                               HISTORY OF GREEK DRAMA

Early Greek theatre started around the 6th Century in the capital Athens with tragic plays being done at religious gatherings. From tragic plays, there was a shift to comedy. The earliest known playwrights such as Sophocles and Aristophanes were the 'founding fathers' of Greek drama.

Tragic plays were popular and one of the first genres of plays done in Greece then partly because of the rituals which were carried out in the worship of Dionysos which included sacrifice of goats and a ceremony that involved the wearing of masks, drinking rites that most times had worshippers losing control of themselves and behaving strangely, as if they were another person just like the way dramatists/actors were known to do.

Infact, Dionysos was referred to as the god of Greek theatre as it was in the worship of the god that Greek drama began. The ritual of the dance and singing was achievable because of an "aulos player" which made use of rhythms.

A theatre back then was in an open space that had beautiful acoustics and could hold a large number of male spectators. Early plays were free to attend and the plots of a tragic drama was most times based on Greek myths and legends. There was always a sense of good and bad, right and wrong, light and darkness and because of this constant conflict, there was no violence on the stage because it was not allowed and even the death of characters were spoken offstage and not witnessed by the audience.

Performers on the stage could act the characters of gods and much later, he would speak to the leader of the chorus who were all male and they would only sing and dance but not speak. The word "thespian" was gotten from Thespis and he was the one credited with the above innovation.

A play could only have a maximum of three actors on stage and because of this, one performer could take on multiple roles at the same time.

Roman mosaic depicting actors and an aulos player (House of the Tragic Poet, Pompeii).

The architectural form of theatre in Rome has been linked to later, more well-known examples from the 1st century BC to the 3rd Century AD.[1] The theatre of ancient Rome referred to as a period of time in which theatrical practice and performance took place in Rome has been linked back even further to the 4th century BC, following the state’s transition from monarchy to republic.[1] Theatre during this era is generally separated into genres of tragedy and comedy, which are represented by a particular style of architecture and stage play, and conveyed to an audience purely as a form of entertainment and control.[2] When it came to the audience, Romans favored entertainment and performance over tragedy and drama, displaying a more modern form of theatre that is still used in contemporary times.[2]

'Spectacle' became an essential part of an everyday Romans expectations when it came to theatre.[1] Some works by Plautus, Terence, and Seneca the Younger that survive to this day, highlight the different aspects of Roman society and culture at the time, including advancements in Roman literature and theatre.[1] Theatre during this period of time would come to represent an important aspect of Roman society during the republican and imperial periods of Rome.[1]

Origins of Roman theatre

Rome was founded as a monarchy under Etruscan rule, and remained as such throughout the first two and a half centuries of its existence. Following the expulsion of Rome's last king, Lucius Tarquinius Superbus, or "Tarquin the Proud," circa 509 BC, Rome became a republic and was henceforth led by a group of magistrates elected by the Roman people. It is believed that Roman theatre was born during the first two centuries of the Roman Republic, following the spread of Roman rule into a large area of the Italian Peninsula, circa 364 BC.

Following the devastation of widespread plague in 364 BC, Roman citizens began including theatrical games as a supplement to the Lectisternium ceremonies already being performed, in a stronger effort to pacify the gods. In the years following the establishment of these practices, actors began adapting these dances and games into performances by acting out texts set to music and simultaneous movement.

As the era of the Roman Republic progressed, citizens began including professionally performed drama in the eclectic offerings of the ludi (celebrations of public holidays) held throughout each year—the largest of these festivals being the Ludi Romani, held each September in honor of the Roman god Jupiter.[3] It was as a part of the Ludi Romani in 240 BC that author and playwright Livius Adronicus became the first to produce translations of Greek plays to be performed on the Roman stage.[4][5][6]

Prior to 240 BC, Roman contact with northern and southern Italian cultures began to influence Roman concepts of entertainment.[7] The early Roman stage was dominated by: Phylakes (a form of tragic parody that arose in Italy during the Roman Republic from 500 to 250 BC), Atellan farces (or a type of comedy that depicted the supposed backwards thinking of the southeastern Oscan town of Atella; a form of ethnic humor that arose around 300 BC), and Fescennine verses (originating in southern Etruria).[7] Furthermore, Phylakes scholars have discovered vases depicting productions of Old Comedy (e.g. by Aristophanes, a Greek playwright), leading many to ascertain that such Comedic plays were presented at one point to an Italian, if not "Latin-Speaking" audience as early as the 4th century.[7] This is supported by the fact that Latin was an essential component to Roman Theatre.[7] From 240 BC to 100 BC, Roman theatre had been introduced to a period of literary drama, within which classical and post-classical Greek plays had been adapted to Roman theatre.[7] From 100 BC till 476 AD, Roman entertainment began to be captured by circus-like performances, spectacles, and miming while remaining allured by theatrical performances.[

Figurative language is when you use a word or phrase that does not have its normal everyday, literal meaning. ... There are a few different ways to use figurative language, including metaphors, similes, personification and hyperbole. See the table below for some figurative language examples and definitions.

Answer and Explanation:

There are two ways of using language- a literal and figurative way. When we use words and phrases, it is called the literal language. However, when our words or phrases depend upon the context in which we have used them, it has called figurative language.Simile: is a figure in which we compare things. Furthermore, use the words “like” and “as” to make the comparison.

For example, She is peaceful as a dove.

He is cunning as a fox.She shines like a diamond.

Metaphor: It is quite similar to simile, but we compare things directly in this figure of speech. It shows the similarities between two things.

For example, Love is a war.

She is a gem.Personification:

In this figure of speech, we personify a non-human entity as a human.

For example, The bus died on the road.

The plants were begging for care.

Hyperbole: is used to emphasize the importance of something and used to exaggerate the lateral phrase.

For example: As she is dieting for two months, she has gotten as thin as a toothpick.

His shoes are older than the hills.

Onomatopoeia: This figure of speech is usually used by a writer to create imagery in their writings. Furthermore, it involves all five senses.

For example, She was thwarting with fear.

He punches him with a thud.

Don't worry!

One of the causes and effects of having more technologies in the future is that it could take over people's jobs. The effect of this would be more homeless people on the streets and more robberies. We know this because if you don't get a job, you won't get paid ad without money you can't afford food but you need food to survive. Because of this, you're bound to steal at one point.

Another problem would be that is something were to go wrong with the technology and people used it for important things, such as water supplies or farming, you wouldn't have those important supplies

In the excerpt from Harrison Bergeron by Kurt Vonnegut what is ironic about this excerpt?

Answers

Answer:

“He is a genius and an athlete, is under-handicapped, and should be regarded as extremely dangerous.”

Explanation:

The options to the question are:

“If you see this boy,” said the ballerina, “do not—I repeat, do not—try to reason with him.”

“He is a genius and an athlete, is under-handicapped, and should be regarded as extremely dangerous.”

“My God—” said George, “that must be Harrison!”

“Gee—I could tell that one was a doozy,” said Hazel.

Irony can be defined as the state of affairs that is contradictory opposite to what one would normally expect.

The ironic thing about the excerpt from Harrison Bergeron by Kurt Vonnegut is option B because it is contradictory for someone that is considered a genius and an athlete to be looked upon as "under-handicapped" and "regarded as extremely dangerous".

And I watered it in fears, Night and morning with my tears; And I sunned it with smiles, And with soft deceitful wiles. And it grew both day and night, Till it bore an apple bright. And my foe beheld it shine. And he knew that it was mine, And into my garden stole When the night had veiled the pole; In the morning glad I see My foe outstretched beneath the tree. Why are similes hard?

Answers

Answer:

there just like life

Explanation:

I guess (:

Once you understand what is counts as a simile and what counts as a metaphor it would become more easier.

A simile is a comparison of at least two things using the words "like" or "as".

For example, the usage of a simile can include:

Tom is like a mountain goat, leaping from one rock to another.

Note the comparison of Tom to a mountain goat, and the usage of "like", or being similar too.

Another example can be:

James was as brave as a lion, strong as a bear, leapt like a gazelle, and as smart as Einstein.

Note the comparison of James to many different animals as well as a famous person.

The next thing that you should be learning is Metaphor, which is kind of related to similes.

Metaphors is a comparison, but without using the words "like" or "as"

For example, the usage of a metaphor can include:

Her long hair flowed down like a river.

While "like" or "as" was not used, her hair was compared to a river.

When you understand this concept it would be very very useful, especially when writing essays. Most of the time you may need to compare things, such as products, ideas/beliefs, and even different civilizations within a time period (specifically in history class). Understanding how to use similes & metaphors can help enhance your writing.

(on the rule of the road)what are the matters in which we may be as free as we like?

Answers

Answer:

"It is an accommodation of interests. In matters which do not touch anybody else's liberty, of course, I may be as free as I like. If I choose to go down the road in a dressing- gown who shall say me nay? You have liberty to laugh at me, but I have liberty to be indifferent to you"

Explanation:

From the book On The Rule Of The Road by A.G Gardner, he believes that "each person must have some limits on his or her freedom in order to enjoy the freedom that comes from social order" which shows in order for the liberties of everyone to be sustained, then the liberties of everyone must be restricted.

However, individuals are allowed to be as free as they like in matters that do not infringe on someone else's liberty as Gardner said "I may be as free as I like. If I choose to go down the road in a dressing- gown who shall say me nay? You have liberty to laugh at me, but I have liberty to be indifferent to you".

Anita Magri will turn age 65 in August 2020. Anita intends to enroll in Original Medicare Part A and Part B. She would also like to enroll in a Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plan. Anita’s older neighbor Mel has told her about the Medigap Part F plan in which he is enrolled. It not only provides foreign travel emergency benefits but also covers his Medicare Part B deductible. Anita comes to you for advice. What should you tell her?

Answers

Answer:

C). You are sorry to disappoint Anita but a Medigap Part F plan is no longer available to those who turn age 65 after January 1, 2020. Anita might instead consider other Medigap plans that offer foreign travel benefits but do not cover the Part B deductible.

Explanation:

As per the Medigap plan F, Anita is not eligible to be enrolled in part F of the plan as she would be turning 65 after the deadline i.e. January 1, 2020. Thus, It would be very apologetic to disappoint her but she should rather be advised to look for some other Medigap plans that would be able to offer her the benefits of foreign travel but without covering up the deductible part B. Therefore, option C displays the correct advise that Anita must be given to choosing the right Medigap plan for her.

Sir Gawain who was the nephew of King Arthur and one of his best and most loyal knights who prided himself on being chivalrous. He was the hero on a quest but by the end of the quest he was a humbled man who did not believe that he can ever be the man he wished to be.

Bertilak's wife was a temptress who tried to seduce Sir Gawain three times during his stay at the castle where he spends Christmas. She is presented as a beautiful and intelligent woman.

Morgan Le Faye was the trickster who controlled the events of the poem in the hope that she could cause much discord for her half-brother King Arthur and his kingdom.

When deciding whether to live in the country or the city, first consider the pros and cons of living in each environment.
Which of the following points of comparison would most effectively support your thesis?

A.)Pace of life, cost of living, convenience

B.)Apartments, condominiums, townhomes

C.)Small towns, farmsteads, ranches

D.)Subways, trains, taxi cabs

Answers

The correct answer is A.) Pace of life, cost of living, convenience

Explanation:

The purpose of a comparison and contrast essay is to explain the differences and similarities of two elements. This means the points of comparison, and contrast should apply to the two elements and support the thesis.

In the case presented if you need to compare living in the country vs living in the city, your points should be general enough to apply to the city and the country. Also, they should help you to explain common points and differences. According to this, the best option is "Pace of life, cost of living, convenience" because these points are general enough to apply to both context and help you support the thesis. For example, you can explain the cost of living is higher in cities, which is a key difference or contrast. Also, elements such as taxi, small towns, ranches, or townhomes only apply to one of the elements and due to this, they cannot be used to analyze both elements together.

Prompt: Write an argumentative editorial that argues for or against young people’s ability to initiate positive change in their communities. Use the prompt to answer the questions. What will you create? What will be the topic? Who will read your writing? What is the purpose of your writing?

Answers

Answer:

1. A text will be created showing the capacity of young people in our society. 2. The topic will be the ability of young people to better their community. 3. Those who will read my writing will be young people and adults. 4. The objective is to show how we discourage and diminish the importance of young people in society.

Explanation:

Youth is a very fast phase in our life. We all go through it or we will go through it, and we know how this moment full of uncertainties and contradictions is essential for changes and evolutions.

Young people have strength, will, cleverness and courage. These characteristics are capable of leading a society to success. That's because they are bold, have big plans and have nothing to stop them from reaching them. All this enthusiasm has the full potential to be used in favor of society and to achieve improvements that adults are not able to seek, out of fear, or for some reason that holds them back. Adult responsibility is something that limits the possibilities of doing society good and that is why we must have bold, intelligent and well-developed young people to make our society grow.

However, as we reach adulthood, we begin to think that all the fire and desire of young people is too dangerous and should be discouraged, siminuated, despised and prevented. This prevents change from taking place and substitutes people with great potential. We must teach our young people to act responsibly and rationally. So we will use the best of them for the future of the entire population.

Answer and Explanation:

The young generation’s mind is open up to new and innovative ideas. They are more active and in touch with the new technology, thus have diverse views.

When it comes up to writing, a new generation is more vigilant. Their ideas are far more than vast. As the world is becoming Global Village, the writing produced by them would have something new. As the world is advancing, now there are proper institutes to learn innovative writing. The institute offers activities and grounds for writing. The demand for writing is getting high each day. There are several platforms of writing available for writers. , Our social media nowadays is whole about expressing through pictures and writings.

The young generation is more interested in conveying their ideas. Being a part of the young generation, I would be more focused on the new generation problems. The generation gap has let them hollow and empty how an individual is struggling on their own.

My writing would be helped them to understand the struggle of every person. The readers of those writings would mainly be comprised of the young generation. My writings' primary purpose would be too aware of the people where we are leaning towards. Moreover, it will question them + How this world’s distance is getting reduced, but the distance between societies and families increases.

Citing specific textual evidence from The Depravity of Human Nature from Saint Augustine's Confessions, what leads him to the conclusion that mankind is depraved and sinful, and do you think that Augustine's outlook on human nature was affected the historical context in which he was living? If so, how so, and if not, why not?

Answers

Answer:

Saint Augustine concludes that society is depraved and sinful because individuals cling to wrong and evil beliefs, in addition to surrendering lust, ambition and turning away from the scriptures and what is right before God.

I do not believe that Saint Augustine's perspective has affected the historical context in which he lived, because the perspective that he presents is more focused on self-analysis, where he bases his worldview with himself as the main representative.

Explanation:

"Confessions" by Saint Augustine is an autobiographical book, in which the author observes himself and reports his sins as a confession to God, in order to achieve his benevolence and forgiveness. In this book, Augustine uses himself to report a depraved and sinful nature, he reveals that he trusted false beliefs, put God in the background, moved away from the scriptures, joined the evil one and even gave himself up to lust. He also recounts his conversion and all the philosophies he adopted before that.
