Like songs, poems are meant to be experienced aurally, or out loud. The experience of reading a poem can be greatly enhanced by listening to it read aloud. Read part of a post where a student discusses the differences between the two.

When you're listening to songs on the radio, so many of those have end rhymes, so I am used to hearing rhyme and to picking up on it when reading silently. What was surprising was how clear alliteration is when read out loud! I didn't even notice the alliteration in line 7 when I read silently, but it jumped out at me when I listened to it read. Alliteration is used a lot in rap songs, so I'm going to try reading a song's lyrics silently and then listening to the song itself—I bet it will be quite a different experience!

First, poems are aural compositions. Poets compose their works with the ear in mind. W.H. Auden, a British poet who has been widely anthologized in major collections of poetry, made a case for listening to poems when he said, ''No poem, which when mastered, is not better heard than read is good poetry.'' In other words, good poetry works better through the ears than through the eyes.

Poets develop an ear for the musicality of language, and that's why we have so many words for the acoustic effects in poetry. Acoustics refers to the sounds in a poem. Words not only deliver a meaning, but they deliver a sound as well. As an example, let's think about the word ''crackle.'' The word refers to a series of popping sounds, and when you say it aloud, you actually hear those popping sounds from the hard ''c'' and ''k.'' This word shows onomatopoeia, the poetic term for a word that generates the sound it describes. ''Crackle'' is also a harsh-sounding word. In poetry we call that cacophony. There are many other devices that poets use to describe their skillful manipulation of sounds.

Because poems are meant to be heard, poets have to understand how to manipulate both the sounds and the cadence of poetry. That cadence is called poetic meter, and like the acoustic terms, it's most effective when heard. All language comes in syllables that are either loud or soft. Consider the word ''poetry.'' This word has three syllables, and the first one is much louder than the middle syllable. When a poet utilizes poetic meter, he stacks those loud and soft syllables in a pattern that creates a rhythm, and that rhythm is hard to hear unless the poem is read aloud. Think about looking at sheet music; it takes years of study to ''hear'' the sounds from only seeing the notes. Like sheet music, the music of poems comes through when performed on the instrument of the human voice.

Reading for Understanding

The second reason to read poems out loud is to understand them better. All those subtle sounds and rhythms, those are directly tied to the meaning of the poem. It's much harder to comprehend and interpret a poem without hearing it, or better yet, reading it aloud for yourself. By reading the poem, you take on the role of the poem's speaker, and that will give you insight into the speaker's perspective, which is critical for understanding a poem.

Today was the day, Heather decided. She would row that boat across the river in less than half an hour, beating her brother’s record. Of course, even on a sunny, windless day like today, she knew the task would be difficult. No matter the weather, the river currents were always strong. Still, Heather was strong, too. She was a very competitive person. She had been practicing rowing for months. She knew all the tips for using the oars to achieve speed and smoothness in the water. A proud British lord and lady had taken a trip to Africa with their young infant. They traveled through the jungle exploring different habitats and observing animals. One unfortunate day, their camp was raided by a tribe that did not appreciate that the British were trying to settle in their territory. The tribe chased the baby's parents away, and the baby was left alone. A group of apes could hear the baby crying, and they pitied the poor child. An ape family decided to take the young baby in and raise the baby as their own. Many other chimps and monkeys mocked the ape family for their decision. They claimed that humans were destructive beasts and that one day the child might turn on them. On July 4, 1939, Lou Gehrig gave one of the most famous speeches in sports history. The occasion was "Lou Gehrig Appreciation Day" at Yankee Stadium in New York. Parts of the speech are well known to this day: "Fans, for the past two weeks you have been reading about the bad break I got. Yet today I consider myself the luckiest man on the face of the earth." The audio recording of his voice echoing throughout the stadium has been replayed countless times.
The "bad break" Gehrig alluded to in his speech was his contraction of a fatal disease known as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis or ALS. ALS is a neuromuscular disease that attacks nerve cells in the central nervous system, causing paralysis and eventually death. No one knows what causes ALS, and nearly 30,000 people in the United States live with the disease. Because of Gehrig's extreme celebrity and the tragedy of his death, ALS is commonly referred to as Lou Gehrig's disease.
Before the symptoms of ALS began causing problems for Gehrig, he was one of the greatest baseball players in history. Known as "The Iron Horse" because of his durability, Gehrig played in 2,130 straight games without an absence. The streak was cut short by Gehrig's retirement due to ALS. The streak of 2,130 consecutive games stood for 56 years until it was broken by Cal Ripken, Jr. in 1995. Sixty years after he retired, fans made him the leading vote-getter for the Major League Baseball All-Century Team.
Over 70 years later, what many remember about Gehrig is his humbleness. He always recognized that he was, in his own words, "the luckiest man on the face of the earth." He had been given extraordinary athletic ability and played on one of the greatest baseball teams in history. He had loving, supportive parents and a wife of tremendous bravery. He was able to do what he loved most, play baseball, for 16 seasons. Though he died only two short years after his disease was diagnosed, Gehrig will long be remembered.
