Identify the sentence fragment.
Group of answer choices

I drove twenty miles yesterday.

In a severe thunderstorm in an effort to get home in time to watch my favorite program.

My electricity was not working when I arrived at home.

Answers

Answer 1

Answer:

D. In a severe thunderstorm in an effort to get home in time to watch my favorite program.

Explanation:

Sentence fragments usually don't have a verb or subject. For B, sub is I, verb is drove. For C, sub is electricity and I, verb is was working and arrived. A is an interesting one, but we don't have to bother figuring out the subject and verb cause option D is filled with nothing but prep phrases, automatically making that our answer.

Which word is spelled with one or more silent consonants?
A. cosmopolitan
B. hydropower
C. onslaught
D. sophisticated

Answers

Answer: Sorry I'm late it is onslaught.

Explanation:

The word that is spelled with one or more silent consonants is  sophisticated. The correct option is D.

What is consonant?

Consonants are a type of speech sound produced by blocking or restricting airflow in the vocal tract.

There are 21 consonant sounds in English, which are divided into groups based on their manner of articulation (how they are produced) and place of articulation (where in the vocal tract they are produced).

In English, consonants are the basic building blocks of words. Most English words contain at least one consonant, and some are entirely composed of consonants (e.g. "shh", "psst").

A sophisticated word is one that is spelt with one or more silent consonants. Because the letters "ph" in this word make a "f," the "s" and first "h" are silent.

Thus, the correct option is D.

The public library near Lizz’s school has decided to remove some books from its shelves because they contain controversial information. This is a letter she has written to the head librarian to show why she is against this idea.

Jackson, OK 97555
March 13, 2013

Mrs. J.R. Sullivan
Jackson Public Library
3522 Haas Avenue
Jackson, OK 97555

Dear Mrs. Sullivan:

I recently heard that the library plans to remove To Kill a Mockingbird and The Great Gatsby from its shelves. This made me very sad because those are two of my favorite novels.

In a free society, people need to have access to information without someone in charge of deciding what is okay to read. Otherwise, isn’t the freedom of the press in the First Amendment worthless?

Every year, the American Library Association celebrates Banned Books Week. This event calls attention to books that were banned or challenged at some point during history. The ALA wants to show that it is important for people to have access to unpopular viewpoints. This organization feels it is harmful to all of society to censor information.

Many of the books that were challenged were never banned because teachers, librarians, and booksellers across the country defended them. Won’t you join in the fight to make sure these American classics are available for people to read for years to come? Make the writers of the Constitution proud.

Sincerely,

Lizz

How does the information about the ALA's Banned Books Week and the First Amendment help support Lizz's thesis in this letter?
A.
It includes information about authors.
B.
It includes the opinion of experts.
C.
It discusses laws that need to change.
D.
It shows why these books were banned.

Answers

The details of the ALA's Banned Books Week and the First Amendment support Lizz's position in this letter as B. Expert advice is also included.

What transpires throughout Banned Book Week?

Readers have the chance to express their censorship concerns during Banned Books Week, to celebrate free speech, and to educate their communities about the value of intellectual freedom. These are some things you can do to prevent censorship, keep books available in libraries, and support the right to read freely.

How does banning books circumvent the First Amendment?

According to David L. Hudson Jr., a professor at Belmont University College of Law and an authority on First Amendment law, "book prohibitions violate the First Amendment because they deny children or students the ability to receive information and ideas."

On Women's Right to Vote

(Section 1) Friends and fellow citizens: I stand before you tonight under indictment for the alleged crime of having voted at the last presidential election, without having a lawful right to vote. It shall be my work this evening to prove to you that in thus voting, I not only committed no crime, but, instead, simply exercised my citizen's rights, guaranteed to me and all United States citizens by the National Constitution, beyond the power of any state to deny.

(Section 2)The preamble of the Federal Constitution says:

"We, the people of the United States, in order to form a more perfect union, establish justice, insure domestic tranquillity, provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare, and secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America."

(Section 3) It was we, the people; not we, the white male citizens; nor yet we, the male citizens; but we, the whole people, who formed the Union. And we formed it, not to give the blessings of liberty, but to secure them; not to the half of ourselves and the half of our posterity, but to the whole people - women as well as men. And it is a downright mockery to talk to women of their enjoyment of the blessings of liberty while they are denied the use of the only means of securing them provided by this democratic-republican government - the ballot.

(Section 4) For any state to make sex a qualification that must ever result in the disfranchisement of one entire half of the people, is to pass a bill of attainder, or, an ex post facto law, and is therefore a violation of the supreme law of the land. By it the blessings of liberty are forever withheld from women and their female posterity.

(Section 5)To them this government has no just powers derived from the consent of the governed. To them this government is not a democracy. It is not a republic. It is an odious aristocracy; a hateful oligarchy of sex; the most hateful aristocracy ever established on the face of the globe; an oligarchy of wealth, where the rich govern the poor. An oligarchy of learning, where the educated govern the ignorant, or even an oligarchy of race, where the Saxon rules the African, might be endured; but this oligarchy of sex, which makes father, brothers, husband, sons, the oligarchs over the mother and sisters, the wife and daughters, of every household - which ordains all men sovereigns, all women subjects, carries dissension, discord, and rebellion into every home of the nation.

Webster, Worcester, and Bouvier all define a citizen to be a person in the United States, entitled to vote and hold office.

(Section 6) The only question left to be settled now is: Are women persons? And I hardly believe any of our opponents will have the hardihood to say they are not. Being persons, then, women are citizens; and no state has a right to make any law, or to enforce any old law, that shall abridge their privileges or immunities. Hence, every discrimination against women in the constitutions and laws of the several states is today null and void,..."
