Three decades later I was asked to write a creative piece about Automatic for the People, one of my favorite albums, by R.E.M., my favorite band. It was exciting. This particular project--one that commissioned a piece of creative writing for each of Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time--had almost no constraints other than a word limit, so I decided to write a story. Then I listened to the album a lot. Several times a day, at home, in the car, wherever I was, I was listening, trying to figure out how to make a story out of the lines in the twelve songs. Because that's what I wanted to do--write a story that combined all the words in the lyrics in an entirely new way. This is what we call being overly ambitious.
