Superhero 101: A Family Secret

Trace knew he would have to try to explain to his grandmother why he had missed her birthday party. He was dreading the conversation and the lie that he would inevitably have to tell. He thought telling her the truth would only open a Pandora’s box. He rang the doorbell, and his grandmother answered right away, like she had been waiting for him. He had called and told her he would try to come by sometime that day, but he had not given her a precise time.

She greeted him warmly, and he followed her into the kitchen where she had her customary jar of fresh-baked cookies ready for his indulgence. His grandmother was endearingly predictable. She had a daily routine and rarely deviated from it. Trace thought that given her lifestyle and penchant for routine and order, there was no way she would ever understand his life as Beetleman. He hated that he had no choice but to lie to his grandmother, whom he loved so much.

They sat at the kitchen table. His grandmother poured him an ice-cold glass of milk and filled a plate with her delicious chocolate chip cookies. Before he had a chance to apologize, his grandmother spoke. “Trace, I’m glad you called and came by today. I know you’re upset about missing my birthday party, but before you say anything about it, there is something I want to show you,” she said.

She went to a drawer and retrieved what appeared to be a large bracelet cuff made of silver. She handed it to Trace. He looked at it carefully. His grandmother moved his hands and pointed to something inscribed on the inside of the bracelet. “Look at this. It's what I wanted you to see,” she said as Trace read the words “Family First.” His heart sank when he read those words and recounted all the times that he had to sacrifice time with his family for his secret life.

His grandmother noticed his dejected expression. “Trace, I didn’t show you this to make you feel bad about your choices. I know that they aren’t always yours to make. This cuff belonged to your grandfather. He had those words inscribed because they are what kept him going and allowed him to make those same tough choices.”

Trace stared at this grandmother. What was she saying? His grandfather was a superhero too?

She continued, “Your grandfather loved helping people, just like you do. That’s where you got your gift—from him. Many times he had to miss family parties and outings because of his calling. But I always knew he did it for us—family first.”

Trace was astounded. He’d had no idea that his grandfather was a superhero; now he realized that he no longer had to lie to his grandmother. His parents had died when he was very young, and his grandparents had raised him. He recalled his grandfather missing his 10th birthday party and how upset and angry he had been at his grandfather. He had cried himself to sleep that night, wrongly thinking that he was not important to his grandfather.

Trace looked at the bracelet carefully, realizing that to him, it was as precious as the Hope diamond. He glanced up at his grandmother.

“His love for his family was his kryptonite,” his grandmother continued. “The only time he was weak was when you or I were in danger. He couldn’t bear the thought of anything happening to us after what happened to your parents.”

Imagine leaving your home, family and friends to move to a new place with a new language and culture. Even when migration is voluntary, it isn’t easy. From 1880 to 1920, as the Industrial Revolution took away jobs and caused overcrowding in Southern and Eastern Europe, over 20 million people immigrated to the US. These people emigrated from many countries, including Italy, Greece, Poland and Russia. In New York, where the population had doubled every decade, immigrants often worked in factories and lived in crowded apartments called tenements. Tenements typically lacked running water and windows. Disease spread quickly. In addition to harsh living conditions, immigrants often faced discrimination due to religious and cultural differences.

A Hero in Real Life An English proverb states, “ A hero is a man who is afraid to run away”. I agree with this proverb, because when you see a hero in a comic book, they have super cool back stories, are not afraid to fight, and stare danger in the face and not blink. They are not afraid of anything. That’s nice to look up to, but they are not real. Our definition of a hero is too much for one man to become, you can do something honorable, heroic, but you will never actually be a hero because it's too much, in real life. Heroes don’t just do it so they can get paid, or respect. What really determines whether someone is a hero is if they choose to do something about it in a bad situation. We have people that do heroic acts, for example, people putting their lives before others. Those people cannot be heroes because they get paid to do it, they are, firefighters, cops, and military, they get paid to help people, so they aren't considered a hero. Some definitions of heroes are people, who have noble qualities, and put the lives of others before their own lif

Ralf, Bruno’s father, was a soldier in the Great War (World War I), and is promoted to Commandant in the German Army by Hitler during World War II. He moves the family to Auschwitz, where he is in charge of the camp. Father is strict and intimidating, but expresses tenderness towards his family. He eventually consents to letting the family move back to Berlin, though he remains at Auschwitz to continue his duties for Hitler. A year after Bruno disappears, he figures out what happened to his son, and is destroyed by the realization. Lord of the Flies by William Golding is a book about the brutality and inhumanity that arises between children when they are deserted. In this book, at least 20 kids are stranded on an island with no grownups, only themselves. They have to learn how to survive without adults and chaos plays a big factor in this novel. Throughout the book they make rules and try to stay organized, but they ultimately cannot deal with themselves without the outside world and become leviathans. The conch, the beast, and the hunting show the boys descent into savagery.

The conch shows many themes all through this book. Though, the most frequent theme is how it did more harm than good. In the beginning of LOTF it shows how the conch created some ‘organization’ in the group. This conch is the only thing that keeps them from tearing each other apart. Even Jack Merridew, who was known for causing turmoil respected the conch, “He laid the conch with great care in the grass at his feet” (22). Yet, towards the end of the book, the conch caused a few bad things to happen. “The rock struck Piggy a glancing blow from chin to knee; the conch exploded into a thousand white fragments and ceased to exist” (181). In this quote, Roger “with a sense of delirious abandonment” pushed down the lever so that the rock would come down and cause a ruckus. I theorize that Roger had felt left out of all the madness happening below him, that he had to do something to put attention on him. This shows, that the conch causes lunacy. The attention was on Piggy because he had the conch, therefore because Roger did not have the conch he felt left out and craved attention, and it drove him to do something drastic. Whoever holds the conch always has the attention on them. Piggy says, “I got the conch, I got the right to speak” (44). In this quote, the boys let the fire go out and Piggy has something to say about it. No one likes to listen to Piggy, but because he has the conch it is only fair that they listen to him, since that is the rule. Ralph made the rule that whoever has the conch has the right to speak and everyone has to listen. Democracy was established with the conch. Overall, the conch caused quite a lot of bad things to happen.

Answers

Answer:

Explanation:In any group of children, it’s a given that some will be popular and powerful while others will be teased and rejected. In the real world, adults use their authority to control these divisions and maintain a balanced group dynamic. In Lord of the Flies, however, children must fend for themselves and elect their own leader—and Piggy, wise but scorned, is never seriously considered. Though Piggy is intelligent, rational, and innovative, he lacks the charisma and facility with language that both Ralph and Jack possess, traits that the book suggests play crucial roles in establishing their authority. Piggy may have the tactical smarts to be a good leader, but because he cannot convincingly act the role, he would not be able to marshal the boys if given the chance.

Although his contributions often go unappreciated, Piggy comes up with some of the most important innovations on the island. He sees the conch’s potential as a rallying device and firmly believes in its ability to keep operations running smoothly. He understands the importance of taking a census, which the other boys recognize only after the little boy with the mulberry birthmark goes missing and they can’t determine how many other littluns were killed in the fire. Piggy’s glasses provide the spark for the signal fire, metaphorically demonstrating how intellect can spark great progress. The scholarly, sensible Piggy is a born administrator, one who understands how to categorize and effectively utilize information. He also shows surprising personal strength, both in his ability to tolerate the cruel taunts from the other boys, including his supposed friend Ralph, as well as in his willingness to voice the unpleasant truth about the likelihood of rescue.

However, despite these admirable qualities, Piggy is resoundingly unsuccessful on those few occasions in which he does attempt to lead. He stubbornly holds onto outdated customs, such as the use of the conch, long after Ralph and Jack realize that the shell no longer holds sway over the group. Piggy insists on the rules even when the rules are clearly irrelevant, and this stickler attitude, along with his constant speechmaking and self-righteous complaining, drives people away. Ralph and Jack intuitively know how to rally followers, while Piggy seems to repel them relentlessly. Piggy is so unsuccessful, in fact, that he ultimately dies in the act of trying to lead: He is crushed while waving the conch, fruitlessly ordering others to listen to him.

Piggy’s total lack of success in a leadership role suggests that there are significant differences between a “leader” and a “thinker.” Ralph has an aura of poise and capability that wins him trust. His authority is rooted in personality rather than innovation—he relies on Piggy for that—and he understands the importance of rhetoric in winning followers. For example, he speaks in the language of rescue, playing into the boys’ deepest hopes and fears to bolster his hold over them. Jack wields power effectively as well, and boys are drawn to his glamour and charisma. Jack’s leadership is rooted in intimidation, which appeals to the boys once the island turns savage. The boys’ negative reaction to Piggy’s physical unattractiveness emphasizes the role external personas play in establishing command; the boys’ don’t so much reject Piggy because he is ugly, but because he does not know how to play the role of a leader.

Piggy’s failure as a leader points to an important theme of the novel: the failure of civilization in the face of savagery. Piggy represents rationalism and discipline, the very qualities that Jack himself identifies as making “the English . . . the best at everything.” Despite Jack’s initial support of rules and regulations, however, The Lord of the Flies suggests that absent the structures of school, family, and government, which prop up civilization, human beings will always choose anarchy and hedonism over law and order. Piggy represents the wild boys’ strongest link to civilization: Once he is killed, the hope of regaining it is lost forever, and only chaos remains.

There came a wind like a bugle;

So ominous did pass
We barred the windows and the doors
As from an emerald ghost;
The doom's electric moccasin
That very instant passed.
On a strange mob of panting trees,
And fences fled away,
And rivers where the houses ran
The living looked that day.

The flying tidings whirled.
