Water contamination occurs when pollutants contaminate water sources and render the water unfit for use in drinking, cooking, cleaning, swimming, and other activities. Chemicals, garbage, bacteria, and parasites are examples of pollutants. Water is eventually contaminated by all types of pollution.
Bacteria that cause diarrhea, cholera, dysentery, typhoid, hepatitis A, and polio can be found in contaminated water. The UN estimates that each year, 297,000 children under the age of five pass away from illnesses brought on by poor hygiene, sanitary conditions, or contaminated water. From farms, factories, and towns, streams and rivers transport pollutants like chemicals, fertilizers, and heavy metals into our bays and estuaries, where they are then transported out to sea. The wind also brings in marine waste, particularly plastic, as does water from storm drains and sewage systems. The Industrial Revolution of the middle of the 19th century brought forth remarkable technological advancements as well as new sources of air and water pollution.
