Southerners expected that Lincoln planned to attempt to free slaves, which was one of the primary reasons states like South Carolina withdrew after the official appointment of 1860.

These feelings of dread worked out with the death of the thirteenth amendment. Now that the South planned to rejoin the Union, they would be helpless before Lincoln which many could have done without. To that end John Wilkes Booth, a Confederate supporter, chose to kill Lincoln.
