., “I like sleeping“; “Sleeping is not allowed.” Present participles, on the other hand, act similarly to an adjective or adverb: e.g., “The sleeping girl over there is my sister”; “Breathing heavily, she finished the race in first place.”

The present participle, or participial phrases (clauses) formed from it, are used as follows:

as an adjective phrase modifying a noun phrase: The man sitting over there is my uncle.

adverbially, the subject being understood to be the same as that of the main clause: Looking at the plans, I gradually came to see where the problem lay. He shot the man, killing him.

more generally as a clause or sentence modifier: Broadly speaking, the project was successful.

The present participle can also be used with the helping verb to be to form a type of present tense: Marta was sleeping. (We’ll discuss this further in Text: Complex Verb Tenses.) This is something we learned a little bit about in helping verbs and tense.

The Past Participle

Past participles often look very similar to the simple past tense of a verb: finished, danced, etc. However, some verbs have different forms. Reference lists will be your best help in finding the correct past participle. Here is one such list of participles. Here’s a short list of some of the most common irregular past participles you’ll use:

Verb Simple Past Past Participle

to be was/were been

to become became become

to do did done

to go went gone

to know knew know

to see saw seen

to speak spoke spoken

to take took taken

to write wrote written

Past participles are used in a couple of different ways:

as an adjective phrase: The chicken eaten by the children was contaminated.

adverbially: Seen from this perspective, the problem presents no easy solution.

in a nominative absolute construction, with a subject: The task finished, we returned home.

The past participle can also be used with the helping verb to have to form a type of past tense (which we’ll talk about in Text: Complex Verb Tenses): The chicken has eaten. It is also used to form the passive voice: Tianna was voted as most likely to succeed. When the passive voice is used following a relative pronoun (like that or which) we sometimes leave out parts of the phrase:

He had three things that were taken away from him

He had three things taken away from him

In the second sentence, we removed the words that were. However, we still use the past participle taken. The removal of these words is called elision. Elision is used with a lot of different constructions in English; we use it shorten sentences when things are understood. However, we can only use elision in certain situations, so be careful when removing words! (We’ll discuss this further in Text: Using the Passive Voice.)

1) The components of a smart city (a component = un/une composant(e))
2) The problems smart cities tackle (to tackle a problem = traiter un problème)
3) The goal of city officials (a city official = un responsable municipal)
4) The problem of smart cities
Then give your opinion about smart cities: pros and cons (les “pour" et les "contre")

Answers

I don’t understand this?

Answer:

A smart city is a framework, predominantly composed of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT), to develop, deploy, and promote sustainable development practices to address growing urbanization challenges.

A big part of this ICT framework is essentially an intelligent network of connected objects and machines that transmit data using wireless technology and the cloud.

Cloud-based IoT applications receive, analyze, and manage data in real-time to help municipalities, enterprises, and citizens make better decisions that improve quality of life.

Citizens engage with smart city ecosystems in various ways using smartphones and mobile devices and connected cars and homes. Pairing devices and data with a city’s physical infrastructure and services can cut costs and improve sustainability.

Communities can improve energy distribution, streamline trash collection, decrease traffic congestion, and even improve air quality with help from the IoT.For instance,

Connected traffic lights receive data from sensors and cars adjusting light cadence and timing to respond to real-time traffic, reducing road congestion.

Connected cars can communicate with parking meters and electric vehicle (EV)charging docks and direct drivers to the nearest available spot.

Smart garbage cans automatically send data to waste management companies and schedule pick-up as needed versus on a pre-planned schedule.

And citizens’ smartphone becomes their mobile driver’s license and ID card with digital credentials, which speeds and simplifies access to the city and local government services.

Together, these smart city technologies are optimizing infrastructure, mobility, public services, and utilities.Urbanization is a non-ending phenomenon.

Today, 54% of people worldwide live in cities, a proportion that’s expected to reach 66% by 2050.

Combined with the overall population growth, urbanization will add another 2.5 billion people to cities over the next three decades.

Environmental, social, and economic sustainability is a must to keep pace with this rapid expansion that is taxing our cities’ resources.

One hundred ninety-three countries have agreed upon the agenda of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), in September 2015 at the United Nations.

But we all know how centralized decisions and actions can take time, and the clock is ticking.

The good news?

Citizens and local authorities are certainly more agile to launch swift initiatives, and smart city technology is paramount to success and meeting these goals.

The correct answer to this open question is the following.

Unfortunately, you forgot to include the name of the story or the name of the book.

How do we know what are you talking about?

We had to do some deep research in order to help you and can comment on the following.

In the description of the setting in lines 24-26, what the special wind suggests about the locations of the two armies is that the sound of the wind -or at least is why the boy thinks it is- is, in reality, the sound of the armies that are marching and getting closer. The fact that the boy can hear the sounds so close means the armies' camps are very close to each other.

And regarding the mood, the above-mentioned descriptions help to create a mood of tension, even anxiety for the things that are about to happen in the story.

We are talking about the story of "The Drummer Boy of Shiloh." The story of John Lincoln Clem (1851-1937), who was the drummer boy during the American Civil War for the Union Army.

As you read the excerpt below, think about how the author has organized or structured the information.

Think of a bottle of soda pop. Before it is opened, there is no sign of bubbles. As soon as the bottle is opened, though, bubbles suddenly appear. In fact, they can foam all over the place. That is because there is a gas, carbon dioxide, dissolved inside the liquid soda. The soda in the closed bottle is under pressure. When a liquid is under pressure, it can dissolve more gas than when it is not under pressure. As soon as you open a bottle, there is less pressure inside it, and it cannot dissolve as much gas. That makes gas bubbles form as the gas tries to expand.
