THEOLOGY

the emanation of the Holy Spirit.

Read Part One of Article B on sea otters.

If you have ever watched sea otters swim and play at your local zoo, you know they are extraordinary animals. But did you know they are under threat of extinction? That means no more sea otters in the wild and fewer in captivity. Sea otters have been on the Endangered Species List for over 45 years, but there are actions humans can take to protect them.

The Fur Trade

In the 1800s, sea otters were hunted for their fur. The fur trade between North America and Europe was booming, and sea otter fur was a popular option because of its thickness. By the mid-20th century, sea otters had been hunted to near extinction. Only 1,000−2,000 sea otters were believed to be living in the wild in 1929. Many people thought the species would soon become extinct. However, due to conservation efforts during the second half of the 20th century, sea otter populations recovered. The strengthening of the numbers of sea otters in the wild is often considered to be one of the greatest successes in marine conservation.

Despite their comeback, sea otters are sadly still an endangered species. This is due to predators and human impact on the sea otter's habitat.

Predators

Sea otters are threatened by other animals in the water and on land. Killer whales are one of the sea otter's main predators now that the seal and sea lion populations are declining. Sharks, sea lions, and eagles also pluck sea otters from the water while bears and coyotes will hunt them on land. Sea otters use their intelligence to outsmart some of their predators. They also use their sharp teeth to protect themselves.

What is the author's point of view on the reason the sea otter population recovered?

Laws were passed to shorten the number of months in sea otter hunting season.

Sea otters learned to eat a more varied diet, saving themselves from extinction.

Conservation efforts in the last half of the twentieth century saved sea otters.

More people started owning sea otters as pets, which increased their number.

Which sentence contains a double negative?

We didn't see nothing at the store.

I can't find my basketball anywhere.

Answers

Answer:

we didn't see nothing at the store

Explanation:

didn't and nothing cancel each other out

"We didn't see nothing at the store" sentence contains a double negative. Thus, option 'C' is the correct option.

What is a double negative?

When two grammatical negation structures are employed in the same sentence, the result is a double negative. The more general phrase for when there are many negatives in a sentence is "multiple negations." Double negatives can yield an affirmative in certain languages when they cancel one other out, but they can also amplify the negation in other languages.

The use of two negatives in a single independent phrase is referred to as litotes, and in standard English, the negatives are considered to cancel one another and result in a weaker affirmative (see the Robert Lowth quote below). However, depending on how the phrase is put together, certain dialects consider that the second negative is intensifying if a verb or adverb is placed between them.

What is The Outsiders?

Based on the first chapter of The Outsiders, it is predicted that some of the themes that may be developed in the book are the struggle between social classes, the importance of family and loyalty, and the sense of isolation and alienation felt by some of the characters. This prediction is based on the contrast between the rich Socs and the poor Greasers, as well as Ponyboy's sense of being an outsider and his connection with his gang members.

Chapter 2 reinforces these themes and introduces new ones, such as the idea of innocence and loss of it, and the importance of friendship. The conflict between the Socs and the Greasers becomes more apparent in this chapter, with a violent encounter between the two groups. Ponyboy's relationship with his brother Darry is also developed, highlighting the theme of family and loyalty.

By the end of Chapter 5, readers are waiting to find out how the conflict between the Socs and the Greasers will be resolved and what will happen to Johnny and Ponyboy after they run away. The events that keep readers from learning how the conflict will be resolved include the ongoing tension and violence between the two groups, as well as the uncertainty and danger faced by Johnny and Ponyboy while on the run.

When lunch was served, Carlos refused to put on any toppings, causing Stacey to gaze at his hot dog in dismay.

"I like predictability," Carlos explained patiently. "I know that I love plain hot dogs, and I don't want to ruin a perfectly good meal by drowning it in toppings that I might loathe."

"You miss out on amazing opportunities if you refuse to have new experiences," Stacey protested. "People say that variety is the spice of life because it makes everything more interesting." (2 points)

Read the story Hummingbird and Heron:

Many years ago, when the world was so young that the sun was still new in the sky, there lived two friends. Heron was large and slow, with a long, gangly neck and big, floppy wings. Hummingbird was tiny and swift, with wings that moved so quickly that they buzzed and a slender beak as sleek as a needle.

Heron and Hummingbird both loved to eat fish from the river. Every morning, Heron would fish to her heart's content, eating until her stomach was so round and heavy that she had to waddle back to shore. Every afternoon, Hummingbird would fish and feast until he was so heavy that his tiny, buzzing wings could no longer keep him in the air. Heron and Hummingbird thought they were the luckiest birds in the world.

One afternoon, Hummingbird did not catch as many fish as usual. He fished and he fished, but his line came up empty more times than it ever had before. He flew to Heron's house.

"Heron! Heron!" he called. "Why have you eaten all the fish?"

Heron bustled to her door, angry and surprised at her friend's accusation.

"Me? Eat all the fish?" she squawked. "I barely caught anything this morning! My poor stomach has been growling all day."

The two birds began to argue over who had eaten more fish. Finally, Hummingbird raised his wing to stop the debate.

"I do not think there are enough fish left in the river for both of us," he said. "Let's have a race. Whoever reaches the dead tree on the other side of the hills first owns all the fish. The loser has to find something else to eat."

Heron agreed. They prepared to race. Hummingbird was certain that he would win. He watched Heron as she awkwardly stretched her wings and prepared to fly. This will be like catching fish in a barrel, he thought with a grin.

Hummingbird zoomed past Heron as soon as the race began. He flew so far ahead that he lost sight of her behind him. He slowed down as he passed a patch of wildflowers. They smelled so sweet that he had to stop and look at them more closely. Hummingbird just had to try some of their nectar. He drank until his belly was heavy and his eyelids drooped. Perhaps just a short nap, he thought, as he settled himself into a nest of soft leaves.

It was late in the day when Hummingbird woke up. He stretched his wings and glanced at the sky. He could just make out the shape of Heron, flying slowly but surely toward the dead tree. She was almost done with the race! Hummingbird zipped into the air and flew as fast as he could, but it was too late. Heron reached the tree first. From that day forward, Heron owned the fish, and Hummingbird lived on nectar.

“If these shadows remain unaltered by the Future, none other of my race,” returned the Ghost, “will find him here. What then? If he be like to die, he had better do it, and decrease the surplus population.”

Scrooge hung his head to hear his own words quoted by the Spirit, and was overcome with penitence and grief.

“Man,” said the Ghost, “If man you be in heart, not adamant, forbear that wicked can’t until you have discovered What the surplus is, and Where it is. Will you decide what men shall live, what men shall die? It may be, that in the sight of Heaven, you are more worthless and less fit to live than millions like this poor man’s child. Oh God! to hear the Insect on the leaf pronouncing on the too much life among his hungry brothers in the dust!”
