Which part of this story from Aesop's Fables best demonstrates the rising action of the story?
The Town Mouse and the Country Mouse
Now you must know that a Town Mouse once upon a time went on a visit to his cousin in the country. He was rough and ready, this cousin, but he loved his town friend and made him heartily welcome. Beans and bacon, cheese and bread, were all he had to offer, but he offered them freely. The Town Mouse rather turned up his long nose at this country fare, and said: "I cannot understand, Cousin, how you can put up with such poor food as this, but of course you cannot expect anything better in the country; come you with me and I will show you how to live. When you have been in town a week you will wonder how you could ever have stood a country life." No sooner said than done: the two mice set off for the town and arrived at the Town Mouse's residence late at night. "You will want some refreshment after our long journey," said the polite Town Mouse, and took his friend into the grand dining-room. There they found the remains of a fine feast, and soon the two mice were eating up jellies and cakes and all that was nice. Suddenly they heard growling and barking. "What is that?" said the Country Mouse. "It is only the dogs of the house," answered the other. "Only!" said the Country Mouse. "I do not like that music at my dinner." Just at that moment the door flew open, in came two huge mastiffs, and the two mice had to scamper down and run off. "Good-bye, Cousin," said the Country Mouse, "What! going so soon?" said the other. "Yes," he replied;
"Better beans and bacon in peace than cakes and ale in fear."

Explanation: What Is Rising Action? The rising action is the second of six essential plot elements, which comes right after the opening of a story, otherwise known as the exposition. It is usually made up of a series of events that lay down breadcrumbs, ask questions, and set roadblocks and conflicts that must be overcome.

Use your prior knowledge to infer what will happen next?
a.
I will have to get a ride to the concert.
c.
I will be late for school.
b.
I will miss the bus.
d.
none of the above

Answers

Answer:

You will be late for school

unless you are doing virtual school then you might go to a concert of none of the above

Answer:

c. I will be late for school.

Explanation:

So we know that your alarm clock did not go off, leading to the result of the bus arriving one hour ago without you knowing, we need to find the most reasonable spot for what could happen next.

A. states that you will have to get a ride to the concert - This is wrong because the situation never mentions a concert, though it could be possible, this is not reasonable due to lack of information about the said concert.

B. states that you will miss the bus - This is incorrect because you have already missed the bus, therefore this action has already happened and is in the past.

C. states that you will be late for school - This is correct because it is the most reasonable event to happen, usually kids get to school by bus, it would make sense for you to be late to school if you don't reach the bus in time.

D. states none of the above - This is obviously incorrect, we have found c already.

Which sentence is written correctly?

1. Once in awhile we watch TV till late at night.

2. I think we should get together every once in a while.

3. I want to go to the beach for awhile.

A. 1

B. 2

C. 3

Answers

Answer:

B. 2.

Explanation:

Among the three sentences given, the one similarity between them will be the use of the word "awhile" or "a while". The main difference between the two is that "awhile" is an adverb while the other is a noun, both about "a period of time".

So, the correct use of the word in a sentence is sentence 2. Here, the word "a while" is used to talk of a specific time period. The words "awhile" used in the other two sentences should be written as "a while" if they are to be correct.

Thus, the correct answer is option B.

Less Phones, More Talk

In our contemporary society, far too many people are more interested in whatever is happening on their phones than the people around them. Visit any restaurant, and you will notice people mindlessly staring at their personal devices rather than interacting with those around them. This habit is hurting relationships and shortening attention spans.

The best way to build a relationship is through one-on-one interaction, and the habit of constantly checking your phone unfortunately gets in the way of that. When you are on the phone during dinner with a friend, you are sending the message that he or she is not that important to you. You may still be able to pay attention to what your friend is saying, but you are communicating a message of disrespect by looking at your phone and not making eye contact. Without eye contact, it is nearly impossible to be fully engaged in the conversation. When your eyes are fixed on your phone, your companion may not share as much information with you or worse yet, he or she may not want to spend time with you in the future.

Many people think that they have to check their phones and be connected at all times. However, the reality is that very few things are so important that they need to be followed at all times. The latest posts on social media will not simply go away if you have not checked them in the past five minutes. In the event that you are awaiting an important phone call or text, you can simply tell your dinner partner "excuse me" and not that you have to check something on your phone. You would not walk away while someone was talking without saying anything, and the same holds true for when you check your phone. Entering the world of your phone is essentially walking away because you are no longer fully present and aware of what the other person is saying.

A Tortoise, seeing an Eagle in flight, wanted much to fly like him. So she asked him if he would not teach her to fly.
He told her that it was impossible; that Tortoises could not fly. All the more did she urge him; so at last the Eagle seized her in his claws, bore her to a great height, and then, letting her go, bade her fly.
She fell like a stone to the earth, and the blow knocked the breath out of her body.

Looking at how the Tortoise responds to the challenge of being told she cannot fly, what is the theme of the text?

a) If you refuse to take advice from someone who knows more than you, then you might get hurt.

Who was Samuel Johnson?

Samuel Johnson, also known as Dr. Johnson, was an English author who is remembered for his work as a lexicographer, dramatist, philosopher, moralist, reviewer, biographer, and poet.

He is referred to as "arguably the most renowned master of literature in English history" by the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography.

A Lexicon of the English Language is among Johnson's best-known creations. The dictionaries of the time were lacking, so in June 1746, a collection of London booksellers engaged Johnson to create one.

Therefore, in both excerpts, the word endeavor means to make an effort or attempt to try.
