Excerpt from Does My Head Look Big in This?:

My best friends, Leila Okulgen and Yasmeen Khan moved on to a public high school close to Coburg, where they live. I begged my parents to let me go with them but Mom and Dad insisted that I go to a private school. I tried everything. At first, I sucked up to them big time, making them coffee after dinner, offering to set the table before Mom had a chance to ask me, letting them watch PBS documentaries when I wanted to watch Big Brother. That didn’t work. So I turned political, ranting about them perpetuating the snobby bourgeoisie power trip of our educational system which forges aristocratic divisions between social classes (I got that from a PBS documentary). Talk about having no compassion or social conscience. They just laughed at me and gave me a pile of literature about the school.

Consider:

Art is the antidote that can call us back from the edge of numbness, restoring the ability to feel for another. — Barbara Kingsolver, High Tide in Tucson

1. By using the word antidote, what does the author imply about the inability to feel for another?

2. If we changed the word antidote to gift, what effect would it have on the meaning of the sentence?

Answers

Answer:

1. The author implies that the inability to feel for another is a sickness and its remedy or cure is Art.

2. Changing the word antidote to gift would make art seem like an endowment or talent rather that can prove helpful to him.

Explanation:

An antidote is a remedy for a disease. It is like a medicine that can be used to cure an ailment. When the author said that art is an antidote that can restore our inability to feel for another, it implies that the inability to feel for another is like a disease whose remedy can only be art.

Changing the word antidote to 'gift' makes us see art as a privilege bestowed on a person that can serve a useful purpose for him.

"The Balek Scales" can be viewed as an allegory for the elusiveness of justice in the modern world. The correct answer is option A.

"The Balek Scales" is a short story by Heinrich Böll. The story is about a young boy who tries to sell a pair of old scales to a second-hand dealer.

The story can be viewed as an allegory for the elusiveness of justice in the modern world. The scales represent the justice system, which is supposed to be fair and accurate.

However, the dealer's refusal to buy the scales suggests that the justice system is flawed and unreliable. The boy's use of the scales to weigh the dealer's daughter represents the need for justice to be applied equally to all people, regardless of their social status or wealth.

Which person quoted in the article would MOST LIKELY agree with the idea that people can learn to be kind for its own sake by first getting rewards for acts of kindness? Stan Tucker Zac Brown Quenecia Styles-Smith John-Tyler Binfet

Answers

Answer:

I think it would be John-tyler binfet

Explanation:

John-Tyler Binfet is the person quoted in the article who would MOST LIKELY agree with the idea that people can learn to be kind for their own sake by first getting rewards for acts of kindness. Hence, option D is appropriate.

What is the Act of Kindness?

Random acts of kindness are unplanned, sporadic acts intended to show generosity to other people or the wider world. In 1982, Anne Herbert wrote the words "practice random kindness but also senseless acts of beauty" on a placemat near Sausalito, California.

Everyone can live in a brighter world by performing acts of kindness. They can increase feelings of assurance, mastery, joy, and optimism. Additionally, by encouraging everyone else to carry out all the good deeds they have previously performed, they may improve the community.

By reducing stress and boosting the body's production of more feel-good hormones like dopamine, oxytocin, and serotonin when we act kindly toward others or ourselves, we can experience beneficial mental and physical improvements.

Which two sentences in these excerpts from Kate Chopin’s “The Locket” reflect the theme of holding on to love despite time and distance.

The letter had made Edmond heart sick and home sick. He stretched himself on his back and looked straight up at the blinking stars. But he was not thinking of them nor of anything but a certain spring day when the bees were humming in the clematis; when a girl was saying goodbye to him. He could see her as she unclasped from her neck the locket which she fastened about his own. It was an old fashioned golden locket bearing miniatures of her father and mother with their names and the date of their marriage. It was her most precious earthly possession.

Octavie wore a plain black dress, severe in its simplicity. A narrow belt held it at the waist and the sleeves were gathered into close fitting wristbands. She had discarded her hoopskirt and appeared not unlike a nun. Beneath the folds of her bodice nestled the old locket. She never displayed it now. It had returned to her sanctified in her eyes; made precious as material things sometimes are by being forever identified with a significant moment of one's existence.

Octavie felt as if she had passed into a stage of existence which was like a dream, more poignant and real than life. There was the old gray house with its sloping eaves. Amid the blur of green, and dimly, she saw familiar faces and heard voices as if they came from far across the fields, and Edmond was holding her. It was as if the spirit of life and the awakening spring had given back the soul to her youth and bade her rejoice.

Given that Lilliput represents Britain and Blefuscu represents France in Gulliver's Travels, what does the Lilliputian official's description of Blefuscu as "the other great empire of the universe" suggest? a a. Britain has too high an opinion of France and its military. b b. Britain sees itself and France as rival superpowers. c c. France and Britain are strong allies. d d. France is the greater country of the two.

Answers

Answer:

The Lilliputian official's description of Blefuscu as "the other great empire of the universe" suggests:

b. Britain sees itself and France as rival superpowers.

Explanation:

We can easily break the quote down: To the official, there are only two great empires. One of them is Lilliput, the other one is Blefuscu. Since Lilliput represents Britain, we can see how the author, Jonathan Swift, is using this quote to criticize Britain's narrow view of the world. They do not think of other countries as great. And the only other country whose greatness they acknowledge is precisely the one they consider their enemy. To Britain, France is its rival in being the world's superpower. Of course, since it could not be different, Lilliput and Blefuscu are enemies in the story.

The novel "Gulliver's Travels" is a satire of society written by Jonathan Swift. By describing the fictitious countries and societies where Gulliver ends up during his voyages, the author criticizes human nature and its nitpicking.

So, Mr. Ridley substituted for the day. Most of the students in Mrs. Lyon's class were normally well-behaved. However, with the anticipation of the winter break, they became a little wild. While Mr. Ridley was writing on the dry erase board, Margo threw a paper airplane at his back. The class giggled as Mr. Ridley spun around to see who had thrown the paper airplane. "Class! Throwing paper airplanes at a teacher is unacceptable and disrespectful. Who did that?" Mr. Ridley asked. The students kept their mouths closed and sat up straight in their chairs. No one volunteered any information. "Fine then, you will all stay in from recess until someone tells me who threw the airplane," Mr. Ridley said. Mercy wiggled in her seat. She wanted to tell the teacher who threw the airplane, but she was afraid that the other students would call her a tattle tale. Alan, the class clown, was thrilled that someone besides him had done something foolish. He would never tell. He would expect the same loyalty from his classmates. Margo felt nervous. She wanted to confess and apologize to Mr. Ridley, but she was afraid that she would receive a harsh punishment. She wondered how long her classmates would protect her. Jervis sat and drummed his fingers. He didn't see who threw the paper airplane, but he guessed that it had been Alan. He was tempted to raise his hand and tell the teacher that Alan was the responsible party, but he wasn't completely confident. He really wished that someone would tell who did it. It wasn't fair that the whole class was being punished for one person's mistake. Rosania was happy that the class wasn't going to recess. She had terrible allergies and wanted to stay inside. She hoped that no one would say a word until recess time was over. Mr. Ridley walked around the classroom looking at each student's face as he went by. He thought he detected sweat and shaking when he walked by Fred. He wondered if Fred was the culprit. However, Fred just needed to use the restroom but was afraid to ask. "Fred, you seem a bit anxious. What is it you want to tell me?" Mr. Ridley asked. "Nothing, sir. I-I need to use the restroom," Fred stammered. "No one is leaving this room until I find out who threw that airplane at me," Mr. Ridley said. Margo could not allow her classmates to suffer any longer. "It was me! I threw it! I'm sorry, Mr. Ridley," Margo said as she burst into tears. Mr. Ridley hated to see children cry. He rushed over to Margo and gently patted her back. "I forgive you. Don't cry," Mr. Ridley said.
