What effects did U.S. foreign policy have on Latin America?

Answers

Answer 1

Explanation:

U.S. foreign policy toward Latin America in the 19th century initially focused on excluding or limiting the military and economic influence of European powers, territorial expansion, and encouraging American commerce. These objectives were expressed in the No Transfer Principle (1811) and the Monroe Doctrine (1823). American policy was unilateralist (not isolationist); it gradually became more aggressive and interventionist as the idea of Manifest Destiny contributed to wars and military conflicts against indigenous peoples, France, Britain, Spain, and Mexico in the Western Hemisphere. Expansionist sentiments and U.S. domestic politics inspired annexationist impulses and filibuster expeditions to Mexico, Cuba, and parts of Central America. Civil war in the United States put a temporary halt to interventionism and imperial dreams in Latin America. From the 1870s until the end of the century, U.S. policy intensified efforts to establish political and military hegemony in the Western Hemisphere, including periodic naval interventions in the Caribbean and Central America, reaching even to Brazil in the 1890s. By the end of the century Secretary of State Richard Olney added the Olney Corollary to the Monroe Doctrine (“Today the United States is practically sovereign on this continent and its fiat is law upon the subjects to which it confines its interposition . . .”), and President Theodore Roosevelt contributed his own corollary in 1904 (“in the Western Hemisphere the adherence of the United States to the Monroe Doctrine may force the United States, however reluctantly, in flagrant cases of wrongdoing or impotence, to exercise an international police power”). American policy toward Latin America, at the turn of the century, explicitly justified unilateral intervention, military occupation, and transformation of sovereign states into political and economic protectorates in order to defend U.S. economic interests and an expanding concept of national security.

Answer 2

Answer: U.S. foreign policy toward Latin America in the 19th century initially focused on excluding or limiting the military and economic influence of European powers, territorial expansion, and encouraging American commerce. These objectives were expressed in the No Transfer Principle (1811) and the Monroe Doctrine (1823).

Explanation: Accountability and alliance must go hand in hand for all issues, not just human rights. With this balanced nature in mind, the United States should improve its foreign policy toward Latin America by pursuing multilateral compliance strengthened by institutional networks that promote hemispheric growth and cooperation.

List at least 2 weaknesses of the Articles of Confederation.

Answers

Answer:

The major downfall of the Articles of Confederation was simply weakness. The federal government, under the Articles, was too weak to enforce their laws and therefore had no power. The Continental Congress had borrowed money to fight the Revolutionary War and could not repay their debts.

The Articles of Confederation had several weaknesses. Three notable weaknesses include the national government's lack of power to tax, the absence of national army or navy and the ability of each state to issue their own paper money.

What options did women have in education and the workforce during the 1800s? Mark each statement as true or false. Young women were banned from working in factories. Unmarried women had more job opportunities outside the home than married women. Educated women often became doctors or lawyers. Many educated women became schoolteachers.

Answers

Answer:

Young women were banned from working in factories. - False

Unmarried women had more job opportunities outside the home than married women. - True

Educated women often became doctors or lawyers. - False

Many educated women became schoolteachers. - False

Explanation:

In 1800 women did not have many opportunities to work outside the home. This was because it was the duty of women to take care of their children, cleaning the house and the husband. In that case, job openings for married women were even smaller. Young and single women, on the other hand, could occupy low-paid positions such as washerwomen, seamstresses, factory workers, cooks, rural workers, among others.

At that time, women also did not receive quality education, so they did not learn professions as lawyers or doctors. Women who had some kind of education, could be a chaperone, or, be a housekeeper, who would be responsible for running a home, including the education of children.
