A Natural disaster is an unforeseen occurrence of an event that causes harm to society. There are many Natural disasters that damage the environment and the people living in it. Some of them are earthquakes, cyclones, floods, Tsunami, landslides, volcanic eruptions, and avalanches. Spatial extent measures the degree or severity of the disaster.

An earthquake is the shaking or vibrating of the earth. An earthquake can range in size. As a result, some are so weak that they go unnoticed. But some are so strong that they can destroy a whole city. Earthquakes can cause disruption of the ground. Moreover, they can cause landslides, avalanches, and Tsunamis. However, the center of an earthquake falls mostly offshore.

Landslides are the moving of big boulders of rocks or debris down a slope. As a result, landslides occur in mountains and hilly areas. Moreover, landslides can cause destruction to man-made things in many ways.  Gravitational pull, volcanic eruptions, and earthquakes can cause landslides. Moreover, soil erosion due to deforestation is also a cause of landslides.

Avalanches are like landslides. But instead of rocks thousands of tons of snow falls down the slope. Moreover, this causes extreme damage to anything that comes in its way. People who live in snowy mountains always have fear of it. Avalanches take place when there is a large accumulation of snow on the mountains. Moreover, they can also occur from earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. Furthermore, the chances of surviving an avalanche are very less. This is because people die of hypothermia in it.  

A Tsunami is the result of very high waves in oceans and seas. Moreover, the displacement of the ground causes these high waves. A tsunami can cause floods if it occurs near shores. A Tsunami can consist of multiple waves. Moreover, these waves have a high current. Therefore they can reach coastlines within minutes. The main threat of a tsunami is that it cannot be outrun. A Tsunami is unlike normal eaves that occur due to the wind. But Tsunami is waves that occur by ground displacement. Thus earthquakes are the main causes of Tsunamis.

Good morning everyone presents here. I am going to express my views on 'Natural Disasters'. Petra Nemcova has very wisely said, “We cannot stop natural disasters but we can arm ourselves with knowledge: so many lives wouldn't have to be lost if there was enough disaster preparedness.” It is quite true life is uncertain and unpredictable only for those who don’t prepare themselves for its uncertainties. Many people lose their lives on account of large-scale natural disasters and catastrophes. This large-scale loss of property and human life could be prevented if proper preventive measures are taken. Usually,  human beings become aware and proactive only after the tragedy strikes its deadly blow!    

Natural disasters such as floods, hurricanes, earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, tsunamis, and tornadoes can be tackled and handled quite safely if proper warning and safety measures are taken well in advance. It has been observed that these disasters wreaked quite a havoc when these disasters took the victims by surprise. Wherever there was a warning, and preparedness, there was less destruction and loss.

  With all the technological advancement, it is possible now to predict natural disasters well in advance. The weather satellites orbiting the earth, the early warning systems installed at key locations are already doing wonders in keeping millions of people safe.

The need of the hour is Government and people along with the prediction mechanism further must work more proactively to be prepared for natural disasters. It is not the infrastructure and means we lack; we lack proper attitude to the disasters. So, we must set our attitude right.
