Excerpt from
The Magic of Oz
By L. Frank Baum

Having walked for an hour or two through the pretty country that is ruled by King Bud, Kiki Aru decided he could travel faster and see more as a bird, so he transformed himself into a white dove and visited the great city of Nole and saw the King's palace and gardens and many other places of interest. Then he flew westward into the Kingdom of Ix, and after a day in Queen Zixi's country went on westward into the Land of Ev. Every place he visited he thought was much more pleasant than the saucer-country of the Hyups, and he decided that when he reached the finest country of all he would settle there and enjoy his future life to the utmost.
In the land of Ev he resumed his own shape again, for the cities and villages were close together and he could easily go on foot from one to another of them.
Toward evening he came to a good Inn and asked the inn-keeper if he could have food and lodging.
"You can if you have the money to pay," said the man, "otherwise you must go elsewhere."
This surprised Kiki, for in the Land of Oz they do not use money at all, everyone being allowed to take what he wishes without price. He had no money, therefore, and so he turned away to seek hospitality elsewhere. Looking through an open window into one of the rooms of the Inn, as he passed along, he saw an old man counting on a table a big heap of gold pieces, which Kiki thought to be money. One of these would buy him supper and a bed, he reflected, so he transformed himself into a magpie and, flying through the open window, caught up one of the gold pieces in his beak and flew out again before the old man could interfere. Indeed, the old man who was robbed was quite helpless, for he dared not leave his pile of gold to chase the magpie, and before he could place the gold in a sack in his pocket the robber bird was out of sight and to seek it would be folly.
Kiki Aru flew to a group of trees and, dropping the gold piece to the ground, resumed his proper shape, and then picked up the money and put it in his pocket.
"You'll be sorry for this!" exclaimed a small voice just over his head.
Kiki looked up and saw that a sparrow, perched upon a branch, was watching him.
"Sorry for what?" he demanded.
"Oh, I saw the whole thing," asserted the sparrow. "I saw you look in the window at the gold, and then make yourself into a magpie and rob the poor man, and then I saw you fly here and make the bird into your former shape. That's magic, and magic is wicked and unlawful; and you stole money, and that's a still greater crime. You'll be sorry, some day."
"I don't care," replied Kiki Aru, scowling.
"Aren't you afraid to be wicked?" asked the sparrow.
"No, I didn't know I was being wicked," said Kiki, "but if I was, I'm glad of it. I hate good people. I've always wanted to be wicked, but I didn't know how."
"Haw, haw, haw!" laughed someone behind him, in a big voice; "that's the proper spirit, my lad! I'm glad I've met you; shake hands."
The sparrow gave a frightened squeak and flew away.

Read the following segment from a paper Ali wrote:

The Yellowstone volcano is one of the largest volcanoes in the world, and it’s located next to Grand Teton National Park. “Sometimes [Yellowstone] erupts with lava flow, but once or twice every million years, it erupts very violently,” says Ilya Bindeman, professor of geological sciences at the University of Oregon. Unlike Yellowstone, there are no volcanoes in the Grand Tetons. The Grand Tetons are mountains that resulted from uplift along a tectonic fault line, and, according to the Wyoming State Geological Survey, are among the youngest mountains in the Rockies.

What was likely missing from Ali’s research process? Why?

A.
Credible sources; because Bindeman does not appear reliable.
B.
A narrow topic; because the paragraph talks about two different topics.
C.
Multiple avenues of exploration; because the paragraph contains few facts, indicating little research.
D.

What are volcanoes?

Volcanoes are geological structures that are formed when magma, ash, and gas escape from the Earth's crust. This molten rock material is released through a vent or opening in the Earth's surface, which can be located on land or under the ocean. Volcanoes can be classified into two types: shield and composite.

Shield volcanoes have gentle slopes and are formed by the accumulation of thin lava flows, while composite volcanoes have steep slopes and are formed by the accumulation of thick layers of ash and lava. Volcanoes can also produce several types of hazards, including pyroclastic flows, lahars, and ash clouds, which can cause destruction to the surrounding environment and pose a threat to human life. Despite the hazards, volcanoes also provide benefits such as fertile soil and geothermal energy.

A Giant of a Man

A big burly man dressed as a lumberjack stands next to a big ox and holds an ax over his shoulder.

Back in 1913, I worked on one of Paul Bunyan’s famous crews. Let me tell you, there are many good tales about the legendary Paul Bunyan, but they don’t tell half the story. He was a giant of a man who could pick up four horses with their load of logs and turn them around on the road. He led crews of us loggers to hew trees and chop them into logs during the days when this country was growing fast.

Feeding Bunyan’s crews of ravenous loggers was a big job. Paul’s cook Big Joe wanted a griddle to cook pancakes. So, Big Ole, the blacksmith, made an immense griddle. The pancake batter was stirred in machines like concrete mixers. It was poured on the griddle with cranes.

One year, everything got buried during the Winter of the Deep Snow. It was quite a predicament. Paul dealt with the challenge by digging down to find the tops of the tall pine trees and lowering his loggers to chop logs. His blue ox, Babe, wore snowshoes to haul the wood to the surface of the snow.

Paul had a cow named Lucy. She had the appetite of a wolf. In the winter of the Deep Snow, the loggers gave Lucy a pair of Babe’s old snowshoes and green goggles. They turned her out to graze in the snow. She learned to run in the snowshoes, and she ran all over North America.

One of Paul’s loggers took a load of logs down the Mississippi River for Paul. When the logs were delivered, they were the wrong logs. Paul had to get them back upstream. Driving logs upstream is impossible, but an impossible job never stopped Paul. He fed Babe salt and took him to the upper Mississippi to drink. Babe drank the river dry, and the logs traveled up the river faster than they had gone down.

Paul could solve problems like no one else I ever knew or you ever heard of. In the Winter of the Blue Snow, Shot Gunderson was in charge of the Big Tadpole River area. He chopped his logs so that they landed in a lake. He planned to move them in the spring. To his surprise, when he tried to move the logs, he discovered the lake had no outlet to the river. He thought the whole winter’s work was lost. But Paul was always clever. He came up with an ingenious idea. He called in Sourdough Sam, a cook who made everything out of sourdough except the coffee. Paul ordered him to mix enough sourdough to fill the big water tank. Then he hitched Babe the Blue Ox to the tank and dumped the sourdough into the lake. Dough rises. As Sam said, it “riz” and pushed the logs over the hills that surrounded the lake. They rolled all the way to the river. Today a lake in Minnesota is named “Sourdough Lake.”

Every process, from writing to cooking, bike riding, and learning to use a new cell phone, will get significantly easier with practice.

Just as you need a recipe, ingredients, and proper tools to cook a delicious meal, you also need a plan, resources, and adequate time to create a good written composition. In other words, writing is a process that requires following steps and using strategies to accomplish your goals.
