Letter to a Citizen of Kentucky, an excerpt
Executive Mansion, Washington,
April 4, 1864.
A. G. Hodges, Esq., Frankfort, Ky.
My Dear Sir:
You ask me to put in writing the substance of what I verbally stated the other day, in your presence, to Governor Bramlette and Senator Dixon. It was about as follows:
I am naturally anti-slavery. If slavery is not wrong nothing is wrong. I cannot remember when I did not so think and feel; and yet I have never understood that the Presidency conferred upon me an unrestricted right to act officially in this judgment and feeling. It was in the oath I took that I would to the best of my ability preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States. I could not take the office without taking the oath. Nor was it in my view that I might take the oath to get power, and break the oath in using the power.
I understood, too, that in ordinary civil administration this oath even forbade me to practically indulge my primary abstract judgment on the moral question of slavery. I had publicly declared this many times and in many ways; and I aver that, to this day I have done no official act in mere deference to my abstract judgment and feeling on slavery. I did understand, however, that my oath to preserve the Constitution to the best of my ability imposed upon me the duty of preserving, by every indispensable means, that government, that nation, of which that Constitution was the organic law. Was it possible to lose the nation, and yet preserve the Constitution?
By general law, life and limb must be protected; yet often a limb must be amputated to save a life, but a life is never wisely given to save a limb. I felt that measures, otherwise unconstitutional, might become lawful by becoming indispensable to the preservation of the Constitution through the preservation of the nation. Right or wrong, I assumed this ground, and now avow it. I could not feel that to the best of my ability I had even tried to preserve the Constitution, if, to save slavery, or any minor matter, I should permit the wreck of government, country, and Constitution altogether.
When, early in the war, General Fremont attempted military emancipation, I forbade it, because I did not then think it an indispensable necessity. When, a little later, General Cameron, then Secretary of War, suggested the arming of the blacks, I objected, because I did not yet think it an indispensable necessity. When, still later, General Hunter attempted military emancipation, I forbade it, because I did not yet think the indispensable necessity had come. When, in March and May and July, 1862, I made earnest and successive appeals to the Border States to favor compensated emancipation, I believed the indispensable necessity for military emancipation and arming the blacks would come, unless averted by that measure. They declined the proposition; and I was, in my best judgment, driven to the alternative of either surrendering the Union, and with it the Constitution, or of laying strong hand upon the colored element. I chose the latter. In choosing it, I hoped for greater gain than loss; but of this I was not entirely confident...
Yours truly,
A. Lincoln

Answer:
The details from the text that support the idea that London portrays Yukon as a harsh, unforgiving setting are:
A. London sets the scene by describing it as "exceedingly cold and gray."
B. London reveals, through the dog's instincts, that the temperature is seventy-five below zero.
C. London explains that there is no sign of the sun, even though it is nine o'clock.
Explanation:
Yukon, a mountainous territory in Canada, is used as the setting for the tragic short story "To Build a Fire" by American author Jack London. London portrays Yukon as an inhospitable environment - at least for those who have no respect and reverence for Nature's power. The details that help us understand how harsh the Yukon territory is are:
1. It is "exceedingly cold and gray" - We know human beings need heat to be able to survive. We also tend to associate the color green with life, while gray seems barren.
2. The temperature is seventy-five below zero. - Again, such an extreme temperature does not reassure us of the possibility of survival.
3. Even though it is nine o'clock, there is no sign of the sun. - Without the heat the sun provides, we can only imagine how insufferably cold Yukon is, as well as scary.

why we should have fewer children:
The first is the considerable economic pressure on a young family, the cost of living, buying a house ... creates great considerations with the decision to have a baby. In particular, the costs of preparing and raising children are increasing, from food, clothing, school, medical and other expenses. Meanwhile, the income is sometimes volatile or less increased. Modern society can not rely on the idea of "we give birth to elephants and give birth to grass", we must have a foundation to think about having many children. Second, the confusion in parenting in the face of many modern family education issues is also a cause for consideration of having more birth, whether to be able to behave and teach children well or not. Thirdly, young couples have a higher awareness of how to give birth and raise good children. The birth must ensure the quality of their material and spiritual life, so they choose the safe method. Little kids for better care. It is also about implementing family planning. Another reason for the lack of childbirth is that some women identify the need to balance family life and other values such as career, personal life, health and beauty, so having fewer children can. is the right choice for them. Because of giving birth, women will have to sacrifice time and health to ensure their favor.
Read the excerpt from "The Lottery."
The people separated good-humoredly to let her through: two or three people said, in voices just loud enough to be heard across the crowd, "Here comes your Missus, Hutchinson," and "Bill, she made it after all." Mrs. Hutchinson reached her husband, and Mr. Summers, who had been waiting, said cheerfully, "Thought we were going to have to get on without you, Tessie." Mrs. Hutchinson said grinning, "Wouldn't have me leave m'dishes in the sink, now, would you, Joe?" and soft laughter ran through the crowd as the people stirred back into position after Mrs. Hutchinson's arrival.
Which line from the excerpt contains irony?
“Bill, she made it after all.”
“Thought we were going to have to get on without you, Tessie.”
“Wouldn’t have me leave m’dishes in the sink, now, would you, Joe?”
“Here comes your Missus, Hutchinson.”
Answer:
its answer B “Thought we were going to have to get on without you, Tessie.”
The line that contains irony in the excerpt is "Thought we were going to have to get on without you, Tessie.” (option B)
Why is option B ironical? In "The Lottery," a whole village takes part in a lottery in which the prize is quite awful. Rather than receiving money, for example, those whose names are drawn are stoned to death by the rest of the inhabitants.
That is what makes the line in option B ironical. Tessie arrives late for the lottery, but she is the one whose name is picked in the end. If she hadn't come to the event, things would actually have been better for her.

"At a time like this, scorching irony, not convincing argument, is needed. Oh! had I the ability, and could I reach the nation's ear, I would today pour out a fiery stream of biting ridicule, blasting reproach, withering sarcasm, and stern rebuke. For it is not light that is needed, but fire; it is not the gentle shower, but thunder. We need the storm, the whirlwind, and the earthquake. The feeling of the nation must be quickened; the conscience of the nation must be roused; the propriety of the nation must be startled; the hypocrisy of the nation must be exposed; and its crimes against God and man must be denounced."

Do you think Prometheus was right to disobey Jupiter and give fire to men? Why or why not?
Answer:
Zeus was angry at Prometheus for three things: being tricked on scarifices, stealing fire for man, and for refusing to tell Zeus which of Zeus's children would dethrone him. ... Zeus gave Prometheus two ways out of this torment. He could tell Zeus who the mother of the child that would dethrone him was.
Why does Jupiter refuse to give humans fire? Jupiter refuses to give mankind fire because he is afraid of one day mankind becoming stronger and wiser than the gods. Jupiter's punishment was making the humans ten times more miserable then they were before by giving them cares and diseases.
So in my opinion, i'd say Prometheus was wrong to give man fire.
