While hurricanes are known as typhoons and cyclones in different parts of the world, they are all the same type of storm. These tropical cyclones all form the same way. They form above warm ocean waters near the equator and use warm, moist air as fuel. This fuel allows them to continue to grow and rotate at faster speeds until they hit land. Once they hit land, they usually slow down because they no longer have the warm, moist air to fuel them. Although they slow down, they still move at speeds that allow them to cause great damage.
Hurricane Irma is a recent storm that touched down in the United States, forming from a tropical wave in the Atlantic Ocean. This wave lead to rain showers and thunderstorms, and eventually, the showers and thunderstorms became organized into a system. This created a low pressure area, allowing a hurricane to form. Hurricane Irma continued to grow as it moved across the ocean. By the time it hit the Caribbean, it was a Category 4 hurricane. It continued to change in size and speed. Finally, it touched down in Florida as a Category 4 hurricane before gradually weakening in power and dying in Missouri.
Hurricanes are a severe weather occurrence. Some hurricanes stay small, while others become more powerful until they touch down on land and start to lose power. However, hurricanes can still be catastrophic once they make landfall. Because scientists have learned so much about how hurricanes form, they are able to monitor them and warn people to take precautions if a hurricane hits in their area.
Based on the information in the text, why is it important for scientists to inform the public about the category of a hurricane that is going to hit a specific area?
Question 1 options:
Scientists can warn the public about how powerful the hurricane will be and how much damage it may cause, which allows people to prepare.
Scientists need to warn the public about the category so that the people from the area it hits can compare it to other hurricanes they have experienced.
Scientists travel to different sites of hurricanes and want to inform the people from the area that they are collecting information about the hurricane.
Scientists collect information about each category of hurricane and want to learn about the effects of the hurricane from the people in the community.

Dramatic irony is when the _______________ (or the reader) seems to know more about an event, a situation or conversation than the characters. It creates tremendous ______________ with the text.
Answer: Audience; Suspense
Explanation: Readers are also considered the audience of a story, because they're the ones witnessing/reading the story and what's transpiring. Dramatic Irony is suspenseful because we know what happened or what's going to happen and it builds tension when waiting for what's going to happen to happen or waiting for the narrator to realize what we already know.

Many cities and towns have community gardens--places the city council sets aside for people to rent garden space and plant a few veggies or flowers. The question, though, is whether they are totally useless or not. To evaluate this, it is important to look at how much time and how much money are needed to set the garden up, what it takes to maintain the gardens, and whether people use them and benefit from them. When you look at the big picture, community gardens in most large cities are awesome. However, as someone who visits the community garden in my small town every now and then, let me tell you, it is pricey, dicey, and seedy but not in a good way, a real waste of space.
Usually, city gardens need to be built from scratch. That means cities must buy and haul in all the materials for the garden beds. If these are raised beds. They must buy bricks or lumber. Sometimes organizers of community gardens will get lucky. Someone will donate materials to them. They still must have it moved on-site, though. Also, many community gardens require loads and loads of dirt and fertilizer, plus, an irrigation system. It takes a lot to make a garden from zilch. The costs can far outweigh the benefits in small communities. Larger cities can make this work. They have more options for materials. They also have more people using the completed garden.
The next important thing to look at is how the community keeps up the garden. Often community gardens require their renters to spend a certain amount of time weeding and watering the garden. While this might sound good in theory, my experience is that people rarely follow through. They usually start out doing a bang-up job in the spring during planting time, but then their lives get more and more swamped, so they disregard this commitment. If a city is large enough to have someone on site. Maintenance is not as big of a deal. However, in my small community garden, no one is ever around. In fact, weeds are the reigning “vegetable” growing in our community garden. This makes our town's community garden a waste of time.

What are two examples of figurative language in these lines? What does each mean?
This rare form, called beryllium-10, is created when
cosmic rays from space hit the rock and split apart larger
atoms of oxygen and nitrogen. You might say that when this
happens, the rock is getting sunburned. As long as the rock
is sitting out in the open, the cosmic rays are hitting it and
beryllium-10 is forming in the outer 2 or so centimeters of
the rock. But while the rock is buried underground—before
running water chews it out of the desert floor—it’s shaded
from cosmic rays, so no beryllium-10 develops.
Answer:
If I'm not wrong sentence two " You might say that when this
happens, the rock is getting sunburned." and sentence four "But while the rock is buried underground—before running water chews it out of the desert floor—it’s shaded from cosmic rays, so no beryllium-10 develops."
is the the two examples showing personification.
Explanation:
In this sentence: "You might say that when this
happens, the rock is getting sunburned." a rock cannot get sunburned so it's using personification giving human things to non-humans.
and in this sentence: But while the rock is buried underground—before
running water chews it out of the desert floor—it’s shaded
from cosmic rays, so no beryllium-10 develops." It shows personification because it says "before running water chews it out of the desert floor" and we know that water can't chew.
