Ziggurats were prominent architectural structures in ancient Mesopotamia, particularly in Sumer and Babylon, and they were used as religious temples dedicated to the gods of the respective city-states.

These ziggurats were characterized by their stepped, pyramid-like structures, with multiple levels or terraces leading up to a temple at the top. The ziggurat's design usually consisted of several levels, which were accessed by a series of ramps, stairs, or sometimes even external staircases. (100 points!!!) The 1970s saw a growth in the conservative movement in politics and society. How did this
movement affect the following topics?

Women's rights
Affirmative action
Religious reawakening

Answers

Answer:

The 1970s was an age of political movement that achieved a vast amount of the freedoms Americans enjoy today. In the early years of this time period, women had secured rights to co-education in higher institutions such as college, and expanded the workforce to embrace all genders, including married women with children. However, a rise of conservatives (traditionalists), sought to block more open-minded regulations and managed to do so, or spread information to gain supporters for their cause. Regarding the Women’s movement, supporters attempted to renew the fight for the Equal Rights Amendment. This law basically stated that all genders would be seen as equal under the Constitution and further solidified the feminist agenda. Conservative women who were concerned with the stability of families and believed in specific gender roles participated in the STOP ERA. Supporters of STOP argued that the Equal Rights Amendment would take away privileges currently enjoyed by women, including "dependent wife" benefits under Social Security, separate restrooms for males and females, and exemption from Selective Services. This group organized anti-ERA rallies which ultimately prohibited the amendment from being passed. Moving forward, affirmative action was a law passed in order to reserve slots for disadvantaged students. These included African Americans, women, and other ethnic minorities. Many conservative groups did not support this movement and students, employees, and university applicants sought legal action. In a specific event, Allan Bakke, a white man seeking admission into the University of California, sued the school claiming that they rejected his application because he was of a less favorable minority group. This case advanced to the Supreme Court in Bakke v. University of California, and sparked anti-affirmative-action marches on college campuses. While conservatives did not defeat affirmative action laws, they did gain supporters and caused the system to become an ongoing issue. Finally, during the 1970s a religious awakening occurred. Evangelicalism experienced a major revival and became heavily involved in politics. This group supported concepts of pro-life, strict gender roles, and family. Evangelists used the media to spread their views and broadened the educational resources for people to learn about religion and the traditional expectations women had to fulfill. Overall conservative groups fought greatly to block the passage of progressive legislation and gained supporters in their causes. Although at times these groups did not directly prohibit the new freedoms created, their opposition sparked controversy and revived them as issues that are still fought against today.

explain the significance of the holocaust

Answers

Answer:

The Holocaust is a deeply personal story about the effect that hatred and prejudice can have on a community. It is a story about millions of people who refused to use their voice to help others, and because of that refusal, millions of people lost their lives for no other reason than the belief that they were an inferior people.

The first major significance of the Holocaust was as an example of racist and prejudiced beliefs.  Racism has been a persistent problem throughout human history but the events of the Holocaust displayed the terrifying result of prejudice that was organized and carried out by a government.  In the Holocaust, much of the Nazis racist beliefs focused on Jewish people, although many other groups were also impacted, including: gypsies, homosexuals, Polish people and other religious and ethnic minorities.  Racism directed at Jewish people is referred to as anti-Semitism.  Anti-Semitism played a key role in the Holocaust and historians consider it one of the main causes.

The second major significance of the Holocaust was as an example of a genocide.  Simply put, a genocide is a mass killing of a certain group of people for ethnic or religious reasons.  There have been many genocides throughout history, but the brutality of the Holocaust highlighted the ability of human beings to treat each other in horrible ways.  For example, as part of the Nazi’s ‘Final Solution’ Jewish and other people deemed ‘undesirable’, were subjected to ghettos, concentration camps and death camps.  In each of these situations the victims faced terrible conditions, including: overcrowding, lack of water, lack of food, brutal treatment by the Nazi guards and unsanitary conditions which led to the spread of infectious diseases.  As a result, it is estimated that over 11 million people were killed in the Holocaust including 6 million Jewish people.

The final significance of the Holocaust was the renewed focus on human rights after 1945, when both World War II and the Holocaust ended.  For example, the United Nations was formed in 1945 with the goal of promoting co-operation between nations and with reaffirming the importance of human rights.  Specifically, the countries of the world wanted to avoid another conflict like World War II and to prevent the horrible atrocities of the Holocaust from ever occurring again.  To further this goal, the United Nations established the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948.  Member countries adopted the document in an attempt to create a central list of fundamental human rights that all countries could agree to. Therefore, the events of the Holocaust led to the creation of the United Nations and furthered the importance in human rights.  The United Nations remains an important organization to this day and currently includes 193 member states.

The Holocaust was an incredibly significant and memorable event.  It is remembered today for the inhumane actions carried out by the Nazi Party and Adolf Hitler that led to one of the most important genocides in human history.  However, it also led to the creation of the United Nations as countries tried to prevent a similar genocide from occurring in the future.
