Theme for English B
BY LANGSTON HUGHES
The instructor said,

Go home and write
a page tonight.
And let that page come out of you—
Then, it will be true.

I wonder if it’s that simple?
I am twenty-two, colored, born in Winston-Salem.
I went to school there, then Durham, then here
to this college on the hill above Harlem.
I am the only colored student in my class.
The steps from the hill lead down into Harlem,
through a park, then I cross St. Nicholas,
Eighth Avenue, Seventh, and I come to the Y,
the Harlem Branch Y, where I take the elevator
up to my room, sit down, and write this page:

It’s not easy to know what is true for you or me
at twenty-two, my age. But I guess I’m what
I feel and see and hear, Harlem, I hear you.
hear you, hear me—we two—you, me, talk on this page.
(I hear New York, too.) Me—who?

Well, I like to eat, sleep, drink, and be in love.
I like to work, read, learn, and understand life.
I like a pipe for a Christmas present,
or records—Bessie, bop, or Bach.
I guess being colored doesn’t make me not like
the same things other folks like who are other races.
So will my page be colored that I write?
Being me, it will not be white.
But it will be
a part of you, instructor.
You are white—
yet a part of me, as I am a part of you.
That’s American.
Sometimes perhaps you don’t want to be a part of me.
Nor do I often want to be a part of you.
But we are, that’s true!
As I learn from you,
I guess you learn from me—
although you’re older—and white—
and somewhat more free.

Answer:

Theme for English B”, As a Representative of Self: This poem is about the speaker’s attitude, interests, and background. The professor asks the narrator to write a page about himself. The speaker begins his assignment, providing some necessary autobiographical details because he wants true. After talking about his age, academic history and identity, he unveils a crucial reality that he is the only colored student in his class. He believes people belonging to different casts, color and identities share common interests. Also, he writes that his assignment will not fully represent him. Willingly or unwillingly, they both influence each other. In this way, all of his doubts, questions, and hesitations become his page for English B.

Major Themes in “Theme for English B”: Identity, creativity, and racism are major themes of this poem. Right from the beginning, the black speaker struggles to come up to the expectations of his white professor. Although there is a divide between the speaker and his professor, yet he writes about his experiences and likes to present his true character in his assignment. At first, he is a bit nervous as he feels indifferent. However, he realizes that his likes and interests are similar to the people belonging to other races, which makes him confident. The speaker establishes a ground reality that America is a land of diversity and people influence each other regardless of their identities and skin color.

I saw my mother and said hello... but she replied "Where are you honey?". I hastily replied "I'm right here mom" but she still did not see me. I rushed to the bathroom and realized "I WAS INVISIBLE!" I was scared and nervous at first but then I realized.... "I don't have to go to school!!" I was very excited about that so I walked to the ice cream truck and got ice cream for free! I was thinking of what to do and realized "I can go to school and get all of the drama and secrets". That's when I saw the school bus taking people to school. But then again I was still in my pajamas... but nobody could see me I was invisible! I got on the bus and we got to school much faster than it normally takes. I had to remember  to be very quiet although I was invisible everyone could still hear me! I walked inside of my school and saw my best friends! I wanted to go say hello to them but instead just walked up and listened. They were talking about me! I heard one of them say "How should we arrange this" and then the other said "Hmm not sure but she is going to be so surprised" I started to think what if they are going to embarrass me in front of everyone or maybe something even worse! I started getting very nervous. I left school quickly and saw the time. School was almost over! I was wondering where all the time went but then remembered waking up and my friends not being there. I must have passed out from being so nervous! I went into my all of my classrooms and grabbed copies of the work so i could do my work and bring it in tomorrow. I went home and sat down. "Time to get this work done" I said to myself. I finished the first assignment but then I got distracted and next thing I know i'm sleeping and it is 7 in the morning. "Wow I fell asleep not finishing my work.. oh well" I shrugged. I jolted out of my seat "Maybe i'm not invisible!" I saw that I wasn't invisible! I did enjoy being invisible but I like being able to hang out with my friends and family more.

Golden Days

by Lizzie Lawson

There are days of summer sunshine,
Of warm and sunny weather,
When the hedge is full of hawthorn
And hills are glad with heather.

There are days of silent sadness,
Of frost, and snow, and rain,
When we fear that summer's gladness
Will never come again.

And now our songs are minor key,
And now in merry tune;
The windward side will change to lee,
And January to June.

Day and night the sun is shining,
Though he may hide his head;
Each cloud has a silver lining,
The flowers are asleep not dead.

Every day may have its playtime
Made bright by cheerful lays;
And life be one long Maytime,
A year of golden days.

Change this sentence to correctly include a restrictive phrase.

Group of answer choices

Because he hit the winning run, everyone crowded around the pitcher.

Everyone crowded around the pitcher, the ball player who hit the winning run.

Everyone crowded around the pitcher because he hit the winning run.

Everyone crowded around the ball player who hit the winning run.

Answers

Answer:

4

Explanation:

Everyone crowded around the ball player who hit the winning run

Answer:

The sentence that correctly includes a restrictive phrase is:

A. Everyone crowded around the ball player who hit the winning run.

Explanation:

A restrictive clause is a relative clause that provides essential information about a noun or noun phrase, limiting it. It can also be called defining relative clause. A restrictive clause is not set off by commas. The option that has information about the ball player that is not set off by commas is:

A. Everyone crowded around the ball player who hit the winning run.

When we have a restrictive clause removed, the sentence loses part of its meaning. If we remove "who hit the winning run," the rest of the sentence could be referring to any ball player. Therefore, this information is crucial because it specifies to which ball player we refer.

Note: Option B does not have commas as well, but it uses the conjunction "because", which does not form a restrictive clause.

A.In my opinion, the answer could possibly be A. I don't know the full context of this passage, but it could be that A is correct. However, the second paragraph especially gives me the hint that B is more accurate here.

B. In what I understood, this is correct. This is because it is clear that a battle was won here, as they seemed to have been struggling with getting approved to come to America. I think B is correct.

C.Although this may be true, and it may even be true specifically for the rest of this book, the short passage provided gives no negative connotation to it. It is a positive passage, and so the idea of life being difficult was never brought up. This is incorrect.

D. You have to be careful when looking at problems like this, because it's small words that indicate the correct/incorrect answer. The use of the phrase "promise of a great future" guarantees something that will not be true every time. So, this is incorrect.

adapted from To My Old Master

This letter was written by Jourdon Anderson, a person who escaped slavery during the Civil War. The letter is addressed to the man who once held him in slavery, Colonel P.H. Anderson. After the Civil War, Colonel Anderson’s plantation was failing, and he wrote Jourdon to ask him to return to work the fields and help him save his business.

Dayton, Ohio, August 7, 1865.

To my old Master, Colonel P. H. Anderson, Big Spring, Tennessee.

Sir:

I got your letter, and was glad to find that you had not forgotten Jourdon, and that you wanted me to come back and live with you again, promising to do better for me than anybody else can. I have often felt uneasy about you. Although you shot at me twice before I left you, I did not want to hear of your being hurt and am glad you are still living. I would have gone back to see you all when I was working in the Nashville Hospital, but one of the neighbors told me that Henry intended to shoot me if he ever got a chance . . .

I want to know particularly what the good chance is you propose to give me. I am doing tolerably well here. I get $25 a month, with victuals and clothing; have a comfortable home for Mandy (the folks call her Mrs. Anderson), and the children, Milly, Jane, and Grundy, go to school and are learning well . . .

As to my freedom, which you say I can have, there is nothing to be gained on that score, as I got my free papers in 1864 from the Provost-Marshal-General of the Department of Nashville. Mandy says she would be afraid to go back without some proof that you were disposed to treat us justly and kindly; and we have concluded to test your sincerity by asking you to send us our wages for the time we served you. This will make us forget and forgive old scores and rely on your justice and friendship in the future. I served you faithfully for thirty-two years, and Mandy twenty years. At $25 a month for me, and $2 a week for Mandy, our earnings would amount to $11,680. Add to this the interest for the time our wages have been kept back, and deduct what you paid for our clothing, and three doctor’s visits to me, and pulling a tooth for Mandy, and the balance will show what we are in justice entitled to.

From your old servant,

Jourdon Anderson

P.S.— Say howdy to George Carter and thank him for taking the pistol from you when you were shooting at me.
In "To My Old Master," which quote from the text best states a claim Jourdon makes about the value of the Colonel's offer of independence and a better life?
