Personification: This is attribution of the qualities of humans to inanimate things. Night is exemplified as an animate thing that can cover someone.

Metaphor: This is the comparison of two things that have no similarities but have something in common. In this first sentence, night is likened to hardship. Just as bad and unforeseen things happen during the night, so does hardship come with uncertainties.

Consonance: This is the repetition of the initial consonant sounds in a group of words. The repetition of the p sound exemplifies this- pit from pole to  pole.
