[Lights up at a large home improvement store. Dad and Will are loading up on wood, nails, paint, and more. ]

DAD: Plywood, two-by-fours, paint, shingles for the roof, carpeting. ...What else do we need?

WILL: We need stuff to make it weatherproof, and some kind of insulation. And landscaping material.

DAD: Will, there’s no need to landscape. No one’s going to see it behind the house.

WILL: They’ll see it, Dad. It’s their new home—their first home—and it should look good when they get here. They need bushes and grass just like everyone else—more than everyone else. This has to be perfect or they won’t be allowed to live with us.

DAD: Okay, grass and bushes, but later. We have to build this thing first. [He shakes his head in disbelief, but smiles. ]I knew that fostering would be hard work, but this is a ton of effort. Who knew that a couple of little ones would need so much room?

WILL: They can be in the family room with us most of the time, but they need their own space, too. Just like me and Davis. Hey—we need paintbrushes. Davis destroyed ours when he made that volcano for school. [They exit left, happily, as the lights go down. ]

Scene 2
[Lights up in a backyard. The building supplies now litter the stage: sawhorses, electric tools, hammers, and an overflowing toolbox. Will and Dad have built a number of large, flat, square shapes out of plywood. The shapes are scattered about in disarray. ]

WILL: But you said you wanted pliers, Dad—

DAD: Long-nosed pliers, Will. I need to hold this little pin, and I can’t get my fingers in the—

WILL: Here they are—but you could use a screwdriver—

DAD: Got it! Okay, so why don’t we put the floor here? We have to put that in place before we build the walls.

[They carry and then set down a flat piece that has short legs on each corner, making a platform. ]

DAD: Perfect. Now for the walls.

WILL: Are you sure we’re doing this right?

DAD: Pretty sure. [Dad drags another heavy, flat piece of plywood, grunting as he moves it. ]Once we attach the walls, all we have to do is the roof. Pshew. Will—help me with this. You have to hold it upright.

[Dad works to secure the wall. ]

DAD: Great! Only three more and a roof left to go. We have to hustle, though. The little ones are coming home in only a few hours. Will, this is a lot of responsibility, being a foster family. You and your brother will have to step up to the plate and help take care of these little guys. Are you sure you and Davis are ready for this?

WILL: Of course. It was our idea, Dad, remember? We’ll help feed them and bathe them and teach them everything. It’ll be fine .

DAD: Okay. Hand me a new drill bit—I broke the last one in this first wall. No, not those, the thinner ones. No, not those. ...

[They continue to struggle with the building as the lights go down. ]

Scene 3
[Lights up as Dad and Will stand center stage, close together to block the sight of their finished project. Will yells and waves to Mom and Davis offstage right. ]

WILL: We’re back here!

OF all the pupils at the knight school Gawaine le Cur-Hardy was among the least promising. He was tall and sturdy, but his instructors soon discovered that he lacked spirit. He would hide in the woods when the jousting class was called, although his companions and members of the faculty sought to appeal to his better nature by shouting to him to come out and break his neck like a man. Even when they told him that the lances were padded, the horses no more than ponies and the field unusually soft for late autumn, Gawaine refused to grow enthusiastic. The Headmaster and the Assistant Professor of Pleasaunce were discussing the case one spring afternoon and the Assistant Professor could see no remedy but expulsion.
