From July to December 1984, the Jacksons embarked on the Victory Tour, a concert tour of the United States and Canada.

The people who live in the Capitol and the districts are very different in terms of appearance, behavior, lifestyle, and concerns.

Appearance: Capitol residents are known for their extreme and often outrageous fashion choices.People in Capitol engage in a wide range of behaviors, including flamboyant displays of wealth, outrageous parties, and even strange and cruel forms of entertainment such as the Hunger Games themselves. The Capitol citizens' lifestyle is one of excess and luxury, with many living in large mansions and having access to a wide range of goods and services.Concerns: Capitol residents are frequently preoccupied with their own pleasures and status, with little regard for the suffering of others.

Answer:

Papa’s Waltz” is a poem written by Theodore Roethke (1908-1963).[1] The poem was first published during 1942 in Hearst Magazine and later in other collections, including the 1948 anthology The Lost Son and Other Poems.[2]

The poem takes place sometime during the poet's childhood and features a boy who loves his father, but is afraid of him. The boy is waltzing with his father, who is drunk and described as having battered knuckles and dirty palms. “My Papa’s Waltz” deals with themes of family, relationships, confliction, fear, and love. Like other pieces written by Roethke, “My Papa’s Waltz” draws from the poet's relationship with his father. “My Papa’s Waltz” is considered to be one of Roethke's best works. It fits into the wider context of Roethke's work due to the role the father plays in the narrative.

The last line of the poem, “Still clinging to your shirt,” indicates that the waltz and events that transpired had happened before and would happen again, reinforcing that the boy loves his father, despite the way he is treated.

From the Encyclopedia Britannica biography:
Benjamin Solomon Carson was born on Sept. 18, 1951, in Detroit, Mich. His parents divorced when he was eight, and he lived with his mother and brother first in Boston and then back in Detroit. He was a poor academic student in elementary school until his mother began to limit his television watching and had him read two books a week and write book reports.
In 2008, Pres. George W. Bush awarded Carson the Presidential Medal of Freedom. In 2009 a movie about Carson's life, Gifted Hands: The Ben Carson Story premiered on television. Carson was the author of an autobiography, Gifted Hands (1990), written with Cecil Murphey, as well as several motivational books.
In 1983 Carson moved to Perth, Australia, to work as a chief neurosurgery resident at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital. After a year spent gaining experience, he returned to Johns Hopkins, where he was named director of pediatric neurosurgery. There he earned a reputation for dealing with difficult cases using advanced surgical methods. In 1985 he performed his first successful hemispherectomy, a procedure that removes part of the brain in order to control chronic seizures. He also became known for his work separating conjoined twins, in 1987 completing the first successful separation of craniopagus twins (joined at the head).
From the Academy of Achievement autobiographical interview:
We had to stay in the house and read these books and our friends were outside and they were playing and they knew we couldn't come out. It seems like they would be making just that much more noise to torment us. But, I hated it for the first several weeks, but then all of a sudden, I started to enjoy it because we had no money, but between the covers of those books, I could go anyplace, I could be anybody, I could do anything. And, I began to learn how to use my imagination more because it doesn't really require a lot of imagination to watch television, but it does to read. You've got to take those letters and make them into words, and those words into sentences, and those sentences into concepts, and the more you do that, the more vivid your imagination becomes. And, I believe that's probably one of the reasons that you see that creative people tend to be readers, because they're exercising their mind.
I was reading about people in laboratories, pouring chemicals from a beaker into a flask and watching the steam rise, and completing electrical circuits, and discovering galaxies, and looking at microcosms in the microscope, and I just acquired so much knowledge, and I had put myself into those settings and I saw myself differently than everybody else in my environment who just wanted to get out of school so they could get some cool clothes and a cool car. And, I was looking down the pike and seeing myself as a scientist or a physician or something of that nature, and that was one of the things that sort of carried me through much of the ridicule and some of the hardships that a person would have to go through coming from my environment and going to medical school.
The thing that I am probably the most proud of is not all the medical accomplishments or honorary degrees or various boards and societies. I'm most proud of the 100,000-plus letters that I have from young people, throughout America and around the world, whose lives have been changed by reading one of my books, or seeing me on television, or an interview in a magazine, and recognizing that they have the ability to define their own lives. If that's the legacy that I leave, I'll be very happy.
I was talking to a friend of mine, who was a cardiothoracic surgeon, who was the chief of the division, and I said, "You guys operate on the heart in babies, how do you keep them from exsanguinating" and he says, "Well, we put them in hypothermic arrest." I said, "Is there any reason that -- if we were doing a set of Siamese twins that were joined at the head -- that we couldn't put them into hypothermic arrest, at the appropriate time, when we're likely to lose a lot of blood?" and he said, "No." I said, "Wow, this is great." Then I said, "Why am I putting my time into this? I'm not going to see any Siamese twins." So I kind of forgot about it, and lo and behold, two months later, along came these doctors from Germany, presenting this case of Siamese twins. And, I was asked for my opinion, and I then began to explain the techniques that should be used, and how we would incorporate hypothermic arrest, and everybody said "Wow! That sounds like it might work." And, my colleagues and I, a few of us went over to Germany. We looked at the twins. We actually put in scalp expanders, and five months later we brought them over and did the operation, and lo and behold, it worked.

This is my Commemorative speech for my English class.

The name Ella, meaning “a beautiful fairy woman” or “light”, was an exact description of my best friend, Ella Schriner. She has helped me through all of my ups and downs, and all of my good and bad days. We both suffer from mental disorders, and we both have experienced trauma in our lifetime, but that does not stop us from being there for eachother. A good friend can have many definitions but mine, I believe, is precise. A good friend is always there for you even when other people are not, and they comfort you through all of the rough days. They laugh, they cry, they hurt with you...and that is what really matters. Personally, I have really bad anxiety and minor depression because of all of the trauma I have experienced in my life. My father had left my mother and I when I was just born, and I would never forgive him; But Ella has shown me that I do not need a bad influence in my life; and that if he will forget about me, then I shall forget about him. Ella showed me how to stop stressing over something that will never come back. She has taught me how to be a better person, and therefore she is not considered my friend….she is my family. Ella, oh Ella, I wish I could explain to you how much you mean to me but I just cannot find the right words because there are so many to describe you with; but all I would like to say to you is….”Thank You”.

Answers

I love how you describe how close Ella is to your heart, and how you expressed your feelings towards Ella. I also love how you effortlessly transitioned to the conclusion. I think it looks amazing so far! There are a few grammar errors that you could easily fix, but other than that, I think it's great! Personally, I think you could change the part where you said "They laugh, they cry, they hurt with you" because in my opinion, it isn't gramatically correct. I also wanted to point out that the quotes around the "Thank you" you put in the end is not placed properly, but you could easily fix that. I hope this helps! <3

What do you think happened at the end of The Giver? Why? Justify your answer with evidence from the book.

Answers

Answer:

In my opinion, at the end of The Giver Jonas and Gabriel just fainted and before he closed his eyes he had memories that were getting recalled.

The reason why I strongly believe that Jonas was just remembering his past is because before Jonas closed his eyes, Jonas noticed the houses in the other community he reached to. When he went on the sled with Gabriel he perceived the memories he experienced during the training with the giver. That moment just returned the memories he had. Another moment they had before they fainted was when he saw the houses filled with people singing, laughing, enjoying. I am assuming that Jonas just had a theory and the voices simply echoed in his mind due to the state he was in. The reason why they passed out is probably because of their weakness. They didn't get a good source of good and warmth and were very tired of travelling form one community to another. In conclusion, Jonas and Gabriel just passed out and the people on the other community will probably take care of them and give them the warmth the other community didn't. Hope this helps!

Which sentence contains an example of an oxymoron?

A. She ran up the steps like a gazelle and disappeared into the house.
B. There was a sharp softness to the accumulating thunderclouds.
C. The leaves danced about in the tree, happy the fall wind had set them free.
D. Her summer vacation went by in the blink of an eye.

Answers

A oxymoron is a figure of speech in which apparently contradictory terms appear in conjunction. In this case the oxymoron would be B. There was a sharp softness to the accumulating thunderclouds.

An oxymoron is a figure of speech/figurative language that combines two contradictory terms (the terms which are in contrast).

For example:

Jumbo shrimp

Deafening silence

Bittersweet

An oxymoron can create a dramatic effect, entertain the reader, or present words in a new way.

The sentence that contains an example of an oxymoron is:

Option B. There was a sharp softness to the accumulating thunderclouds.

The words sharp and softness are contradictory, as they have opposite meanings. They create an oxymoron that describes the paradoxical nature of the clouds.

The other sentences do not contain oxymorons, but other figures of speech, such as:

Option A

This sentence contains a simile, which is a comparison using the words like or as.

Option C

This sentence contains a personification, which is giving human qualities to non-human things.

Option D

This sentence contains an idiom, which is an expression that has a figurative meaning different from its literal meaning.

We use the simple past tense to talk about actions that happened at a specific time in the past. That is what we have in sentences 1, 3, and 6.

We use the present perfect tense to talk about actions that have begun in the past and continue into the present. That is the case for sentence 2.

We can use "would" to refer to hypothetical situations, that is, something that will not happen but that we would like to happen. That is what we have in sentences 4 and 8.

We use the past perfect tense to talk about actions that happened in the past before other actions. That is the case in sentence 5.

We use the simple present tense to talk about habitual actions. However, in sentence 7, it is being used to talk about a wish concerning the future.

We use the future continuous to refer to actions that will happen at a specific time in the future, such as in sentence 9.

Finally, we use the simple future to refer to actions that will take place in the future. In sentence 10, it describes a future consequence of a present action.
