Too Fast

Batnik’s father was a great inventor. He had created many things that made people’s lives easier. One of his inventions was a car that could operate on both water and land; this car was Batnik’s favorite. On water, it could float and travel at speeds up to 80 miles per hour. But on land, it could travel at speeds over 200 miles per hour. Batnik’s father had created this special car to help people from their island get to the mainland and other islands faster. When Batnik's father was a boy, the only method of travel from one island to another was by ferry, and the trip often took hours. People who were sick and needed medical help from the mainland would have to endure the long crossing or not go at all because of delays. Batnik’s father loved his homeland and wanted to ease the burden on the people, so he created the water car.

When he showed the car to Batnik, Batnik’s father warned Batnik that the car should not be driven at the maximum speed on land or water because the engine could burst into flame. One day when his father was away, Batnik decided that he wanted to show the car to his friends. He drove it on the water, at first going only half the possible speed. Then, as his excitement grew, he increased his speed on the water and was nearing maximum speed. When he reached the land, he continued to accelerate. His exhilaration grew. Like the mythological Greek boy Icarus, who flew too close to the sun, Batnik forgot his father’s warning and pushed the gas pedal to the floor. When the car exceeded 200 miles per hour, it burst into flames.

If you have ever watched sea otters swim and play at your local zoo, you know they are extraordinary animals. But did you know they are under threat of extinction? That means no more sea otters in the wild and fewer in captivity. Sea otters have been on the Endangered Species List for over 45 years, but there are actions humans can take to protect them.

The Fur Trade

In the 1800s, sea otters were hunted for their fur. The fur trade between North America and Europe was booming, and sea otter fur was a popular option because of its thickness. By the mid-20th century, sea otters had been hunted to near extinction. Only 1,000−2,000 sea otters were believed to be living in the wild in 1929. Many people thought the species would soon become extinct. However, due to conservation efforts during the second half of the 20th century, sea otter populations recovered. The strengthening of the numbers of sea otters in the wild is often considered to be one of the greatest successes in marine conservation.

Despite their comeback, sea otters are sadly still an endangered species. This is due to predators and human impact on the sea otter's habitat.

Predators

Sea otters are threatened by other animals in the water and on land. Killer whales are one of the sea otter's main predators now that the seal and sea lion populations are declining. Sharks, sea lions, and eagles also pluck sea otters from the water while bears and coyotes will hunt them on land. Sea otters use their intelligence to outsmart some of their predators. They also use their sharp teeth to protect themselves.

One of my favorite paintings is Peace- Burial at sea because I love the style of Romanticism and I appreciate the techniques used in paintings from the 1800s. I have read that your painting was dedicated to your friend that had passed in a war. Some research that I’ve done is Expressive colorization imaginative landscapes and turbulent often violent marine paintings is how you gained fame. I’ve heard you served as an architectural draftsman and that you enrolled when you were only 14 years old. Since you were a professor what’s it like? Do you like having many jobs?
Your peace - Burial sea painting looks really realistic, The shadow and the colors that you chose are my favorite parts. I love how it has a feeling like it was made in the 1800s which it was, The colors are not varied but it still shows a message. I love how the light comes through and the brushstrokes. At first, when I saw your painting I thought it was boring because I couldn’t see anything special yet. In my opinion, I would rather see a 3-dimensional painting like when a real object is used. After seeing your painting a few times I could actually see the message. Since your friend had passed for your birthday present I would give you a mini ship because the painting includes a ship and it would be meaningful to him because it would remind him of his friend and I’ll add a picture of him to represent him and to remember him.
