Africa is a continent that teems with interesting animals. Many people travel to Africa to see these wonders of nature. People who travel to Africa often choose to go on safaris. A safari is a journey or trip. According to etymologists, the word safari appeared in the mid- to late-1800s. It was first used to refer to a hunting trip, usually to Africa. Now, people commonly use it to describe a trip during which people view many types of wildlife.(2) There are different kinds of safaris. The type of safari people choose determines what they do, where they stay, and what they see. During some safaris, people stay in lodges; during others, they stay in tents. People on safaris can either walk or drive the trails. No matter what kind of safari they choose, adventurers will thrive on a trip to the wilds of Africa. Nature will provide travelers with spectacular views and wonderful adventures.(3) The nature in Africa is unlike any other place on Earth. Africa has one of the most diverse animal populations in the world. However, many people who go on safaris hope to see the “Big Five” animals. The Big Five include the lion, the leopard, the elephant, the rhino, and the buffalo. Africa is the only place where the Big Five live together in the wild. Not everyone on a safari will see all of the Big Five. The number of each type of animal varies in different parts of the continent. The best place to see a large assortment of wild animals is at a park or a reserve.(4) The Big Five are certainly interesting to see, but Africa is home to other unique animals as well. For example, the fastest land animal in the world, the cheetah, calls Africa home. These big, speckled cats can race across the plains at speeds up to seventy miles per hour. Safari goers might also be lucky enough to see a giraffe, the tallest land animal in the world. Zebras, horse-like creatures covered in black and white stripes, also live in Africa. Near certain rivers and lakes, people might catch sight of a hippopotamus or a crocodile. Both of these animals spend much of their time in the water.(5) Large, wild animals draw many people to Africa for safaris, but they are not the only wildlife to see. Parts of Africa are great places to go bird watching. Some larger birds such as ostriches and flamingoes are a common sight. If safari goers are patient, however, they might also see birds like the crowned crane, the ground hornbill, and the Kori Bustard.(6) African safaris are adventures that many people think about, but few actually take. More people should pack a bag, a camera, and binoculars and travel to the lovely African continent for a safari.

What is the main idea of this passage?
A)Safaris allow people to see many interesting types of animals.
B)Travelers can choose either walking safaris or driving safaris.
C)The word safari was once used to describe a hunting trip.
D)Africa is the only place where the Big Five live together in the wild.

On page 82, Sandy and Judge Ford
discuss the possibility that Sam
Westing "just up and died, and there is
no murderer...Westing is out to get
somebody from his grave." If this is
true, who would Westing be out to get?
Why?

Answers

Answer:

If Sandy's opinion is true, then it means Westing is out to get his killer revealed.

He would do this to catch his murderer, to find the culprit responsible for his death.

Explanation:

Ellen Raskin's "The Westing Game" revolves around the story of an old man Westing's death and the subsequent will that he left, with the declaration that he was murdered. The story follows the 16 heirs of Samuel Westing and their game that will ensure the winner will get the inheritance.

When Sam Westing died and he declared in his will that he was murdered, most probably by one of his 16 heirs, he proposed a game that will reveal the identity of the killer. So, if Sandy's opinion that "Westing is out to get somebody from his grave" is true, then it means Westing wants to get his killer.

He would be out to get the killer because he is the one who murdered him.

Provide an example of a prey defense, and explain how the defense helps the animal survive.

Answers

Answer:

Injecting predator with noxious materials, or playing dead to trick a predator.

Explanation:

Some animals become main prey either due to the popularity of their own species, commonly food around its ecosystem, or unbalanced ecosystem in their area and so they become prey only because they are the only main source for them. In this case some prey defend themselves in order to stay alive even if it means death.

An example of prey defense, which increases the chances of survival, is camouflage.

We can arrive at this answer because:

Camouflage can be performed by animals (prey) that have colors very similar to the environment in which they are. With this, they can hide in this environment, not being seen by the predator. If the predator cannot see them, it cannot capture them and this increases the survival of those prey.

An example of this can be seen in brown moths that can camouflage themselves in tree branches of the same color.
