Practice Sight-Reading
When it comes to learning and developing a new skill, giving yourself plenty of opportunities to practice, practice, practice this new skill is crucial to mastering it! Learning how to sing a new piece of music at sight is the perfect example of a skill that takes lots of practice to master. For this lab, you will have the opportunity to do just that—practice your ability to sing a new piece of music using your sight-reading skills!

Explore the following website (click on the red button on the site that says Try It for Free):

www.sightreadingfactory.com

You will be asked to select your instrument and you will select, you guessed it—your voice!

After selecting Voice and the vocal part you want (soprano, alto, tenor, bass, choir), you will have a variety of additional choices to make—things like selecting a level, a time signature, and key signature. You have the freedom to choose whatever specifications you want within this voice section.

Practice three times, selecting different Voice specifications each time. Screenshot the musical piece you are given to practice each time you do the activity.

Once you have completed the practice activity three times, you will write a brief reflection on the entire experience. Your reflection should be no longer than one page typed and should explore the following items:

Briefly summarize the practice activity (the steps you took, what you were asked to do, how you were able to use what you learned in the unit and apply it to the activity, etc.).
Identify the specific choices that you made for each round of practice that you did.
How did these choices change the experience?
Which choices made the activity easier? Which choices made the activity more difficult?
What aspects of this activity did you find challenging? Why?
Did you find this practice activity to be helpful? Why or why not?
Include your three screenshots with your reflection.
For information on how you will be graded, please refer to the rubric below.

Answer 1

Answer:

What is the practice activity you completed on the website sightreadingfactory.com?

For this lab, I completed a practice activity on the website sightreadingfactory.com. The practice activity was designed to help me improve my ability to sight-read music. To start, I selected Voice and the vocal part I wanted to practice (in my case, soprano). Then, I was asked to select a level, time signature, and key signature. I had the freedom to choose whatever specifications I wanted within this voice section. I completed this activity three times, selecting different voice specifications each time.

What specific choices did you make for each round of practice that you did, and how did these choices change the experience?

For my first practice round, I chose a level one, a 4/4 time signature, and a C major key signature. For my second practice round, I chose a level two, a 6/8 time signature, and a G major key signature. For my third practice round, I chose a level three, a 3/4 time signature, and a D minor key signature. These choices changed the experience as the music pieces I was given to sight-read were all different in rhythm and tonality. The different levels, time signatures, and key signatures required me to use different sight-reading skills for each practice round.

Which choices made the activity easier? Which choices made the activity more difficult?

Choosing a lower level made the activity easier as the music pieces were simpler and required less complex sight-reading skills. Choosing a higher level made the activity more difficult as the music pieces were more complex and required advanced sight-reading skills. The time signature and key signature choices also impacted the difficulty level of the activity. For example, choosing a time signature that I was familiar with made it easier for me to sight-read the music piece. Conversely, choosing a key signature that I was not familiar with made the activity more challenging.

What aspects of this activity did you find challenging? Why?

One aspect of this activity that I found challenging was sight-reading music pieces with complex rhythms. The rhythm of the music piece would change frequently, and it was challenging to keep up with the changes while singing. Additionally, sight-reading music pieces with key signatures that I was not familiar with was also challenging. I had to take extra time to analyze the key signature and adjust my sight-reading accordingly.

Did you find this practice activity to be helpful? Why or why not?

Yes, I found this practice activity to be helpful. It gave me the opportunity to practice and improve my sight-reading skills. I was able to apply what I learned in the unit and use it to sight-read music pieces with different time and key signatures. The different levels of difficulty also challenged me to improve my sight-reading abilities. Overall, this practice activity was a great way to improve my musical skills.

Both third person and first person narrative modes have their restrictions. Third person presents events from a point of view outside the story; first person shows them from a single character's viewpoint, one who often has incomplete information.
