On Christmas Eve I saw that my mother had outdone herself in creating a

strange menu. She was pulling black veins out of the backs of fleshy prawns. The

kitchen was littered with appalling mounds of raw food: A slimy rock cod with

bulging fish eyes that pleaded not to be thrown into a pan of hot oil. Tofu, which

looked like stacked wedges of rubbery white sponges. A howl soaking dried fungus

back to life. A plate of squid, their backs crisscrossed with knife markings so they

resembled bicycle tires.

Hope Is the Thing with Feathers - Comprehension Questions

3. Hope is important and helpful in times of pain, sorrow, or difficulty. Which lines from the poem best supports this statement?

A. Lines 5-8 B. Lines 11-12 C. Lines 1-2 D. Lines 3-4

Answers

Answer:

A). Lines 5-8

Explanation:

In the context of Emily Dickinson's poem titled 'Hope Is The Thing With Feathers,' the 'lines from 5-8' substantiate the claim that hope plays a significant and useful in dealing with the odd times. In the second quatrain, the poetess elaborates the idea that hope seems the sweetest during rough times. Hope turns most helpful when you start suffering a storm or struggle through a difficult phase of your life. The description of the bird further conveys that hope is the armour that shields you from adverse situations and when things seem hard to us. Thus, option A is the correct answer.

1) Setting

2) Plot

3) Characters

4) Conflict

5) Conflict resolution

6) Theme/s

7) Point – of – View

8) Your reaction to the story
PLEASE HELP!!!! ITS DUE ON WEDNESDAY

Answers

Answer:

The setting.

Miguel Street is set during World War II on Miguel Street located in Port of Spain, the capital of Trinidad and Tobago. V.S. Naipaul is known for setting his novels in areas of the world that are typically forgotten about and overlooked in traditional literature canons. Most books set in this time period occur where the war was actively occurring. Yet, World War II altered the entire world. V.S. Naipaul contributes a meaningful voice to literature from this time.

Characters

The Men

We see the goings-on of the people of Miguel Street through the narrator's eyes. He begins the story as a young boy who regularly interacts with some interesting characters. There are construction workers like Popo, drivers like Eddoes, and poets like B. Wordsworth. The men enjoy the ladies, especially George, who briefly runs a brothel-of-sorts. Elias, George's son, is educated and ''serious and ambitious.'' Man-man is also serious, even mad, regularly running for public office.

Life is not always serious, however. Morgan, whose house fire prompts an awe-inspiring fireworks display, is the comedian and ''pyrotechnicist.'' He may have also benefited from the teachings of Titus Hoyt. Hoyt is a ''a natural guide, philosopher.'' He's the street's educator and book enthusiast. Uncle Bhakcu is educated, but not about books. He is, per the narrator (but not his wife), a ''mechanical genius.'' The award for the saddest man on the street goes to Bolo, a barber duped by a house co-op purchase. The award for the most jovial goes to Hat. He taunts, commiserates, and bonds with the others. He offers advice (albeit unsolicited). As Hat observes, ''Everybody's growing up or they leaving.''

The Women

While everyone seems to be leaving, the women aren't. Dolly, Hat's wife, ''seemed to spend a great deal of her time at the front window looking out.'' Mrs. Bhakcu doesn't hide behind a window as she taunts her husband. ''But how you want me to shut my mouth up? You is my husband, and I have to stand up for you.''

Whether they intermingle or not, one common characteristic among many of the women is their maternal instinct. The narrator's mother gives guiding advice and commentary. Another mother, Laura, who, according to the narrator, is not much of a looker, has borne eight children. And as the women bring life to the community, for some of the women, like Miss Hilton, death is the only way out. ''While she lived, her front gate was always padlocked and no one ever saw her leave or saw anybody go in.'' The women are a stronghold among the men, even if they do not dominate the focus.

The plot

The reader encounters 17 men and women, revealed to us by an unnamed narrator. Miguel Street reveals a lot about the human condition and about how failure alters lives.

The conflict

Bogart is arrested for bigamy or having two wives. This is an example of a man vs society conflict in two ways: Bogart feels the pressure to father a child because of cultural beliefs about masculinity, and he is eventually punished by that same society for attempting to fulfill this idea.

Popo has similar issues proving his masculinity to the others on Miguel St. The ways that he struggles with his reputation because of his relationship to his wife represent a man vs society conflict as well. In another case, Popo's failure to finish any of his woodworking projects could be considered a man vs self conflict.

When Morgan's house burns down, Morgan experiences a man vs nature conflict because no one set the fire, but it still destroys so much of his life.

Which sentence in this excerpt from Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein suggests that Frankenstein was distant as a young boy?
We were brought up together; there was not quite a year difference in our ages. I need not say that we were strangers to any species of disunion or dispute. Harmony was the soul of our companionship, and the diversity and contrast that subsisted in our characters drew us nearer together. Elizabeth was of a calmer and more concentrated disposition; but, with all my ardour, I was capable of a more intense application and was more deeply smitten with the thirst for knowledge. She busied herself with following the aerial creations of the poets; and in the majestic and wondrous scenes which surrounded our Swiss home —the sublime shapes of the mountains, the changes of the seasons, tempest and calm, the silence of winter, and the life and turbulence of our Alpine summers—she found ample scope for admiration and delight. While my companion contemplated with a serious and satisfied spirit the magnificent appearances of things, I delighted in investigating their causes. The world was to me a secret which I desired to divine. Curiosity, earnest research to learn the hidden laws of nature, gladness akin to rapture, as they were unfolded to me, are among the earliest sensations I can remember.

On the birth of a second son, my junior by seven years, my parents gave up entirely their wandering life and fixed themselves in their native country. We possessed a house in Geneva, and a campagne on Belrive, the eastern shore of the lake, at the distance of rather more than a league from the city. We resided principally in the latter, and the lives of my parents were passed in considerable seclusion. It was my temper to avoid a crowd and to attach myself fervently to a few. I was indifferent, therefore, to my school-fellows in general; but I united myself in the bonds of the closest friendship to one among them. Henry Clerval was the son of a merchant of Geneva. He was a boy of singular talent and fancy. He loved enterprise, hardship, and even danger for its own sake. He was deeply read in books of chivalry and romance. He composed heroic songs and began to write many a tale of enchantment and knightly adventure. He tried to make us act plays and to enter into masquerades, in which the characters were drawn from the heroes of Roncesvalles, of the Round Table of King Arthur, and the chivalrous train who shed their blood to redeem the holy sepulchre from the hands of the infidels.

In august of 1936, why do you think they removed the anti-Jewish posters and propaganda in Berlin during the Olympics

Answers

Answer:

The anti-Jewish posters and propaganda were removed to camouflage German Nazi's racist policies and to present an image of a peaceful and tolerant Germany to the world.

Explanation:

The 1936 Olympics in Berlin was given to Germany by the International Olympic Committee in 1931. The summer Olympics of 1936 was also referred to as the Nazi Olympics.

Despite Germany's discriminatory actions and attitudes against the Jews, this Olympics was used as a chance to present to the world the peaceful nature of Germany. Even after 'refusing' Jewish athletes to be part of the sporting event, being excluded because of their "Jewish" identity, Germany made the event as a chance to present its propaganda of an 'all-inclusive’, tolerant, and 'open' nation. And even though the propaganda against the Jews was still ongoing and even more aggressive, posters depicting discriminating messages and images against the Jews were removed so that the world 'may' see a new Germany, a tolerant and peaceful Germany.

Introduction

Past simple

We use the past simple to describe:

finished actions in the past:

"I studied for an exam."

finished actions over periods of time in the past:

"I studied for four years."

habits in the past:

"I studied every night when I was at school."

past facts:

"I studied history at university."

Past continuous

We use the past continuous:

to emphasise the continuous nature of a finished action in the past:

"I was studying for an exam all night."

to describe a continuous action that was in progress at a particular time:

"At 11am, I was visiting my grandmother."

We do not use the past continuous for habits in the past: not "I was taking the bus to school."

Past continuous vs. past simple

We can use the past simple and the past continuous in the same sentence structure with different meanings:

The past simple describes when the action started:

"At 7am, I went to work."

This means that the journey to work began at 7am.

The past continuous describes an action that was already in progress:

"At 7am, I was going to work."

This means that the journey to work was already in progress at 7am; it began before 7am.

Using "when" and "while" to describe actions that happen at the same time

"when" and past simple

We use "when" with the past simple to describe two actions where one action is the result of another action, or happens immediately after:

"I went downstairs when I heard the doorbell."

or

"When I heard the doorbell, I went downstairs."

The action of going downstairs is the result of hearing the doorbell.

"What did you do when the telephone rang?"

This question asks about your action as a result of hearing the telephone ring.

"I left the house."

The answer means that immediately after the telephone rang, you left the house (suggesting that you did not answer the telephone).

"when" with past continuous and past simple

We use "when" with the past continuous and past simple:

to describe an action that was in progress (using past continuous) when another action happened (using past simple):

"I was studying history at university when I learnt to play the saxophone."

to describe a continuous action that was already in progress (using past continuous) and was interrupted by a shorter action (using past simple):

"I was going downstairs when I heard the doorbell."

or

"When I heard the doorbell, I was going downstairs."

The action of going downstairs was already in progress and was interrupted when the doorbell rang.

"What were you doing when the telephone rang?"

This question asks about the action that was interrupted when the telephone rang.

"I was leaving the house."

The answer means that before the telephone rang, you were already in the process of leaving the house (suggesting that it is possible that you did answer the telephone).

"while"

We use "while" with the past continuous to describe a continuous action that was in progress at the same time as another action, using either the past simple or past continuous:

"She read the newspaper while I was doing the gardening."

or "While I was doing the gardening, she read the newspaper."

"She was reading the newspaper while I was doing the gardening."

or "While I was doing the gardening, she was reading the newspaper."

"What were you doing while the telephone rang?" This question asks about your action at the same time as the telephone rang (suggesting that you were doing something else instead of answering the telephone).

Processed and fried foods, such as cold cuts, store-bought baked goods, candy, and chips don’t have many of the nutrients our bodies and brains need, Richardson says.

In a May 2020 study, researchers showed that a junk food diet can be particularly bad for teen brains.

Junk food may trigger attention-related problems because it does not contain the good fats needed to build healthy brain cells, says Richardson.

The first is that the brain's reward system — the one that feels good when we do something we like — becomes less sensitive to food cues.
