He led the Olympia Orchestra around 1906 and, as Jelly Roll Morton mentioned, formed the first Dixieland combo in 1908 by dropping violin, bass, and guitar, while adding piano to drums, trombone, clarinet, and cornet. After 1914, Bolden spent years on the road performing in vaudeville, eventually settling in Chicago in the 1920s. There is a rumor that he turned down the opportunity to make the first jazz recording. Unfortunately, he did not record during his prime years, only recording in 1926 when his health was in decline and his best playing was behind him. Jazz artists employed improvisation; classical musicians did not. This is one of the key distinctions between jazz and classical music.
