More people began looking at the story of Columbus from the point of view of the native people. This version points out that Columbus’s main goal was finding and taking resources for Spain. These resources included the people Columbus brought back to Spain as slaves. His sailors stole from, kidnapped, and murdered native people. Additionally, the Europeans brought diseases with them. These diseases killed many people. They had no defense against the illnesses. Columbus may have opened the Americas to colonization. He also destroyed many of the indigenous cultures in the process.

Many native people, however, associate Columbus with destroying their cultures. They have protested Columbus Day for decades. Their voices have turned into a movement to replace Columbus Day with Indigenous Peoples Day. In 1990, South Dakota became the first state to rename the day. Other states have followed. Cities and towns across the country have also renamed Columbus Day. Indigenous Peoples Day honors the native people who were the first inhabitants of the Americas instead of honoring the man who led to their destruction.
