Answer:

was the Cuban Missile Crisis, in October 1962. Fear of total human annihilation is a tough feeling to live with every day. For children growing up in the Cold War, mutually assured nuclear destruction literally haunted their dreams. After many long and difficult meetings, Kennedy decided to place a naval blockade, or a ring of ships, around Cuba. The aim of this "quarantine," as he called it, was to prevent the Soviets from bringing in more military supplies. He demanded the removal of the missiles already there and the destruction of the sites.

An expository essay on how to prepare my favorite food

Answers

Essay Sample – My Favorite Food Is …

How lucky we are today – all delicious food is easily available to us! Sometimes, I wonder how life was in the ancient past when our ancestors did not have easy access to food which we have today. Want to try out the Chinese food? No need to go to China! Just visit any restaurant in the city and get familiar with these hot and salty tastes. Do in the same way when you want to eat an American traditional dish, a burger, for example.

Although I can find food of all kinds in stores, there is food that stands out as my favorite one. I easily walk past the pizzas, the fluffy pastries, pies, and cream cakes. But when I sit in the restaurant and see the words oxtail stew with creamed spinach and potatoes, I drool immediately.

I remember the moment when a waiter of Waitron placed the crispy warm bread rolls beside me on a white plate. In front of me, there were yellow balls of butter. Next, she placed in front of me a bowl of creamed spinach, dark green finely cut with the white cream and steam coming from it advertising it was freshly cooked. I inhaled the warm aroma unique to spinach. Beside it, there was a bowl with smooth white mashed potato. Rich creamy smooth and firm from the butter and milk that had been beaten into it to add to its flavor and smooth texture.

Then the bowl full of oxtail stew came. Its rich dark brown color was set off by the white bowl it was in. The gravy was thick and rich. I could smell the aroma of beef, garlic, and herbs and spices drifting up from it into my nose. Unfortunately, any food has a tendency to get cold. My mouth watered in anticipation to eat it.

Now, I took the silver spoon and dipped it into the bowl of potato. It smoothly penetrated the firm fluffy white mound. I lifted the spoon and turned it over on my plate depositing a mound of potato. I repeated this 3 times. Then using another spoon, I scooped up spinach dripping white sauce and put it on the plate beside the potato. The dark green spinach was hot, the white sauce melted and it contrasted with the creamy potato. After a second helping of spinach, I took another larger spoon. I dipped it into the rich brown stew and stirred it. Then I scooped up a chunky slice of oxtail. Several other pieces followed that one onto my plate, the rich brown meat, contrasting with the dark green spinach and creamy white potato. The succulent meat gleaming with a coating of rich gravy and the aroma of gravy, garlic spinach and potato blending in the steam rising from my plate. I scooped up gravy from the bowl and trickled it over the white potato catching the scent of red wine. I broke the roll and spread butter on it and I was ready to eat.

Now the decision where to start, so I bit into the fresh crisp roll and tasted its warm soft texture and the melting butter. By then I had decided to sample the potato with gravy and the spinach. The potato was smooth, with a taste of butter overpowered with the tangy gravy, its garlic and hint of good red wine in it. The spinach was a good foil. Smooth with its vegetable texture and plain white sauce it softened the taste of the gravy. Then I used my fork and removed the succulent meat from the bone. Its soft texture, fatty feeling in the mouth, the spice wine and garlic in the gravy made it perfect.

Finally, I sat contented at my table eating as much as I could, and more than I should of my favorite food.

Read The Water Cycle.

The water cycle is a natural phenomenon. It has implications for all of the living creatures it affects. Water is drawn up into the atmosphere as it evaporates from the ground, rivers, lakes, oceans, flora. and fauna. This water collects in our atmosphere. Then, it gathers together in concentrations that form clouds. Eventually, the clouds become too dense with water. This causes precipitation to begin and fall back down through our atmosphere. It lands on the Earth's surface as rain or snow. This precipitation then travels through the ground, plants, rivers, lakes and oceans. From there, it evaporates back up into the air to begin the cycle again.

Water is restorative in nature. A threat to the natural restorative nature of the water cycle is acid rain. Acid rain is caused by certain gas emissions in our atmosphere. Volcanoes release some of these gases naturally. However, the primary cause of these harmful emissions is human activity and industry. Large factories and gas-powered vehicles send harmful pollutants into the air. As these harmful gases are released into the atmosphere, they are caught in evaporated water molecules, causing acid clouds to form. The gases are also picked up by precipitation that falls from the clouds. The gases mix with the water molecules to form acids, which then fall from the sky as rain or snow. As air pollution continues, acid rain in the water cycle worsens.

Acid rain can poison plants and be harmful to animals. It is so strong that it slowly breaks down buildings and stone. The acids break down building materials. They can also burn the leaves of plants. Acid rain can even change the chemical make up of soil, making it toxic to plant life. It can also lower the productivity of farms and crop yields. As rivers and lakes become more acidic, acid rain destroys fish and aquatic life. Ocean creatures with exoskeletons are at risk of acidic waters. The acid weakens and dissolves their exoskeleton. There are many harmful effects on the water cycle caused by acid rain.

What weakens the author's argument in the third paragraph of "Coming Soon to a Neighborhood Near You"?

The next challenge is finding a feed store—where most of the supplies you’ll need can be found. Feed stores generally offer a cheap bedding material such as pine shavings as well as prepared food to supplement the plants and bugs that chickens can find in a reasonably healthy backyard. Then there are the chickens themselves, which range in price from a couple bucks for a chick to ten or fifteen dollars for a mature, feathered-out bird. (Most seasoned backyard farmers recommend starting with mature hens.) Of course, it you want to raise your hens from chicks, you’ll need a warming light as well as some other equipment.

a.) The author does not specify how many hens a person should purchase, casting doubt on his or her authority.
b.) The author does not tell the reader what kind of bedding supplies will be needed for the coop.
c.) The author does not explain what vague phrases like "some other equipment" mean, lessening credibility.
d.) The author does not define the terms "mature hen" or "seasoned backyard farmers" for the reader.

Answers

Answer:

C but there are problems.

Explanation:

It is important to know how many chickens (chicks) to start with, but the feed store can tell you that. Usually there is a vague formula that will solve that problem. So by a narrow margin, you can eliminate A.

The bedding is stated as pine wood chips, so the answer is not B

C: is the one I would choose C. What other equipment are we going to need? That's critical. Thousands of dollars worth or just things you could find in an ordinary hardware store. The only problem is, can the coop tell us or are we relying on the "seasoned backyard farmer"?

D: I think we can guess what a mature hen. If the author does not know what a mature hen is, he's in the wrong business. I also think a seasoned back yard farmer" is something we understand to mean someone who has done this before.

Read the following excerpt from Levitt and Dubner’s Freakonomics.

The bagel data also reflect how much personal mood seems to affect honesty. Weather, for instance, is a major factor. Unseasonably pleasant weather inspires people to pay at a higher rate. Unseasonably cold weather, meanwhile, makes people cheat prolifically; so do heavy rain and wind. Worst are the holidays. The week of Christmas produces a 2 percent drop in payment rates—again, a 15 percent increase in theft, an effect on the same magnitude, in reverse, as that of 9/11. Thanksgiving is nearly as bad; the week of Valentine’s Day is also lousy, as is the week straddling April 15. There are, however, a few good holidays: the weeks that include the Fourth of July, Labor Day, and Columbus Day. The difference in the two sets of holidays? The low-cheating holidays represent little more than an extra day off from work. The high-cheating holidays are fraught with miscellaneous anxieties and the high expectations of loved ones.

Based on the excerpt, the conclusion that “personal mood seems to affect honesty” is best supported by which of the following statements?
Relaxing summer and fall holidays generally cause payment rates to drop.
Stressful fall and winter holidays generally cause payment rates to drop.
Relaxing summer and fall holidays generally cause theft rates to increase.
Stressful fall and winter holidays generally cause theft rates to remain steady.

What is Levitt and Dubner’s Freakonomics about?

Freakonomics by Levitt and Dubner is a book that applies economic theories and principles to everyday life and various social issues.

The authors employ data analysis and storytelling to explain complex economic concepts to a general audience. The book went on to become a best-seller, popularising the field of behavioural economics.

This is the conclusion that "The statement "personal mood appears to affect honesty" is best supported by the statement "unseasonably pleasant weather inspires people to pay at a higher rate."

Meanwhile, unseasonably cold weather, as well as heavy rain and wind, encourages people to cheat.

Holidays are the worst." This statement implies that external factors such as weather and holidays can influence people's behaviour and honesty when paying for bagels, supporting the idea that personal mood can influence honesty.

Thus, the correct option is 2.

OUT through the fields and the woods
And over the walls I have wended;
I have climbed the hills of view
And looked at the world, and descended;
I have come by the highway home,
And lo, it is ended.
The leaves are all dead on the ground,
Save those that the oak is keeping
To ravel them one by one
And let them go scraping and creeping
Out over the crusted snow,
When others are sleeping.
And the dead leaves lie huddled and still,
No longer blown hither and thither;
The last lone aster is gone;
The flowers of the witch-hazel wither;
The heart is still aching to seek,
But the feet question 'Whither?'
Ah, when to the heart of man
Was it ever less than a treason
To go with the drift of things,
To yield with a grace to reason,
And bow and accept and accept the end

SAVE SPIRIT WEEK By David Pinsky Teachers at Harrison Middle school feel that Spirit week should be canceled. They argue that it interrupts classes in many ways. Students may forget to do their homework as they concentrate on the Spirit Week themes. A few students skip classes and some go to a different lunch period. Students spend extra time in the bathrooms combing their hair and adjusting their outfits. Some students goof around in class and find it hard to settle down. If Spirit Week isn’t canceled, teachers warn that school will no longer be a good place to learn. We, the students, feel that Spirit Week encourages us to be better students. Spirit Week is a way for us to show our creativity. For example, last year we had a 70’s theme. Students learned how a person dressed during this decade, and they tried to imitate those fashions. Such a theme teaches us about culture and history. Spirit week also gives us feelings of pride. At the end of the week, we wear our school colors and support our basketball team against our rivals, the Wildcats. Finally, we feel that Spirit Week teaches us how to work in groups and how to pan and organize an event. Everyone loves Spirit Week.
