Explanation:

Florence Nightingale (1820-1910), British nurse and hospital reformer became internationally known as the founder of modern nursing. Nursing, which before her time was considered low-grade unskilled labor, became a respected profession because of her efforts.

Born in Florence, Italy, on May 12, 1820, Nightingale was raised mostly in Derbyshire, England, and received a thorough classical education from her father. From 1837 to 1839 she traveled with her parents in Europe, and the suffering she saw aroused an interest in nursing. She visited hospitals whenever possible. In 1849 she traveled in Italy, Greece, and Egypt, and in 1850 stopped in Germany to visit the hospital and school for deaconesses at Kaiserswerth, near Düsseldorf, Germany.

Nightingale returned to England determined to study nursing despite the disapproval of her parents. The following year she studied for several months at the nursing institution at Kaiserswerth. In 1853 she became superintendent of the Hospital for Invalid Gentlewomen, a small private hospital in London.

After the Crimean War broke out in 1854, Nightingale was stirred by newspaper reports about the primitive sanitation methods and grossly inadequate nursing facilities at the large British barracks-hospital at Üsküdar (now part of İstanbul, Turkey). She dispatched a letter to the British minister of war, volunteering her services in Crimea. At the same time, unaware of her action, the minister of war proposed that she assume direction of all nursing operations at the war front.

Nightingale set out for Üsküdar accompanied by 38 Roman Catholic and Anglican sisters and lay nurses. They found that the military hospitals lacked supplies, the wounded soldiers were unwashed and filthy, and diseases such as typhus, cholera, and dysentery were rampant. Under Nightingale’s supervision, efficient nursing departments were established at Üsküdar and later at Balaklava in Crimea. Through her tireless efforts the death rate among the sick and the wounded was greatly reduced. Nightingale became a national hero and was called the Lady with the Lamp and the Angel of the Crimea. Although Nightingale contracted a severe illness in the Crimea in 1855, she stayed with her hospital until the end of the war in 1856.

Returning to England when the war was over, Nightingale immediately began to reorganize the army medical service. She helped hospitals acquire proper ventilation and drainage systems and select competent, properly trained orderlies. She also introduced meticulous hospital record keeping and had an army medical school established. With a public fund raised in tribute to her services in the Crimea, Nightingale founded the Nightingale School and Home for Nurses at Saint Thomas’s Hospital in London. The opening of this school marked the beginning of professional education in nursing.

Florence Nightingale’s contributions to the evolution of nursing as a profession were invaluable. Before she undertook her reforms, nurses were largely untrained personnel who considered their job a menial chore; through her efforts the stature of nursing was raised to a medical profession with high standards of education and important responsibilities. The graduates of her school soon started nursing schools in other hospitals, and the movement for training nurses spread rapidly. Her advice was continually sought, not only on nursing matters, but also on hospital construction and management and on every aspect of public health.

Nightingale received many honors from foreign governments and in 1907 became the first woman to receive the British Order of Merit. She died in London on August 13, 1910. In 1915 the Crimean Monument in Waterloo Place, London, was erected in her honor. Her writings include Notes on Nursing (1860), the first textbook for nurses, which was translated into many languages. Among her other writings are Notes on Hospitals (1859) and Notes on Nursing for the Labouring Classes (1861)

What is nursing?

Nursing is defined as a career in the health care industry that focuses on providing treatment to people so they can achieve, maintain, or regain maximum health and quality of life. From birth to the end of life, nurses provide competent care in every community, big and small. Registered nurses (RNs) deliver and coordinate patient care, inform the public about various health issues, and offer patients' families emotional support and advice.

British nurse, social reformer, and statistician Florence Nightingale (1820–1910). She established modern nursing. She was born in Italy, hailed from a wealthy family, and was given her birthname. The concept and teachings of Florence Nightingale place a strong emphasis on the need for the nurse to use her head, heart, and hands to create healing settings for the care.

Thus, Florence Nightingale is considered nursing low-grade unskilled labor. Hence option D is correct.

Write a brief 1-2 paragraph analysis about Martin Luther King Jrs, "Letter from a Birmingham Jail" of how specific words, lines, and/or passages are relevant in the current climate and how we might revisit and/or revise any of them to guide us in the current moment.

Answers

August 1963, Martin Luther King electrified America with his momentous ‘I Have A Dream’ speech, dramatically delivered from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial.

His soaring rhetoric demanding racial justice and an integrated society became a mantra for the black community and is as familiar to subsequent generations of Americans as the US Declaration of Independence. His words proved to be a touchstone for understanding the social and political upheaval of the time and gave the nation a vocabulary to express what was happening.

The key message in the speech is that all people are created equal and, although not the case in America at the time, King felt it must be the case for the future. He argued passionately and powerfully.

So what were his compositional strategies and techniques?

Certainly King’s speech was well researched. In preparation he studied the Bible, The Gettysburg Address and the US Declaration of Independence and he alludes to all three in his address.

Stylistically the speech has been described as a political treatise, a work of poetry, and a masterfully delivered and improvised sermon, bursting with biblical language and imagery. As well as rhythm and frequent repetition, alliteration is a hallmark device, used to bang home key points.

Which phrase could be applied to both the grass in “Song of Myself” and the stars in “When I Heard the Learn’d Astronomer”?
A) brief, but eternal
B) tiny, but powerful
C) simple, but complex
D) beautiful, but dangerous

Answers

Answer:

The correct option is C) Simple but Complex.

Explanation:

In "Song of Myself", we see that the writer uses the word grass several times. From the point of view of the above question, we are forced to look at the grass from a metonymical point of view.

Verse 6 for instance shows the writer referring to the grass as the child of the vegetation (line 7) and then in line 12 he calls it the "uncut hair of graves".

In lines 13-16, he shifts his paradigm of the grass again, calling it a uniform hieroglyphic (that is some sort of coded language) that unifies people of different colors and political orientations.

Hence, the grass by an account of the multiplicity of the above paradigms ceases to be just grass but many other things as indicated by the writer of the "Song of Myself"

In the Learn'd Astronomer, the poem ends with the writer looking up in perfect

silence at the stars, his gaze, an awestruck wonder (see line 7 where he describes the night as mystical) at how sitting on the earth these tiny twinkling starts are same as the enormous complicated entities described in lines 2 and 3.

Hence their simplicity and simultaneous complexity.

Cheers
