Malaria is a dangerous disease in many parts of the world. The illness has become more serious in recent years. Scientists are trying to fight malaria by developing a new vaccine, or drug remedy. If successful, it will prevent people from catching the disease. However, to test the vaccine, volunteers will have to be exposed to malaria. Scientists will ensure that volunteers are safe. The volunteers will be watched closely. Even if the vaccine fails to work, they will get no sicker than they would get with the flu. The volunteers will get medical treatment before the malaria worsens.

Directions: Read the passage, and answer the question that follows. Have you ever considered how tedious an action or suspense movie would be without sound effects? Sounds are a mechanism for building suspense. The snap of a breaking twig in the forest lets you know the main character is not alone. A staged fight scene seems real when you hear the sound of a hard whack. Even with all the options modern technology offers many sound effects are created using common materials. Sounds effects artists produce the sound of crackling flames by crinkling wax paper. Shaking a sheet of aluminum foil creates a loud rumble of thunder In a fight scene fake punches seem to connect. The sounds of fighting are produced by sound effects artists who pummel cushions or wet their hands and clap them together. Finding a way to create just the right sound is a big accomplishment. Sound effects artists are an adventure movie's real stars

Read the excerpt from "Mami and Papi."
She pushed and shoved and turned me so fast I didn’t know what to do with my body, so I flailed, seeming to resist, while in fact I wanted nothing more than to be rid of the creepy crawling things that covered me. Mami wrapped me in a towel and lifted me out of the tub with a groan. Hundreds of black bugs floated between the bubbles.
She carried me to the house pressed against her bosom, fragrant of curdled milk. Delsa and Norma ran after us, but Papi scooped them up, one on each arm, and carried them to the rope swing. Mami balanced on the floorboards to her bed, lay me beside her, held me tight, kissed my forehead, my eyes, and murmured, “It’s all right. It’s over. It’s all right.”

From Enemy to Friend
Wolves and dogs are closely related. Most scientists believe that dogs’ ancestors were wolves. Through time, wolves became tame enough to live with humans and help them. The change from wolf to dog was probably a result of careful breeding. Early humans allowed only the friendliest wolf pups to remain near them. This ensured that, over time, the wolves that stayed with groups of humans became tamer and tamer.
Wolves were influenced by their relationship with humans. So, they slowly became what we know today as dogs. They became adept at protecting and herding sheep and other animals whereas their ancestors would have made a meal of them. This ability made dogs very useful. However, although they are quite similar, wolves and dogs are also quite different.
Wolves are wild animals that live in packs, or groups, and eat only meat. They find their food by hunting. The most common noise they make is a howl. They may also bark, growl, yelp, and whine. All wolves look very much alike, although their colors vary slightly. They are large, slender, powerful animals with long legs and tails. Wolves are quite wary of people; they don’t trust them. They attack people only on rare occasions, usually when they are startled.
A small dog is looking up at a large wolf.
Dogs, on the other hand, are tame. They have been influenced by people for many, many years, which has made them quite different from wolves. For one thing, dogs eat vegetables and grains as well as meat products. They are much more likely to bark than to howl. Their sizes range from gigantic animals that are much larger than wolves to tiny animals that can sit comfortably in a cereal bowl. Large dogs are not only taller than wolves, but they are much heavier, and their appearances can vary as much as their sizes.
However, the main difference is found in dogs’ relationship with humans, whom they usually prefer to be near. The main effect of this is that most dogs are friendly to people. Some show hostility, but almost always only to strangers. Although most dogs are no smarter than wolves, they can certainly be trained more easily. They rarely hunt prey to eat and depend on their owners to supply them with food. This reliance on people just adds to the closeness of the relationship.
Wolves and dogs both pant to stay cool. They both can hear and smell very well, and they both can run silently. They even have the same number of teeth: 42. However, no matter how similar wolves and dogs may seem to be, wolves can never be made into a pet. They are also worthless as guard animals because they are shy. Domestic animals, such as cats and small dogs, are in more danger from wolves than humans are, but small children can also be in danger. The Big Bad Wolf may exist only in fairy tales, but real wolves can be as much of a threat, especially if they are not understood.
This question has two parts. First, answer part A. Then, answer part B.

Answer:
anachronism; lamented; denigrated; nemesis; lackeys.
Explanation:
The elderly Carl knew that he was an anachronism among the young programmers working in his office. Each time he struggled to send a simple e-mail message, he lamented the death of the typewriter-and-telephone era in which he had spent most of his career. Bitter that the end of his own usefulness approached, Carl often denigrated the young programmers for having no concept of how to use their own brains -- not calculators -- to solve equations or analyze data. Technology had become the programmers' nemesis, he felt, and had turned him into a dinosaur. Sometimes the young manager and his lackeys mused at Carl's outdated experience with punch cards and mainframes, and it fueled Carl's resentment. He couldn't wait to retire.
The correct words to fill the given blanks would be as follows:
6). defunct;
7). lamented;
8). denigrated;
9). nemesis
10). lackeys.
What is defunct?"Defunct" is described as an adjective employed to describe someone who is likely dead or deceased(of no use).
Carl considers himself as 'defunct' as he is unable to adjust to advanced technologies like keyboard or computer.
This is the cause he regrets over the abandonment of old typewriters, as well as, telephones.
However, he criticizes the other employees for being dependent on technology excessively instead of using their brains.
Thus, he considers technology as the modern programmer's 'nemesis' which makes him feel 'outdated' and being critiqued by the manager's lackeys.

The awareness of animal abuse.
Did you know that the awareness of animal abuse is strong, due to the fact of how many sad commercials of suffering animals are on TV? Animals die every day due to starvation or sickness because the shelters don’t have shelter space or money for food. If we adopt these poor animals, there will be space for more to be in better conditions. Each year, approximately 2.7 million dogs and cats are killed every year because shelters are too full and there aren't enough adoptive homes. A part of that problem may be because of allergy or the animal is too much of a responsibility.
To add to this, I am going to write about how these animals can benefit you in your home. Dogs are helpful in ways of emotional support and care for humans. Certain animals are unwell trained so if you have children, they can learn how to take care of a dog properly. Cats need less care than a dog but they still need taking care of. You have to feed them, play with them, sleep with them, give them plenty of exercises, give them baths, give them water, and keep them at room temperature. A fact about bathing cats is that you must bathe them in lukewarm water. They have much thinner skin than humans. when you bathe a dog, they usually move around a LOT! Since most cats and dogs don’t have a place to live, they can’t have the care they need.
